Christmas
The happiest holiday of the year..
So they say at least.
Decorations fill every window on the streets as their vibrant colors and ornament lights blink and shine in unison as they suck up the earth's power and resources.
Yellow, red, green and purple extra large Christmas balls decorated hazardously above telephone poles and traffic lights fill the streets making traffic jams occur as people stop and point.
"Tis the season to be jolly" Frank Sinatra vocals reach out into the clear frosty sky, along with many other famous carolers as their over-joyous rhythms and beats screech out of speakers and amplifiers in every shopping center.
Couples holding hands and snuggling next to each other stroll the streets of Manhattan, enjoying the pre Christmas weather as they share the Christmas spirit
I must say, it all NAUSEATES me!
As I walk through the streets, towards my apartment, I'm cursed to dodge couples and families that fill the streets with oversized shopping bags filled with Christmas goodies, making it an obstacle course just to get from one block to the next.
With one hand held out for balance, the other gripped my blackberry phone next to my ear as I hear my mothers' nags as opposed to the Christmas Carols that escape the shopping centers.
"Oh don't you just love the Christmas songs Adriana!" she beamed through the other line as I dodged a mad taxi driver while I crossed the street.
"With a passion" I exaggerated while rolling my eyes.
"I can't understand how you can be such a prune in these festive weeks, honestly Adriana; with that sour personality you'll never catch a nice man for the holidays."
I sighed, "Mom, you know that once we start on the male baiting topic I will declare this telephone call over."
To be honest, I was quit happy being single. I'm a successful and happy woman. I was born in California and frankly had enough sun and ocean for my lifetime. When I turned 21, I was engaged to my long time high school sweet heart and couldn't believe how perfect life could be. Of course, when I called off the engagement a day before the wedding, due to the fact that my future hubby was fooling around with the wedding planner, I packed my bags and headed over to the busiest place on earth. New York City.
I am now 24 years old and a very important and super good editor for the popular magazine for men, MAXIM.
"But sincerely Adriana, when will you take time off from that over rated job you have and put on some heels and head to a bar to meet a man!" my mother nagged.
"For your information," I stated as I dodged a couple who decided to stop in the middle of the sidewalk to take a picture of an over decorated shopping window. "I am wearing heels, and as for the man part.."
To my dismay, I was so busy trying to justify my actions for being anti-testosterone that I didn't move out of someone's way on time. My shoulder crashed against what felt like a brick wall, making me spin around to face the opposite direction. My phone flew off my hand and flipped in the air with such speed that all I could do was damn myself for not getting insurance on it.
My phone began to tumble down much too fast for human eyes to even focus on it, but right when I saw my phone pass my shoulders and plunge to the icy floor of New York, a pale hand cradled my phone just as I was about to dive onto my knees.
I halted in mid action, stunned by the sudden act of this event. I gave myself a second to compose myself and then followed the hand that connected to a cotton black coat. My eyes traveled up to the shoulders, past the neck and lips, till they connected with pale cunning blue eyes.
To call the man that stood in front of me hot or sexy was an understatement and certainly an insult. To refer to him as a man was already a deprived description.
He was tall, a good 6 feet and more. I am merely 5'5. His hair was tidy, short and dirty blond which praised his features. His skin was much paler than most and looked incredibly soft. His lips looked inviting and absolutely delicious.
He casually smiled and that in itself was so striking it filled my head with sinful thoughts.
"Please forgive me. I should have been watching my step." His voice carried out over the traffic noise and conversations over the passer bys. It was melodic, deep yet smooth. It drummed in my ears and echoed inside my stomach.
"Will you be alright?" he said, as he broke his gaze from mine and looked over at my shoulder.
"Oh! Don't worry about it" I said nervously as I waved at the air pretending it was nothing but a simple nudge, when in fact, my shoulder was beginning to pulse.
He held my phone out towards me, as he looked down at his hand. His facial expressions changed from apologetic and kind to closed and uninterested.
I reached for my phone, wishing to feel his skin along my finger tips, I tried grabbing his hand as I reached, but his hand moved away when I closed my fingers; barley catching my phone in mid air.
I placed the phone next to my ear only to hear my mother's voice, "Are you talking to a man??"
"Thank you" I said, looking up to his eyes, hoping to see them connect to mine.
"You're welcome" he said as his eyes met mine. They were the same pale blue, yet they were distant, practically hostile, as a gleam shone from them.
"Get his number, I'll call you back" I heard my mother announce as she hung up on me.
I broke the glance and turned to my phone. "Mom? Wait!... hello??" but she was gone.
When I looked back up, he was gone as well.
I turned in my spot, searching for the tall man in the black coat. But being as tall as he was, this was New York City.. and finding someone specifically was like distinguishing one ant from another in an ant farm.
Within seconds, my phone began ringing, I picked up without looking at the caller I.D. as I rose up on my toes to look over the crowd. "Hello!"
"Adriana.. are you still with him?" I heard my mother whisper as if she could be heard if she spoke too loud.
"With who?!" I groaned as I wished I had checked the caller I.D.
"Oh don't pretend, who was that man?" she said louder
I sighed, "It was a stranger, he left already."
"Adriana Baltierre! How could you let him get away?!"
Disappointedly, I turned around and continued with the flow of the crowd, looking back every other step, hoping to find the stranger which had caught my eye ever since I had arrived to the city, as I was given the lecture on how to flirt by my very own mother.
