"Youre Fat."
..Tell me something I dont know..
"Man, your forehead is wide! Doesnt that annoy you?"
..Try every time I look in a mirror..
"Hehe, Karei youre such a midget!"
..Its not my fault, is it?..
You sat by yourself, watching from afar as the other kids talked happily, making new friends. It was your first day at the Ninja Academy; you had come from Kirigakure, the village hidden in the mist, from the Land of Water. Your parents had moved to Konoha because of a mission that would last for at least ten years, and you had gone with them even though they would hardly ever be home. Until this day you had loved living in Konoha because it was always sunny unlike Kirigakure which was nearly always raining or snowing, because of this you were extremely pale seeing as you had hardly seen the sun and burned easily. Your abnormally pale skin drew stares from the moment you had entered the gates, the kids teased you about your appearance and it stung like a Kunai being dug into your flesh.
I cant help how I look, can I?
You hung your head, allowing your wispy strands of white hair to fall across your face and wiped a few angry tears from your pale cheeks,
"Are you okay?"
You looked up to meet eyes with an odd looking boy, he had the biggest, bushiest eyebrows you had ever seen and his long dark hair hung in a neat plait down his back.
"I-Im fine thank you..?"
"I am Rock Lee!"
"Im fine thank you Rock Lee."
"What is your name?"
"H-Hitoshirezu Karei."
He looked at you; his smile was dazzling and sparkled in the sunlight.
"Do you want to be my friend, Karei-san?"
Your eyes widened, Lee wasnt exactly the most attractive of the students around here, but who were you to be picky. I mean, it was like you always said, true beauty lies beneath the skin. You nodded as more tears streamed over your cheeks,
"What is wrong now?"
You trembled and buried your head in your lap,
"I-Ive never had a friend before!"
Sobs raked your body, you felt arms wrap around you and you looked up in shock, Lee was hugging you.
"Do you know what your name means?"
You shook your head,
"It means Hidden Beauty, I bet that when you are older you will be one of the most beautiful shinobis in Konoha, if not the world!"
You smiled at your new friend,
"Thank you Lee-chan, you are my best friend."
He turned to you, your faces inches apart,
"Promise?"
He held out a delicate little pinky, you nodded and linked your podgy one with his.
"I promise, forever and ever."

"I *punch* will *punch* be the *punch* best *punch* and most *punch* beautiful *punch* shinobi *punch* the world *punch* will ever *punch* SEE!"
You collapsed onto the ground, sweat dripping off your body. Your knuckles were bruised badly and the skin had started to come off from so much training.
"Karei-chan! Are you okay?"
Lee ran over to you, you raised your head; he was lying in front of you.
"Just tired Lee-chan."
You smiled as he blew a strand of hair out of his face.
"With all this training you are doing, you will be the strongest shinobi, EVER!"
You giggled and rolled around on the grass, facing him.
"Nuh uh, YOU will be the strongest shinobi ever! I will be the second strongest!"
"Let us both be the worlds strongest shinobi!"
He extended his pinkie and you linked yours with his and shook on it,
"Its a promise!"
You stood up, grinning and went back to training. Throwing punch after punch, kick after kick at the training log. You turned and saw Lee, his brow furrowed in concentration, his punches and kicks were a force to be reckoned with. He was the most skilled with Taijutsu out of your age group. Lee was your inspiration,
I want to be just like Lee, I want to be strong and thin! I want to show them all.
Your sensei, Iruka, called your group in,
"You all trained extremely well, now were going to have a race!"
Lee jumped up and down excitedly,
"A race Karei-chan! I will beat them all!"
You smiled and giggled, a feeling of dread in your stomach, you weren't the best at running and the kids never hesitated to remind you.
"Two laps around Konoha, we shall start in two minutes."
Iruka Sensei walked away leaving you and the crowd of students. Your gaze was attracted to a boy with pale eyes and long brown hair, wearing a sour expression on his face. He was surrounded by a gaggle of adoring girls all squealing. A loud conversation nearby captured your attention.
"I wonder if Tubby is going to run, wouldnt it be a health hazard to the residents in Konoha! I mean dont you remember what happened last time we had an earthquake?!"
You turned around, your face turning a bright red, tears stung in your eyes.
"Do not say that about Karei-chan! She is a more skilled shinobi than you will ever be!"
Lee stormed over to the group shaking his fist,
"Oh look, Tubbys boyfriend Bushy-brows is going to defend her! What are you going to do to me Bushy-brow? Tap me with your fist! We all know you suck at Genjutsu and Ninjutsu!"
