"Here you go Miss. Veronica." A man in his late thirties said laying a chicken salad in front of Veronica. "Thanks Gary." she said as she began digging into her lunch. Veronica was too wrapped up in reading her notes that she got from her father every morning to notice the guy heading her way.
It was only when her two body guards, Gary and James, stepped in front of her and stopping the guy in his tracks. "What do you need boy?" James asked dangerously. Veronica rolled her eyes. James being dangerous was in a way funny.
You would never take him as the guy who would hurt a fly. But appearances can be very deceiving. Veronica knew this for a fact. "James stand down." Veronica ordered. James did as he was told and went and stood behind Veronica.
"Can I help you?" Veronica asked politely. The boy gulped nervously and opened his mouth to say something but didn't get a chance. Another man approached her. This time it was a familiar face. "Vee we need to talk." The man said before glancing at the boy in disgust.
"Okay. I'm sorry-" Veronica stopped and waited for the boy to give her his name. "Oh uh Greg." he replied. "I'm sorry Greg. Maybe we can talk another time?" she smiled before slipping away with her two body guards and the mysterious stranger.
Leaving Greg standing there dumbfounded. 'At least she talked to me...' Greg thought optimistically. Meanwhile Veronica was being escorted just a few feet away. "What do you need Jeremy?" she asked venomously.
"Lovely way to greet your Uncle." He shot back. Veronica glared daggers at him before responding. "You'll regain my respect once you start acting like a true member of this family. Your on probation and are being watched heavily." she spat.
Jeremy chuckled and rubbed a hand over his chin. "I didn't betray the family Vee. I was under cover. Your father just doesn't want you to trust me." Jeremy explained for what felt like the millionth time to Veronica.
But this was just like every other time he tried to explain his supposed innocence. "Well he's succeeding. Look I'm not getting into this with you right now. What did you need?" She questioned getting impatient fast with her 'Uncle'.
"Ah yes. I got word from an inside source that Nicholas is up to something." Jeremy told her regaining all seriousness. "Nicholas is always up to something. Besides why come to me??"
Jeremy shook his head and took out a pack of cigarettes. "Because this time it involves you." Veronica laughed, "It always involves me." Veronica was the heir to the Richards empire. And the next in line to run a large majority of the West coast mafia.
She had been a prime target since she was fifteen. Every mob boss that wasn't part of her father's brother hood was after her. What Jeremy was telling her was nothing new and was wasting her time.
"And Nolan." Jeremy added as he lit up a cigarette. Veronica's muscles tightened at the mention of her brother. What would Nicholas want with Nolan? He was a nobody to the dark world Veronica was forced to live in.
Veronica had never met her brother due to his extreme illnesses. Immediately after he was born he was shipped to live with a family member in Italy that could take care of him and make sure he got the help he needed.
And also keep him safe in case anybody that didn't need to know about him somehow found out he existed. Veronica was envious of her brother. He had a somewhat normal life. He didn't have to grow up in the same environment she did.
He wasn't forced to learn every fighting skill known to man. Or how to use a gun properly. Or how to dispose of an unwanted body. No he wasn't cursed to live the life Veronica was. Not that she didn't enjoy what she did, because believe me she did.
Sometimes she just wished that she could have a normal life. Whatever that was. "How in the world did Nicholas find out about Nolan?" Veronica asked her anger rising. She may have never met him but she was still protective of him.
"One of our wonderful undercover rookies ratted him out when Nicholas found out he was working for us. Poor guy died...not that he didn't deserve it." Jeremy snarled but regained composure. "What about Nolan?" asked Veronica
If Nicholas knew where her brother was that means he would have to be moved into a safer area. Her heart went out for the kid. Having to be moved out of his home with no explanation what so ever.
"He'll be moved of course. But none of us will know where to. Your father thinks its better that we don't know. That way no more mistakes like this can happen." he explained like it was something casual. But to these four it was something casual.
But to the unseen eavesdropper it was horrific. Veronica sighed and rubbed her forehead. "Okay so why did daddy send you? He doesn't want me to trust you remember." Veronica pointed out. Jeremy sighed and bit his lip.
"See that's just the thing. Your father doesn't know I'm here. He doesn't want you to know what's going on. He says it'll keep you safe. Of course I don't agree. If Nicholas is looking for Nolan the first person he's going to seek is you."
Veronica nodded in agreement. For once since the incident she was siding with her Uncle. "And if you knew that he was looking for you it'd be easier to hide from him. And you'd be more alert. Your father apparently doesn't agree with me on that one."
"It's because he doesn't want me to be part of all of this. I'm his little girl I can understand that. But Nicholas made sure I was thrust into this world. And now that I'm here there is no way I can turn back. I'm already a sought out target." Veronica sighed.
Jeremy bobbed his head in agreement. "And even if I did leave and resign my title I'd still be a target. Daddy just needs accept I'm part of this whether he or I like it." she explained.
"Hey kiddo you don't have to tell me that. But I know that alot of the guys are upset with the fact when your father steps down your going to be in charge of the business." Jeremy told her before taking a drag from his cigarette.
Veronica rolled her eyes at his comment. "What are the afraid a girl can't do it? They've all seen me in action. Ugh I'm not dealing with this right now I have class." she stated as she turned around. She was ready to start walking away until her Uncle caught her by the arm.
"I don't think going to class will be such a good idea." Jeremy said as he nodded his head to a few goons that were gathered at each entrance at the school. Veronica instantly noticed them as Nicholas' puppets. Sighing she had no other choice.
She was going to have leave school for a while. Something she didn't ever want to do. Education was very important to Veronica. She did want to make a life for herself outside of the mafia world. And having a proper education was one of the only ways she could do that.
But now she was having to give it all up because of her life as a mafia member. "Listen I want you to go home and hide out in the safety parts of the house got it? Tell your father everything you told me. Make him believe that you need to stay protected." Jeremy ordered.
Veronica nodded her head in agreement and motioned for Gary and James to follow her. She made sure they saw Nicholas' guys that way she'd have extra protection. Right now she couldn't risk being exposed.
And if it benefited Nicholas in any way shape or form he would make sure she was exposed. And that would make her an even bigger target. 'Dammit why can't I just be a normal college student?!' thought Veronica as they made there way to the limo.
Jeremy waved her off before turning back around only to come face to face with Nicholas himself. "Ah Jeremy so nice to see you again." Nicholas smirked devishly. Jeremy glared daggers at him. "What do you want Nicholas?"
"Oh why so testy?" Nicholas chuckled before continuing, "Anyway I want your darling neice. Apparently she's valuable. Who knew?" he chuckled. Jeremy shook his head. "I'm not selling out my neice Nicholas. I am done working for you." Jeremy told him boldly.
Nicholas laughed and put a hand on Jeremy's shoulder. "Oh but Jeremy you don't have a choice. Remember I control your life." Nicholas said angrily. Jeremy's eyes widened when he felt the barrel of the gun pressing against his stomach.
"Now tell me where she is and I won't put a bullet in you." he ordered. Jeremy sighed in defeat. "Okay. They currently reside at-" Jeremy cut himself off and boldly knocked the gun out of Nicholas hand.
He then kneed him in the stomach before taken off. 'It's worse than I thought. We have to get Veronica to a safer place and now.' Jeremy thought as he ran as fast as he could.
He needed to get his stubborn brother to listen to him otherwise the Richards family would soon be facing their own deaths.
