I had spent the rest of the day passing notes back and forth to Jasper between class and solidifying the perspectives of our 'relationship'...
Such as why in the hell I had to be 'dating' him...
Actually, the answer to that one had been a very good idea at the time. We needed to be able to be together without question, and the charade of a date would be a very good idea...
But now that I was on my own, the planning done and with my father suspiciously glancing at the clock from his book every few minutes, The plan seemed to be floundering.
The night before, Jasper had called just after My father and I had sat down to dinner.
My father had been the one who had answered the phone and talked to Jasper on his own. I had only caught my father's side of the conversation.
"Who is asking for her?"
"Excuse me?"
"No.. I didn't know."
There was a pause here where my father watched me and I froze, wide-eyed.
"That is a wonderful idea, I would like that very much." The words came out as cheerful, and my father gave me a pointed look, raising a brow before he said his finale.
"Yes.. Yes, seven would be perfect. See you then, Jasper."
It was at that point that I realised what had been happening for the past eight or nine minutes. My eyes widened as my father calmly came to sit at the small table with me again.
Dinner had been silent, but I was far too nervous to say anything even if conversation had been offered. When I tried to stand and excuse myself, he finally spoke.
"You could have told me you had a boyfriend, you know... It's a good thing." The words startled me slightly and I had to struggle to grasp something to say.
"I didn't think about it. It only really happened this afternoon..." I murmured finally. Dad's eyes popped as he inspected me. I could feel the blush creeping up my cheeks as his eyes searched my face. Suddenly, he smiled, nodding in assent.
"It's okay, besides He'll be coming over to take you out to the movies tomorrow, won't he?" Again, my father's words left me flabbergasted for a moment. Soon enough, though, I recovered and managed to laugh nervously.
"So that's why you looked so stunned..." I muttered, nodding by way of answering his question. "I was going to introduce the two of you tomorrow..." I muttered, blushing once more.
My Father had simply nodded and allowed me to excuse myself to my room.
But now that I sat fidgeting in the small window seat of our living room, My father peering at the clock periodically between reading... The entire situation began to take weight. I'd had no opportunity to speak with Jasper at school that day and the lack of the option had left me sadly lacking in reliance on the plan.
Suddenly, there was a crisp knock on the door and, without hesitation, I leaped from my seat, dashing to the door. I knew my father would be in question of my actions, in fact, I could feel his scowl bearing down on me as I turned the corner, launching at the door and wrenching it open, but at that moment, my one concern was how fast I could have my hands around Jasper's throat, slowly crushing his air intake...
Standing on my doorstep, a mild smile on his face, Jasper held out a single Red Rose out to me. With a hidden scowl, and a scathing look, I accepted the rose and was once more surprised as he stepped over the threshold of my doorway and wrapped an arm securely around my waist. Shutting the door quickly, I turned to see my father standing imposingly in the hall, raising a brow at the boy beside me. I watched as his scathing gaze traced over Jasper's long arm encircling my waist before coming up to inspect his face.
With an unknown astonishment, I watched my father's eyes widen a fraction. He let pause only for an instant on Jasper's darkened topaz eyes before extending his hand solemnly forward.
"Jasper, I presume?" He said simply. Jasper let lose an even grin, nodding and extending his own pale hand to give my father's a firm shake.
"That would be me. I hope I'm not intruding on any of your plans with Kat... I just couldn't wait to take her out..."
He played innocent so well. With a hidden scowl, I watched Jasper play off the night's lie as simply as second nature. His face let off no inflection contrary to the fact we would be going to see a movie. I was livid with him, sure, but the awe could not be suppressed. He was a damned fine liar. For twenty-four hours, I had been panicking every time Jasper had come into question, thinking the lie was about to crumble; and here he was, Cool and collected as ever he was.
Cool- in more ways than one. With a slight shiver, I finally registered the icy feel of his arm around me.
Chasing the Chances of Change....
We left my home not terribly long after Jasper had arrived.
My Father stood out on the door step, waving goodbye to us with a small smile on his warm face. I turned and waved absently to him as Jasper gently lead me to his car. Once again, I seated myself in the cold seat of the unheated car, watching as Jasper rounded to his door, climbing inside and starting the engine with a warm hum.
After a few moments of utter silence in the car, only punctuated by the strums of Violin strings and the sweet tang of the piano coming from Jasper's radio, I finally had to speak. "So what exactly will we be doing tonight?"
Jasper peered over at me, raising a brow with a slight smirk before answering. "Why, didn't you hear what we said to your father? We'll be going to see a movie, and I'm to have you back home by eleven." Jasper's voice was smug as confusion crossed through me.
"What in the devil are you on about, Whitlock?" I snapped, earning a hearty laugh from the boy beside me.
"I'd prefer it if you called me Jasper. We ARE dating, you know." He began, but catching my glare continued quickly, "I would prefer to actually have what we said to your father be the truth... Gain some trust before we have to go behind his back. I have a feeling he's not going to like me too much as it is." This last, he mumbled to himself, but in the compact car, I heard clearly and frowned.
"My Father was surprisingly kind, actually. I was expecting glares and nitpicking for hours before we could leave, but he seemed to take one look at you and back down... I Wonder why that is..." I trailed off, peering over at Jasper. He shifted, as though uncomfortable with the direction of the conversation.
"Yeah, but I have a feeling that he's going to think I made you cut your hair when you have to..." He muttered simply, Ending that trail of the conversation.
We did end up seeing a movie. 'We' also went for ice cream after, though I was the only one who had anything- Jasper claimed to have eaten before. In the end, it was a mildly enjoyable night, and allowed me to forget for a few moments what my life was turning in to.
By the time Jasper walked me to the front door of my home, It was drawing on ten-thirty.
Turning to Jasper, I smiled up at him. He stared down at me from a full head over me before cracking his own smile. I said my thanks, though I'm not quite sure if he heard me, when my voice choked as I watched him in the dark light from the stars.
He grinned and bend down to me, despite that, and I drew in a startled breath, thinking he was planning to kiss me. His pale face brushed by mine, placing cold lips to my cheek for a moment and whispering, "Tomorrow night we start your training..." Before pulling away and turning from me with a small smile, leaving me rooted to my spot as i watched him climb into his car and speed off.
