I remember my parents once took me out into the woods and left me there. It was an odd ritual that had been done in my mother's family since only God knows when. I didn't really think the whole idea was very sensible, neither did Dad. He ranted and argued with Mom over it for years. Because they argued so much over it I got to be thirteen before they finally agreed to do it.
The rules were that at the age of seven a child (it didn't matter if you were boy or girl) got left in the woods only a little bit away from the campsite. The parents of the child walked with them to the spot where they were to be left and then walked away. The child then has to make it back to the camp by the next day or it fails.
Mom never told us what happens to the kid if it fails, but I know none of us ever failed it. I passed with flying colors. Mom said she had never known any kid to make it back in thirty minutes. I thought it was because I was thirteen and a teenager with common sense.
Donny, my younger brother, made it back in less then four hours. Mom would always boast at a family get-to-together that she had protgs for children. I always thought she was a nut case. She did practically grow up in an insane asylum (so did most of her family). I don't even know why Dad married her.
Maybe it didn't really matter much how fast we made it out just that we made it out at all. I just know that the woods never scared Donny or me. Our mother had after all brainwashed us into being nature freaks. She wouldn't touch anything that wasn't organic or eco-friendly. And every weekend we took the family electric car and drove into some far off forest and survived on our own without any use of civilized technology.
I think that's why it broke Mom's heart when I started dying my hair and hanging out with David. She said David was a fruit because he wore his jeans a little tight. I thought David was the greatest. He was the first to show me a world that didn't evolve plants and animals.
I didn't like the city that much when David and his family first took me there. It smelled too much and there weren't enough plants. I got sick and had to go home early. After that I wouldn't talk to David for a week. That was when I was eight.
After that I became the girl who could manage to survive anywhere. I loved the woods but I was a nature lover who didn't die whenever shoved into the city. David thought I was the weirdest kid he had ever set eyes on. But I also happened to be the first kid he had ever set eyes on.
David and I met when we were babies. We had cribs next to each other in the hospital. Both of us were premature babies and our families where neighbors. So they always set up play dates. David and I were then inseparable much to Mom's displeasure.
Now I was stuck in the Appalachian Mountains being chased by vampires I felt homesick. I even missed my mom. I missed David the most though.
I sighed as I leaned against a tree. Maybe they were looking for me already? Maybe they might be able to find me before the vampires did? I doubted that. The vampires had everyone working for them even the damned government. They'd tell my parents I was dead and that'd be the end of it.
I cursed and continued walking. I could see the lake just ahead. I slipped off my shoes as soon as the woods turned into a sandy shore. The sand felt nice between my toes.
I stripped down to my undies and ran into the cold water. It splashed up into my face and I laughed. I felt like a kid again.
I twirled around in the water splashing myself more and wetting my hair. Most girls would freak out about getting their hair wet. David said that was my best quality: I didn't care so much about how I looked that I kept myself from doing things. Of course I cared, only geeks and friendless people really dont care.
I dived into the water with eyes close. As soon as the water settled somewhat around me I opened my eyes. The water and the sun made dizzying patterns on the lake bed and fishies swam away as soon as I came near them. I swam after them.
Then my lungs began to sting, hurting, aching for air. I loved that feeling. Like everything is getting narrower and slowly you understand things more and more. Then BAM! You break from the water again and suck in that sweet air and you smile in relief. Aww, bliss.
But when I exploded from the water this time I found not sweet pleasure but terror. Standing upon the shore line was a boy. A boy with dark hair and pale skin. He glowed in the radiance of the sun and even though I could not see his I eyes I knew what he was. Vampire.
"Kitty Hamilton. What I strange name Kitty," he chuckled.
"Go the f**k away." I stood then I remembered what I was wearing and ducked back into the water.
He laughed smirking at me with dark humor. "Sorry, but no can do."
I was being tossed into a sleek blue sports car before I could scream. "Don't forget my clothes you asshole!" I said as the boy started to get into the drivers sit.
He sighed, shook his head, and closed the door. He was back again before I could even try to get out. He threw my clothes at my head and started the car without even looking at me.
"Thanks," I mumbled and shook out my hair.
I could tell the water was bugging him but he didn't say anything. This was an ass of a vampire. Reminded me of someone. Oh yeah my ex Clark.
Clark was one of those "popular" kids. I was amazed he took an interest in me. He usually went for the porn star look-a-likes. He didn't have much to him but his arrogance and his looks. Typical guy.
"So what's your name?" I asked my capture as I managed to get my clothes on.
He didn't answer. "Oh I get it. Don't think humans are worth talking to huh?"
"Bull's-eye."

Everytime I see maybe I don't wanna be caught up in the wreckage too.