Another chimed in,
"Suck at it? He cant even do it! Theyre both failures! They should get married and have fat, bushy-browed, failure children!"
The group burst into cruel laughter, you placed your hands over your ears, tears streaming down your cheeks,
"Stop it! Just stop it! You are all horrible! I hate you all!"
You ran off towards the forest, bawling your eyes out.
"LOOK OUT EVERYBODY! EARTHQUAKE!"
All the kids started yelling and squealing in laughter, pretending to shake and fall to the ground. With one more sob you ran into the forest, you kept on running. The branches slapping cruelly at your bare face, neck, arms and legs, leaving deep scratches, most of which had started to bleed. It stung unbearably, but what the children had said back there was even more unbearable. Finally you were out of breath and out of energy; you sank, defeated, under a massive oak tree. You sat there on the mossy ground crying your heart out into your palms.
"Please do not cry Karei-chan, you are making me sad."
You looked up shocked, stopping from crying for a split second. You hadnt even heard Lee approach; he really was a skilled shinobi. He walked over to you and sat down next to you, putting his arm around you.
"Dont touch me Lee-chan, Im repulsive and fat!"
"DO NOT SAY THAT KAREI-CHAN!"
You finally stopped crying, that was the first time you had heard Lee actually shout at someone,
"Does it really matter what the others think? Does it really matter what you look like? Is it not what is on the inside that really counts? Or is everything you have told me in the past a lie? When you die, your body is left behind on earth to decay and rot, it is the soul, your beautiful soul that goes up to heaven in the end to live with whoever is up there. So does it really matter what you look like down here, when in the end you will be an angel up in heaven for Gods eyes to praise, and what higher praise is there?"
The whole time you looked straight into Lees eyes, a fire burnt deep within them. You were both one. Your image reflected in his glassy eyes. Both weathered flowers joined into one beautiful blossom.
"To me, Karei-chan, you are more beautiful than any one out there! Because you have a beautiful personality unlike those children who scorn you because of your appearance. You know what really counts and you take me for who I am! You are my best friend Karei-chan, and I love you for everything you are!"
One last tear rolled down your cheek, Lee wiped it away.
"T-thank you Lee-chan."
He stood and helped you up,
"I will not let their words and insults hurt me anymore."
Lee nodded and gave you a hug,
"Also, Karei-chan,"
"Yes?"
"There is something you have that they do not have."
You looked at him puzzled,
"You give the best hugs, because there is more to hug!"
Your heart melted, from that moment on, you knew you loved him even if he didnt feel the same way..

You looked at the teenager in front of you; her pale skin glowed luminously in the bright sunlight. Her long, thin hair cascaded in a silver waterfall down her back, rippling every time she moved. Her long slender fingers played with her locks, pinning it back into a sleek pony-tail. Finally her turquoise eyes sparkled appraisingly under long, fluttering lashes. You stepped away from the mirror,
"Mirror, mirror on the wall you dont define me, not at all!"
You laughed gleefully at your poem; nothing could dampen your spirits, for today was the day of the Chunin exams! You were setting off with your fellow team mates, Asai Antai one of the most popular and prettiest shinobi in your age group and the only male in your group, Kyouaku Tora who was famous for his ferocious combination of Taijutsu and Ninjutsu. You were on top of the world, not even Antais snide comments could hurt you today. You whistled cheerfully as you walked with your team and Sensei,
"Youre in an awfully good mood today, Karei."
You beamed at Ichigo and placed your hands behind your head, taking in the clear blue of the sky.
"Any reason why youre so chipper?"
"Its the chunin exams! Plus I get to hang out with Lee-chan all day!"
Ichigo smiled knowingly and gave you an "I see" look, raising his eyebrows.
"What? Whats that look for?"
"Oh, Nothing."
You frowned a little and continued to walk in silence,
"KAREI-CHAN! How are you this youthful morning?"
You grinned from ear to ear as you saw Rock Lee running towards you,
"Im great thanks Lee-chan, how are you?"
"Just splendid thank you! Today we become Chunins!"
You rounded the corner and spotted a mass of hopeful genins making their way into the building where you would be tested.
"TenTen! Hello!"
You ran forwards to meet your friend, she smiled warmly and waved hello. She was standing with a boy your age who had grey eyes and long brown hair.
"Neji."
Neji inclined his head and returned to looking out into the crowd. You scowled at him and then turned back to TenTen,
"You excited for today?"
"More nervous than excited!"
You patted her on the back reassuringly,
"Dont worry TenTen, youll do fine! Probably better than me!"
She scoffed,
"What?! You will!"
