..::Chapter one::..

I sat on the empty park bench, watching the orange and brown leaves fall from the autumn trees. It was dusk, and the skys had turned from gray to a light yellowish pink in less than half an hour. It wasn't unusual for me to stay out so late, I usually came to the park to think about things where I wouldn't be disturbed. After a couple minutes of thinking about school, my thoughts absently drifted to my mother whom had died in a car accident the year before. I felt tears swell up in my eyes, and didn't try to stop them from streaming down my cheek.

I have lived alone with my father, Michael, ever since the accident. Michael was a campaign manager, so whenever there was a campaign going on, he would have to leave me for long periods of time. In the past, it had been fine. In the past, my mother was alive. Father would leave me with Mother whenever he went away, but since she was dead, he had to bring me with him.

But everything was different this fall. I had turned 17 a couple weeks ago, making it legal for me to stay home alone with weekly check-ups from Father and million phone calls a day.

"Be good." He said to me with a week smile, the day he left. "No wild partys while I'm gone." Wild parties? I thought, Ha! Who would I invite? "I'll come to see you once a week and I'll call daily." He paused. "I love you Shawna. You know that, don't you?" I just nodded and embraced him tightly. He looked disappointed and hurt, but walked towards the door silently and turned when he reached it.

"Goodbye Shawna." He said in barely a whisper.

"Goodbye Dad." I replied. He waited for a moment, as if expecting me to say something, but I didn't. Sighing, he opened the door and walked out to the cab that was waiting on the corner and got in. I watched until the cab was completely out of view then turned and got my boots and coat for my room.

And thats why I'm here right now, alone and depressed. The way its always been.

"Beautiful, isn't it?" asked a male voice behind me. I spun in surprise and saw a teenager boy who looked my age, wearing a black dress shirt with a red tie and black pants. He had black hair and a thin layer of black eyeliner around his eyes, and a piercing on the left side of his lip.

"Huh? Oh you mean the sunset? Yeah, it is." I said quickly, not wanting it to seem like I was caught off guard. He laughed.

"Sorry if I scared you." He said. I frowned

"You didn't scare me." I said non-convincingly. But he just laughed.

"I'm Frank." He said and extended his hand, which I shook.

"Shawna." I said. We both just stayed there smiling at each other awkwardly until I looked at my watch. 9:59 PM. I looked up at Frank.

"Um... I had better be getting home now...uh...see you later, Frank." I said, he smiled at me.

"Bye Shawna, see you later." And with that, I turned and walked out of the park, past my high school, past the rose garden and up the front steps of my front porch.

As soon as I got into my room I crashed down on the bed and sighed.

How odd... I've never seen him here before... did he just move here or something? I wonder how old he is, and what school he goes to...?

Soon enough, I had fallen fast asleep with my shoes still on and my hair still up, but hey, I was a teenager with the house all to myself for a month... it's not like anyones here to scold me. And even if there were, its not like they'd notice me.

Kids will have fun and offend. They don't want to and don't fit in. ♥
Rate high if you liked it and low if you didn't.

Or in this case... give it an A+ if you liked it and F if you didn't ^_^
