It was four days before Christmas. Johnny's parents would be here Christmas Eve, expecting us to have the house decorated with snowmen and dancing Santas. The thing is, we don't even have our decorations bought yet.
"Mattie?" Johnny whined in singsong, slipping next to me on the couch as I watched National Lampoon's Christmas for the fiftieth time.
He was the only person that could ever call me Mattie and live.
"Yeah, babe?"
"My parents will be here in three days to celebrate Christmas...and we don't even have a tree or any decorations, yet."
I sighed, "I suppose you want to go shopping, then?"
Johnny nodded and grabbed my hand, pulling me up, "Noooow!"
I couldn't say no to his whining and I followed him to the car.
"Look at these!" Johnny held up a plastic container holding green and red bulbs. I nodded, not paying much attention, and he set them in the cart.
I threw a bag of red tinsel in the cart and Johnny put a bag of green in it. I followed him to the fake Christmas tree aisle and of course he picked out the largest type there was.
"It's ten feet tall, Johnny. It won't fit in our living room."
"Yes it will!"
"Our ceiling is hardly eight feet tall--"
I was cut off by the humorous sight of tiny little Johnny attempting to pick up the large box and shove it in our half-full cart.
He pouted, "Won't fit."
I smiled at him and took the six-foot Christmas tree, setting it broadside across the cart. He blinked and walked away in a huff, leading me to yet another aisle full of holiday decorations.
He added fake holly and red bows to the cart. Somehow we gained fake poinsettas, too. I snuck a piece of mistletoe into the cart as Johnny started rambling off everything we had bought.
By the time we arrived back at the house, it was dark. I turned on the radio so we could work with some music. The local radio station was playing the 100 Heaviest Christmas Songs on repeat until the holidays were over. Metallica's Carol of the Bells rang throughout the house. I smiled.
"Hmmm..." Johnny had his thinking face on as he held our dancing Santa, unsure where to put it. He finally decided to set it directly next to the fireplace. I moved it away a bit. I don't think Johnny realized Santa was flammable.
"Mattie!" Johnny whined, pouting at me, "Where are we going to put the tree?"
"In the corner, probably."
"But the chair--" I moved the armchair out of the way and next to the couch before Johnny could complain anymore. He smiled as I removed the zipties binding the Christmas tree's box. He danced around putting up wooden reindeer and ceramic snowmen up everywhere. He put a wreath on the front door reading, "Happy Holidays" with two little jingle bells. Holly and poinsettas covered the house, around picture frames, candles, and anything else Johnny could make work.
I set up the tree because Johnny was afraid it would fall on him if he set it up wrong. I wrapped the red and green lights around it, plugging it into the wall. Johnny began putting bulbs on, making sure no reds were directly next to each other and no greens were directly next to each other. I smiled. He was too cute.
We threw tinsel all over the tree and I topped it with the star, since Johnny couldn't reach.
"Mattie?" I turned to him and he threw some leftover tinsel at me. I made a face and pulled him under the archway.
"You're supposed to throw it back!" he whined. I smiled and put my arms around his waist, kissing his lips, softly. He made a noise and pushed his tongue past my lips, wrapping his arms around my neck. I massaged his tongue with my own, nuzzling his neck as we gasped for breath.
"Jesus," he breathed, "what was that for?"
I pointed to the mistletoe I had secretly placed above the archway above us, "Mistletoe."
Oh, kiss me under the mistletoe again. ♥
