"Catch!" a voice shrieked at me across the oval. I snapped out of my daydream in time to see a cricket ball hit me smack in the arm.
"Ouch!" I cried, holding onto my arm. Biting the inside of my cheek, I fought back tears. I glanced around the oval, seeing several grinning faces staring back at me. One stood out the most, his blue eyes glinting happily in the sun.
"That HURT!" I cried at the boy.
"Well I told you to catch it!"
I snatched the ball off the ground and threw it at him with all my might. It landed 2 feet in front of his shoes, and rolled to a stop against his toes. The class shrieked with laughter at my pitiful attempt at revenge.
"Poo eater can't throw!" one voice spoke up above the rest, which caused them all the fall around in fits of mirth.
A lone tear rolled down my cheek. I wiped it away, before anyone could see it, glancing at my arm. An angry red mark was beginning to rise up and it was tender to touch.
All of a sudden, another ball came out of nowhere and landed in the same spot on my arm. I cried out in pain and shock, the tears falling freely. The teacher, who had been lost in her own world, noticed me told that boy to take me to sickbay.
He kept bumping into my sore arm the whole way there, calling me names as we walked.
"Care to join us, Ms Thompson?"
I shook myself awake to find everyone in the auditorium staring at me. Crap. I fell asleep. Again.
"Yeah, I'm good now" I told her rubbing my eyes in a vain effort to wake up, at least a little.
"Ok, now that Valerie has decided to join us," the teacher began in monotone, giving me a very pointed stare as she mentioned my name. I smiled back sweetly. "I'm going to allocate you partners to get started with your service."
She looked down the list, rubbing her chin every now and then.
"Hipson and Stewart bathrooms; Ivyson and Linken eating area; Thompson and Smith library" she rattled off more names but I was frozen in my seat, unable to move, unable to think.
She didnt just say Smith, did she?
Hayden approached me guardedly.
Yes, she did just say Smith.
I gave him my best 'keep out of my way if you want to keep your left pinky' stare before stomping off to the library, fuming.
He raced after me, obviously paying no attention to my glare. "Hey, wait!"
I spun around. "What?"
"Well, we gotta work together, and that means you have to at least be civil"
I snorted. "Unlikely."
He looked taken aback at my abruptness. Then he looked angry.
"Why do you hate me!? It's not like you've ever spoken more than two words to me!" His eyes flashed cobalt with his rage.
I took a menacing step towards him and leaned in real close to his right ear. "I'm not going to justify myself to you." I hissed at him slowly, emphasising every word, before shooting him one last contemptuous look and storming off.
Fury bubbled inside of me. I cursed his existence with every step I took. I hated him. Hated him. Everything about him made me just want to scream.
I spent the next 3 hours cursing everything about him, updating my mental list of things that annoyed me about him, and just staying out of his way as much as possible. Surprisingly, that was fairly easy. Maybe he had finally taken the hint and was going to leave me alone.
