AGE 13
I hated that we had to move here. I hated that I had to leave my friends. I hated how I had to start over. But I loved how they thought I couldn't hear them.
"I swear to God I'm gonna marry her," the older boy said as he sat in the grass next door.
"Dude," the younger one laughed, " you haven't even met her. You don't even know her name. She moved in, what, like two hours ago?"
At this I scoffed and focused on the stack of boxes that I was supposed to be carrying up to my new room.
"Oh look, we've got visitors," my mom said a half an hour later.
I set down my box and looked up at the woman with frizzy brown hair running across our lawn, waving frantically. Behind her were the two boys from earlier, slowly slumming along.
"Hello," the strange woman said, "I'm Helen Farro from next door. These are my two boys, Josh," she pointed to the older one, "and Zach."
Josh handed my mother a small cake and Zach said, "Welcome to the neighborhood."
"Oh thank you. I'm Katie Williams. This is my husband, Dave, and our lovely daughter, Hayley."
"How old are you boys?" Dad asked.
"Josh is 14 and Zach is 12," their mother replied.
"Oh Hayley'll fit right in," Mother told them," she's 13."
"So what brings you to Franklin?" Helen asked.
Small talk... I went back to my boxes.
"Joshua, why don't you help the poor girl instead of burning a hole in her back?" Mrs. Farro suggested a few minutes later. "You too, Zachary."
The boys joined me on my side of the moving truck and stood there, awaiting orders.
"Take a box and follow me," I instructed them.
"Jeeze, what do you have in here? Bricks?" Zach asked on the third trip up.
"No," I told him, "those are my CDs."
Suddenly, Josh perked up. I opened the box and immediately Zach started digging through it.
"I've never heard of any of this," he said. "What about you, Josh?"
"Nope," he replied.
"Well... it's more soul, I guess. R&B," I told them.
"And N'Sync?" Zach asked.
"Maybe..."
"You know," Josh said, "you should come over and listen to the stuff we have. I think you'd like it."
"HE SPEAKS!" Zach declared.
I grinned. "Yeah? Sounds fun. How about tomorrow?"
"Sure. Around 4ish?"
"Awesome..." I said shyly.
There was an awkward silence as Zach kept digging through my CDs and Josh shifted uncomfortably. Soon, Mrs. Farro was ready to leave.
"BOYS!" she called. "TIME TO GO!"
"Well... I'll see you guys tomorrow, I guess. 4, right?"
"Right."
"Thanks for the help," I said.
"Bye," Zach replied.
They walked out silently but after I slowed the door and they thought I couldn't hear them, Zach started laughing.
"Smooth move, Josh," he chuckled. "I think she likes you."
"Shut up, man. I just met her."
"You loved her before you knew her name..."
The next day, Josh rushed me through some music and then told me to get out.
"I'm sorry, Hayley. We have band practice and we can't be disturbed. Now take these CDs, listen to them, cherish them, and GET OUT!"
"I... uh... okay. Bye, Zach," I said, confused.
Once outside, I heard crashing cymbals and Zach yelling.
"IT'S NOT MY FAULT YOU KICKED HER OUT!"
"SHUT UP! I CHOKED!" Josh yelled back.
I laughed in satisfaction and went inside my own house.
He's not listening
