Kelly was quickly trying to navigate through the hectic haze of people. Getting on time to school through the busy maze of transportation of Chicago was quite a task. But Kelly has managed to be on time every single day for the past two months since school started in September.
But today it looked as though getting to school on time would be impossible. Today started off with a rough start when Kelly realized she overslept and looked over at her accursed clock that was blinking 1:43. Kelly realized the electricity must of shut off in the middle of the night due to the storm which also shut off her alarm.
Rushing downstairs Kelly quickly pulled on the cleanest clothes she could find off the floor. Running into the kitchen grabbing an apple for breakfast, and not having enough time to brush her hair or properly wake up, ran her finger through her hair trying to catch the L before the train left the station.
After such a rough start Kelly should of stayed home where she was safe in bed. But no, Kelly being as stubborn as she was had to find a spot on the crowded L with all the other adults crammed into the small space trying to get to their nine to five job. Kelly had to grudgingly stand and hold onto dear life while the train shook and trembled as though it was about to fall apart at any second.
The train finally stopped two blocks from her school. Kelly looked down at her watch and figured if she ran those two blocks she would just be able to make the morning bell. So as soon as the doors of the train opened Kelly bolted out the door.
Kelly wasn't paying attention to where she was going, the only thought on her mind was getting to school before she was deemed by the teachers, late. Short of breath, Kelly could finally see the building and pushed herself a little more. Looking down at the cement gray ground while her messenger bag bruised her thigh with each step she took. She knew she would make it, the school was just a little bit farther.
All of a sudden Kelly could feel herself sprawled all over the hard cement floor. The wind was knocked out of Kelly and she thought she saw little stars going around her head. She looked around to see if she ran into some pole or wall that Kelly didn't see until it was too late. But there was nothing of that sort. Just some guy face down on the ground about five feet away from her with about a hundred papers surrounding him and they were now getting blown away by the Chicago wind.
Finally able to regain normal breathing Kelly got up and was about to help the guy who was still face down on the ground. Though a bell rang, the one from the school. Kelly could almost feel her blood boil knowing that this inconsiderate person ran into and made her late for the very first time in all the eleven years she had gone to school.
A little bit of sympathy left Kelly as she bent over and said, "Here, let me help you up."
The guy muttered a barely audible, "Thanks," and looked up to see who had to run into him.
As soon as Kelly saw the face of the person that she ran into all sympathy left. She stood up straight, crossed her arms, and scowled. Thinking, out of the three million people I could of run into in this city and I had to run into him.
The guy seemed to be speechless, though spluttered out, "I'm sorry."
Kelly looked down at him with disgust, "Sorry won't help anyone Wentz. Your stupid self made me late to class."
Kelly now grabbed her messenger bag and stalked off to the school.
She could hear the boy getting up from the ground, grabbing as many papers as he could, and then jogging over to her. Kelly tried to pick up her pace but the boy caught up with her. "Please wait. Hear me out. I really am sorry...for everything. Do you think maybe we could talk?"
Kelly gave him a look of pure hate, "I don't think I could talk to you like a civilized person honestly."
Pete looked down at the ground knowing that he would have to give up, "Okay. I guess I better get going." Though he felt something wet on his chin. He touched it and pulled his hand away and saw that there was lots of blood on his hand. He must of cut open his chin when he fell.
Kelly saw the cut, it was pretty big. Almost a little too big to heal on its own. Slightly concerned Kelly said, "You may want to go and get stitches."
Pete shrugged and said, "I think I'll be fine. I'm pretty sure I had worse than this."
Kelly again nervous when looking at the cut, "No, I really think you should go and get stitches. You could get it infected and they may have to chop off your head or something. And don't think for one second that I am going to be blamed for the homicide of your sad soul."
Pete could feel a little twitch of a smile in the corner of his mouth. "All right, if you really think I am going to die. But how about we go get some coffee and talk, and then I promise to go to hospital."
Kelly gave Pete a nervous look and then looked over her shoulder at the school with an anxious look and shrugged, "Well, I guess if I am ever going to skip a day it should be today. We were going to have a trigonometry test that I wasn't really ready for."
The gray remains of a friendship scarred.