"No offense Karei, but you have extremely low self esteem."
You shrugged,
"Im feeling confident today!"
You two made your way in the building, you had lost track of Lee,
I wonder where he has gotten to?
TenTen nudged you in the ribs and whispered in your ear,
"So how are things between you and Lee."
You turned crimson and mumbled a hurried,
"Fine, just normal. Nothing special."
She gave you the same look Ichigo had given you a few minutes ago. As the crowd dispersed you caught sight of Lee. You received a push from TenTen,
"Nows a great time to tell him how you feel!"
"Shut up! Hes right over there!"
TenTen giggled evilly, your heart dropped as you saw Lee blushing furiously and looking over determinedly at a girl with sakura pink hair and brilliant green eyes.
Shes prettier than Ill ever be..
Your shoulders drooped as you saw Lee walk over to the girl, the eyes of her team mates were on him. He approached her and gave her a thumbs up, smiling that smile that he usually reserved for you.
"Be my girlfriend! I will protect you with my life!"
Your heart plummeted into your stomach,
Just as I thought, way prettier than Ill ever be. She deserves Lee more than I do.
Unwanted tears welled in your eyes and you ran around the corner,
"Hey! Karei! Wait up!"
You lost TenTen and ended up under a Sakura tree next to a pond, hot tears streaming down your cheeks,
And here I thought today was going to be an amazing day.
You thought bitterly as you gazed at your reflection in the pond. A tear landed in the water with a soft plip and sent ripples distorting your reflection. More tears followed.
"Why cant I just be beautiful? I hate myself!"

TenTen stormed over to Lee, who was standing dejected against the wall.
"ROCK LEE YOU BAKA!"
Lee looked up startled,
"TenTen! What is the problem?"
She grabbed a fist full of jumpsuit and pulled him towards her, shaking her fist menacingly.
"YOU are my problem Lee! Are you blind, stupid or both? You are so clueless! You have known Karei for what, 7, 8 years and yet you dont know her at all!"
"What do you mean?"
TenTens face started to get redder,
"YOU IDIOT! SHE IS IN LOVE WITH YOU! SHE HAS BEEN FOREVER! AND YOU GO OVER AND ASK OUT A GIRL YOU HAVENT EVEN TALKED TO BEFORE JUST BECAUSE SHE LOOKS NICE! YOU KNOW HOW SELF-CONSCIOUS KAREI IS AND YET YOU DO SOMETHING AS SELFISH AS THIS! AND YOU CALL YOURSELF HER BEST FRIEND!"
TenTen let go and stormed over to Neji, she was fuming. Lee stood stunned.
"S-she loves ME?!"
Lee looked out the door,
"Karei, loves ME?"

The voices echoed through your head.
"I hate myself; I hate myself, I HATE MYSELF! I WISH I WOULD JUST DO EVERY ONE A FAVOUR AND DIE!"
"Karei-chan.."
You looked up startled, Lee was standing next to the Sakura tree, your cheeks were tear streaked. You returned your gaze to the pond.
"What do you want?"
Lee knelt down next to you; his hand lightly brushed yours, bandages upon skin. It sent tingles up your spine.
"I want to say I am sorry, that was an insensitive thing to do."
You nodded, more tears hitting the pond.
"Is that it? Youre forgiven; you can go now and leave me alone."
"Karei-chan! But that is not all I wanted to say-"
You stood up, your fists clenched,
"I dont care! Leave me alone!"
Lee stood up, towering above you,
When did he get so tall?
Then he did something unexpected, he cupped your face in his hands and lifted your face to his. It was barely a kiss, just the smallest brushing of skin but it sent the biggest sensations and blossoming of emotions shaking through your body. You never wanted it to end, but then he eventually pulled away. His face bright red,
"L-lee.."
"I am sorry Karei-chan. But what I wanted to say was that I love you, but I couldnt get a word in. I had to silence you some how."
You stood dumbfounded, a light breeze playing with your hair.
"Karei-chan, you are more beautiful than all those Sakura blossoms on that tree put together. You are beautiful in many ways, in appearance and in personality. Now promise me you will never think of yourself as ugly again, because you are far from ugly!"
He shakingly extended a bandaged pinkie, just like you used to when you were little and making a promise.
"Promise me?"
You took his thin pinkie in your slender one,
"I promise Lee-chan."
Then you stood on your toes and kissed him lightly, then when you pulled away you giggled,
"Sealed with a kiss."
Lee pulled you into a hug,
"Oh and Karei-chan,"
"Hmm?"
"You still give the best hugs in the world."
