Bernadette and Todd Withers sat listenting at the foot of the stairs. They were eavesdropping on their foster parents' conversation.

It was about them.

"I don't know, Suzy. I don't think that their very thrilled to be here. With us,"

"Jake, would you be happy if your parents didn't want you? Maybe they just don't really trust adults yet." That voice was definitely a womans.

Todd turned his face away from the closed door. He looked at his younger sister with a frown.

She nodded and they both stood up and walked quietly upstairs.

The siblings' family parents were people who expected everything to be like them. Perfect.

But, after the decisions they made as parents, they could never think about being called perfect.

The two adults had married young. Their first child was very unexpected, and not to mention very unwelcomed.

After the first couple of weeks with Todd in the mothers womb, he was unnoticed. So the parents drank and partied for a bit. When Todd was born, he had breathing difficulties.

Infuriated with the not-so-healthy baby, the young couple wanted to give him away. The doctors were schocked. They persuaded the parents to keep Todd for at least 5 years, then decide what to do.

When Todd was only 3 years old, Mrs. Withers was pregnant again.

But this time with a girl.

The parents kept their plan in mind: get rid of the little brats when the boy turned 5.

And that's what happened.

Todd and Bernadette had been in the orphanage, even though they still had living parents.

But who would want those people as parents?

Bernadette and Todd sat on their beds in the shared room.

Nothing needed to be said. They weren't going to stay.

"This is how it's been for the past 2 years, Todd! I don't understand!" sobbed Bernadette. Todd sat on his sister's bed next to her. He gave her a sidehug with both of his arms. Bernadette continued to cry.

"I don't understand why they don't want us! We aren't like cars, ready to buy!" Bernadette leaned into her brother for support.

"I know, Bernie. We can never seem to find the right people for us. But, you know what?" Todd asked her. She shook her head no.

"I have faith, Bernie. I have faith that someday someone will find us. Then they'll raise us the way we should be raised. They'll kiss our booboo's to make them better. They'll give us a blanket when we're cold. Or when we're sad, the people who love us will try their best to cheer us up." Todd's voice was oddly calm.

For Todd being only 7 years old, and Bernie being 4, they were so mature. Much maturer than many kids are.

"You think so, Todd?" Bernie asked. There was hope in her voice.

"Of course I do! Now, let's get into our beds and try to get some sleep, okay?"

Todd tucked in his little sister, and turned off the big light.

"Good night, Bernie," said Todd as he climbed into his bed.

"Nighty night Todd."

ruff!
By the next few days, the two kids' belongings were packed. They turned and waved goodbye to the most recent set of parents.

By the next few weeks, the two kids were given another oppurtunity to have a family.

They took the offer.

And then they were headed off to Nevada.
