After dancing for a few songs together Pete started to feel more comfortable around Kelly and not some blubbering idiot. The night was wearing on and the dance was starting to get boring with the same bad music blasting over the speakers and the same quiet couples making out in the dark.
As Kelly looked around the room admiring the cheesy decorations while Pete got the both of them another cup of punch.
Pete leaned into Kelly and said, "How about we go somewhere a little more quiet?" over the pounding music.
Kelly nodded and who was starting to feel the first few stages of a pounding headache coming on. "That sounds like a wonderful idea," she yelled back.
So Pete quietly ushered Kelly out of the room and into the beautiful star filled night.
Kelly muttered a soft, "Wow," while admiring the sky.
Pete smiled a little and had a feeling that he was doing something right for once. They silently walked across the dewy field to a little outlook across they way where there was a park bench.
The outlook showed a view of the city that they had been staying in for the past four weeks. It was more run down than cosmopolitan but with the place lit up, the cars moving around with their headlights, and a little glimpse of an ocean in the background it was almost beautiful.
Kelly sat down on the bench and was taking in all in, she had this smile of wonderment on her face.
"Why are you smiling Kelly?"
"Just amazed that something so ugly during the day can turn into something more at night," Kelly said looking into Pete's eyes.
"Yeah, pretty odd," Pete said scooting a little closer to Kelly.
Kelly gazed back out of the view and stated, "I'm staring to get pretty cold. You think we should head back inside?"
Pete not wanting to kill this perfect moment said, "No, here I'll keep you warm," and wrapped his arm around Kelly's shoulders.
Kelly laid her head on Pete's shoulder, closed her eyes and smiled, "Hmm, you are pretty warm. I kind like this jacket."
Pete gave a nervous mixture between a laugh and a cough. After recovering Pete said, "Kelly?"
Kelly now lifted her head off of Pete's shoulder and looked up over at him, "Hmm?"
"I think I have a confession to make."
"Well go ahead and say it. No one is stopping you."
"Well, ever since the first day I met you...I really liked you and I know it's stupid for me to say anything at all since it's technically the last day...but I thought I would just put that out there," Pete finished in a huff while looking at the ground.
"Is that all you wanted to tell me Pete? Because I've known that for a long time."
Pete looked up, "Really? And why did you just call me Pete?"
"Because I'm through with giving you a hard time and I've been dying to do this," Kelly said while planting her lips on Pete's and in about a nanosecond Pete responded.
It was more than anything Pete could ever dream of or hope for. He was just afraid of Kelly pulling away and taking his new form of oxygen away. Pete's hands started to entwine themselves around Kelly's neck. While Kelly was trying to move closer to Pete too. So that the two of them almost became one. After what seemed a lifetime Kelly finally pulled away for air.
The both of them were taking deep breaths and Pete was ready to capture Kelly's mouth again with his own but Kelly said, "Wait!"
Pete pulled away nervously, curious at what he did wrong.
"Before we go any further Pete. I just need to have a phone number or e-mail or screen name or something so I don't forget about it tomorrow in the rush to leave. So I can, you know, contact you after we leave California."
Pete relaxed and smiled glad that was the only thing Kelly needed. "Of course Kelly," Pete said pulling out his wallet were he was sure there was some scrap piece of paper inside.
"Got a pen?" he asked as he was still ruffling through his wallet.
"Oh yeah," Kelly said pulling a small pen from her pocket and handing it to Pete.
A little wind started to pick up and was carrying off some receipts and dollar bills from a pile that Pete had made on the outlook bench. Since Pete was busily writing down his phone number, address, e-mail, and aim Kelly was the one who went to capture the run away items.
They were simple unimportant things; a receipt from a music store, a therapists card, a few one dollar bills, and such. But there was one thing that had struck Kelly as very odd. It was a picture, some school picture with a blue background and in the center a smiling girl.
Though it could have been just any other girl. This girl had something oddly familiar about her. She had the same auburn colored hair, the same full pink lips, it seemed as though she had the same bone structure as Kelly.
Kelly turned it over in hopes of that her eyes were playing tricks on her. But on the back there was writing. In very curly and loopy handwriting it said, gonna miss you this summer Petey but i love you. And all the i's had a little heart drawn over the i where the dot should have been. In the right bottom of the corner of the picture it had the date the picture was taken, and it was taken right before summer vacation had started.
Kelly stared at the picture for another five minutes trying to process what she was seeing. This girl was obviously way more than a friend Kelly decided. The scariest part was that this nameless girl looked so sickeningly alike to Kelly. If she didn't ask Pete about this it would probably haunt her forever.
Kelly turned around and walked up to Pete the picture was firmly clutched in her hand. Pete looked up and smiled as Kelly approached but the smile quickly faded as he saw the look on Kelly's face.
"What's-" Pete started.
"Don't say anything Pete. Until you tell me who this is?" Kelly said shoving the picture under his face.
Pete pulled it away to get a better look, "Why it's my ex-girlfriend."
Kelly had crossed her arms and was tapping her foot impatiently, "Pretty odd likeness don't you think? Me and her. We almost look exactly the same."
"Yeah, but that doesn't matter, mere coincidence-"
Kelly cut off Pete again, "You know what I think? You just wanted to get near me so you could replace your lousy girlfriend. That's the only reason you liked me Pete, and now I am disgusted to have known you."
"But that's not true!"
"I don't want to hear what lies you thought up this time. You used me Pete! Used me!" Kelly was yelling now, "To replace what you couldn't have. Right now I resent you for it. I hate you for that. Right now, I don't want to see your face ever again so just leave me alone!"
And that was when Kelly started to run back to her dorm room, tears falling down her face and landing in big droplets on the grassy ground.
Pete tried to call after her but it was no use. So he sat down and tried not to yell out at the world. He saw the picture and ripped it up in a million tiny pieces and throwing the pieces all over the ground. Regretting that he didn't do that the second that Melanie broke up with him. He hated himself for losing the most perfect girl he had ever known that was right in his grasp but he just didn't hold onto hard enough.
Kelly had made it into her dorm room. She was thankful she didn't run into Joe, Andy, or Patrick because she would of had to explain herself and the reason for her tears. She saw the red rose on the dresser and ripped it up leaving it to die on the floor.
She then curled into her bottom bunk bed and cried and cried and cried. Felling used, lied to, and heart broken. Why did she fall for the one guy that hurt her beyond words? She was asking herself.
Hours later and no one came. Not even the boys to see if she was all right. Kelly figured that Pete didn't tell them what had happened. Kelly had calmed herself down and felt grateful that no one came or then she would had to talk about why she was a broken mess and she didn't think she could talk properly.
Kelly pulled out the cell phone her parents said to use for emergencies. This was most definitely an emergency Kelly thought. There was four rings before the phone was picked up.
"Hey mom...yeah everything's good and all, but I was wondering if you could pick me up?...Because I really missed you and I wanted to talk to you and plus some of the kids here I can't hardly stand coming back home with...yeah, I made some friends....I don't know if I'll stay in touch you know, how those things go...okay, tomorrow at ten? I'll be ready...Love you, Mommy."
Kelly hung up the phone and packed the little she had left out of the suitcase. After about fifteen minutes she went to bed silently crying herself into an uneasy sleep.
