Chapter Two
“I don’t understand! You sedated her two hours ago and she’s up and walking! She hasn’t moved for eight years!” Doctor Maverrick paced the conference room in anger. The confinement room was projected onto the blank wall where they watched the heavily drugged woman. “If Vodriche wasn’t there wanking off to her, who knows what could have happened? What would she do if she escaped? WHAT?” Vodriche didn’t bother sticking up for himself. Everyone knew he watched her. He didn’t do that, but he was always there after his shift. No one really cared any way, they were to busy cowering in fear. An alarm beeped and all eyes turned to the black and white security image as the woman stirred, about to rise, when Doctor Maverrick jammed his finger on a button and she fell back, limp against the bed, sliding over the edge and landing against the floor, hospital gown hitched up her thigh.
Vodriches instinct was to block the screen so the others couldn’t see her. It was insane, all of them had probably seen her naked.
“Can someone please tell me how she managed to wake up so quickly? What do the tests say?”
“She was hungry.”
“Excuse me?” The Doctor glared at the balding man next to him. The man visibly gulped.
“All the reports indicate that she was hungry.”
“She hasn’t eaten in eight years and suddenly she’s hungry?” The man nodded jerkily, pushing his folder towards his boss.
“She was somehow able to kick start her body into awareness. I’m guessing that when she woke previously, it was only a weak attempt, instinct, you might say, to feed, but this,” He gestured almost wordlessly at the crumpled figure on the wall. “This is desperation. You have to remember sir, she is a predator. When she has to feed, she feeds. I’m guessing her body must be at the edge of its limit, just look at the way she is fighting the drugs we’re giving her. And each time her recovery is quicker.” The alarm was beeping again, but she wasn’t moving. The Doctor pressed the button any way. “Before long we won’t be able to contain her. We need to do it now Sir, before we have to terminate the project.”
“Have we found a new subject?”
“Yes Sir,” Another, younger Doctor informed him. Vodriche shot a curious glance at the man sitting next to him. “We have selected the target, and will bring her in when the current subject is too weak to fight,”
“I protest, I say we do what we intended to do!” The balding man spat. “If we terminate the project now, we loose all our work!”
“No! We can use all the information from the current subject and use it on the new subject.” The argument continued, hazing Vodriches mind. He had no idea what they meant. He was glad when his father ended the meeting. Grasping his sons arm, the Doctor dragged him into the restricted sector.
“Tell me, what did she do?” They gazed at her crumpled form, a hand curled against her face as if sleeping naturally. He could see her long legs exposed, so pale, more so by the electric lights that illuminated every possible shadow in the small room.
“She stood up Sir, and walked towards me.”
“What did she say?”
“Nothing, she just looked really blank.” His father grunted before moving back slightly as she shifted. A red light blinked furiously nearby. She rose blearily, as if weighed down, hair falling over her face before she froze. Her head tilted as her gaze swiveled towards them. His face drained of colour as her eyes settled on him. He couldn’t hear or see his father. He wasn’t even sure if the man was still there. She was moving forward, towards him. She was so graceful, so beautiful, but he didn’t desire her anymore. Her beauty was a terrible thing, so powerful and regal. She placed a hand on the glass, spreading her fingers, eyes still locked with his. She looked ready to speak, drawing him closer in his apprehensive desire to hear her, but that desire brought the real world into his head, drowning out her spell. His father was yelling, the button he was pressing clicking uselessly. A phone lay unattended on the floor, desperate electronic voices shrieking out at them. Get out of there. Run. Do something. God she’s beautiful. All the instructions useless as his world went silent again.
Wordlessly he placed his hand against the glass, spreading his fingers to match hers. Her green eyes were luring him closer, her mouth opening to speak. His breath caught in his throat, eyes widening, and then the world wrenched him into reality. He was being dragged away, torn from her, eyes still connected as they watched each other disappear from sight.
Shattering glass was the last thing he remembered.
