flashback
A big pair of blue eyes watch me inquisitively. I glance up at the boy gazing at me, before returning to my sandwich.
"Whatcha eating?" he asks boldly.
"Nutella!" I cry, with a big smile. I love nutella, but my mummy never lets me have it. She says it's bad for me. But, because today is my first day at this new school, she said I could have some as a special treat.
The boy looks at me, then at my sandwich, the back at me.
"Ohwell" he begins hesitantly. I smile at him again, a big first grader smile, showing all me teeth. Maybe he's just nervous.
"Well"he begins again. "It doesnt look like nutella."
I look at him, confused.
"It looks like POO!" He cries. A circle of kids who have surrounded us begin cackling with laughter. A chant starts up 'POO EATER POO EATER' over and over again.
Tears well in my eyes, and I get up, dropping my sandwich on the ground as I run away from that horrible place, their chant ringing in my ears; never ceasing.
I shook myself out of my dream, blinking at the harsh lights. Molli staring at the front of the room, her eyes glazed over you could tell she wasnt paying the slightest bit of attention. The rest of the grade, however, wasnt even trying to pretend. A row in front of me, two girls were painting their nails; next to them two guys were carving things into the table; behind them a girl was texting a guy 2 rows in front of her.
I had been sleeping, a usual occurrence in science. I mean, really, who gives a damn how electricity is delivered to our home? I flick the switch and the light comes on, thats good enough for me.
I laughed at that thought. It reminded me of that song by Cookie Monster 'C is for Cookie'. It was quite tempting at that point to launch into my own rendition of 'C is for Cookie', but it was lucky I didnt seeing as everyone was staring at me like I'd done something really bad.
"Is there something amusing about electrons travelling along an AC or a DC?" My teacher asked irately.
I suppressed a giggle. My science teacher said electrons like I was pronounced 'eeleectrones' and AC DC sounded like a reference to the band.
"Well?"
"No!" I told him. "It's just"
Quick brain, think of an excuse
"I was remembering something funny that happened yesterday!"
He gave me a sardonic look. "You mean to tell me, that you burst out laughing, in complete silence about something that happened yesterday?"
God, it sounded stupid when he said it.
"Ummyes?"
"Umm yes" he mimicked cruelly. "Be confident in your answer, and make sure its the right one"
I felt a hatred filling up inside my body. I shot him a look reserved for Hayden and gum stuck to the bottom of my shoe. "Yes, that's exactly what I'm telling you. Yesterday was much more interesting than right now, so what else would I be thinking of?"
The second the words were out of my mouth, I regretted it. I had this horrible habit of saying things I didnt mean whenever I was angry, and this teacher had a horrible habit of putting me on detention when I did just that.
"Well well well, another after school detention seems to be in order, seeing as you haven't learnt to control your tongue since our last meeting"
I cringed and sunk low into my seat, praying that he didnt remember I was actually due for a Saturday detention. After four detentions, the school policy was to get a Saturday detention.
"Oh wait!" he said suddenly, his voice filled with unbridled glee. "This is your fourth detention, is it not?"
I shook my head. No, it wasnt my fourth detention. It was my seventh, but he didnt have to know that.
"Well, I think it is"He sang joyfully. "I'll see you on Saturday morning Miss Thompson"
I groaned and sunk lower in my seat.
