When I got home I heard some laughing from the kitchen and ran in. "There she is!" I smiled and hugged my step-grandfather Victor. He had married my father's mother only a couple years before. They had moved up north not long after the wedding so I never got to see either one. "How's my favorite granddaughter?" he smiled.

"Good." I lied, actually I couldn't stop thinking about Nick and his mother, but I couldn't tell them about it. "What are you two doing here?" I asked.

Victor smiled. "Can't we come visit once in a while?" he asked.

"Of course." I said and gave my grandmother a hug as my parents came in.

They did their normal greeting. My grandmother said something to embarrass the two, not to be mean but to have fun, my father and Victor said "Hello, how's everything?" to each other and my mother was her normal sweet self and gave them both hugs. After awhile I got bored and dragged Cal upstairs after she greeted our grandparents. We did our homework within minutes then ran to the gaming room, which was a new addition to the castle that I personally requested. It had arcade games, a giant screen tv hooked up with all the latest gaming consoles, a wall of games, and a giant Dance Dance Revolution machine with the bars on either side. We killed time in there before we had to go to bed.

When I finally showered, changed and curled up under my cheets I remembered Nick and his mother. Why had he seemed so reluctant to let me see inside his house at first? And what was wrong with his mother? And I couldn't help myself from wondering how he could go to such an expensive private school when he didn't seem to have that much money. It sounded stuck-up at first but it was a logical question. Public schools are just about free, but private schools are expensive. It's not like private schools made you smarter, they were just more strict. I couldn't stop thinking about all of this even when I slept, I still wondered about it. I had a dream about the two, but it was just a replay of what had happened earlier.

The whole weekend I kept thinking about it and finally when I got to school on Monday I felt reassured that I would be able to find answers. Cal, Allan, and I arrived a bit early so we waited in the lobby area for Nick. Cal kept teasing me and saying I was in love with him and making Allan go insane at the mere idea that anybody (especially a boy) could lay his hands on me, but I wasn't in love with him. I'll admit he was cute and he definately sttracted attention from most of the girls at school (it wasn't hard to see) but he was just a friend, nothing more, nothing less.

We waited until the minute-bell rang telling us that in a minute we needed to be sitting at our desk with the stuff we needed for first period sitting on our desk, our shirts tucked in and etc. or we'd be marked as tardy and sent to the principal to give our excuse for being late. "Crap, he's going to be late." Cal said as she jumped off the couch we were sitting on. "Come on, lets go!"

We followed her to our first period and got in our desks just as the bell rang. The teacher glared at us, angry that she couldn't mark us late, then went about her buisness writing problems on the board while the principal made her announcements over the intercom. Just as the announcements were finishing up and the principal was saynig some cheesy way of saying "Have a great day!" Nick came through the door. He went straight to the teacher and barely got a couple words out before she pointed to the door and said "Go to the principal!" He didn't bother to hurry, instead he put his stuff on the desk next to me and left, not bothering to stuff his shirt into his pants like it was suppossed to be.

The class was half over when he returned. He sat down at his desk solemly and buried his face into his arms, but not before I could see that something was troubling him. He didn't even bother to start on his homework when the teacher put the page and problem numbers on the board. I tried my best to work out the problems on my own so I didn't have to have Nick for help but finally I got stuck on a problem I just couldn't solve for the life of me and I leaned over and tapped on his shoulder. He shot up immedietly then started to fall back down but before he could I said his name. He looked over and I saw the dark circles under his eyes showing he hadn't slept much over the weekend

"Sorry I shouldn't have woken you, I was just hoping you could help me with this problem." I explained. "But you don't have to." I added quickly and turned back to my work, but he put his hand on my arm.

"I'll help." he said. He pulled his desk closer to mine and started to work the problem out on a clean sheet of paper. About halfway through the problem he asked, "You didn't tell anyone did you?"

"Tell anybody what exactly?" I asked.

He stopped scribbling down the problem and turned to face me. "My mother!" he hissed. "You didn't tell anyone about her, did you?"

I shook my head. "No, it's none of my buisness to tell anybody."

He nodded and looked back down at the math problem he was working with. "Thanks." he said quietly.

He finished showing me how to work out the problem then sat back while I did the next to make sure I could do it. When I was done I asked if I got it right and he nodded and said I had. "Hey, why were you late this morning?" I asked as I started working on the next set of problems.

He looked away and there was a long enough period of silence between the two of us that I assumed he didn't want to answer, but then he asked, "Will you tell anyone?"

I shook my head. "No, not unless you tell me I can."

He nodded, then looked thoughtfull as if he were contemplating whethere or not to tell me what was up, then he spoke. "I've been looking for a job all weekend, and I haven't been sleeping much so I woke up late and had to run to school." He explained quickly.

"A job? Why? Doesn't your dad work?" Then I instantly regret my question as his expression became pained. "I'm sorry, I shouldn't have assumed anything." I looked down, ashamed of myself.

"It's okay, you didn't know." he said calmly. "The truth is my dad's dead. He's been gone for years." he told me. "My mom can't work so I'm the one that's had to get a job."

There was silence again. He didn't seem like he wanted to explain much further so I took my chance and spoke. "I'm sure I can get you a job at the castle." I said it quiet enough so only he could hear though.

"No, I'll find one in town." The bell rang shortly after that and I went with Cal and Allan to my locker to get my stuff for my next class. We hung around outside of the classroom until the minute bell, talking about some recent stuff that'd come up about celebraties and, as usual, we made fun of them and their drama queen lives, then headed into the classroom. Allan reluctantly left me to go sit by the window where he sat day after day in that classroom while Cal and I seperated to go sit with our partners.

Nick was already sleeping when I got to our desks, which he had already pushed together, and sat down. The teacher passed out some work and as he passed up he thumped Nick on the head with his palm. Nick shot up instantly and looked alert for a second, but once the teacher had left he let himself fall back down to the desk and go back to sleep. The teacher explained our work for the day and told us the assignment included after-school work in which partners would still have to work together. When I heard this I wondered what Nick and I would do. If he had spent all weekend searching for a job he'd probably be willing to give up after-school time during the week too. When would we be able to do the project?

Once the teacher was done explaining things I got to work on the day's assignment, but I found it rather confusing and tapped on Nick's shoulder. He lifted his head and little. "Can you explain this?" I asked and he sat up and looked at his own copy of the assignment.

"It's a project, we have to do it together." he explained. He read it a little more and turned to me. "Any chance you have the money to buy the materials we'll need?" he asked, looking humiliated that he had to ask me to buy something for the two of us.

"Yeah, my parents give me allowance, I just have to make sure to show them what I buy." I explained.

He nodded and I could taste a bit of envy coming off of him.

"Hey, are you sure you don't want me to ask my dad if there are any jobs open?" I asked him quietly. "I'm sure he'd be glad to help if he knew your mom can't work, and he's asked to meet you anyways." I added. "You know, cause you're a guy and he's overprotective."

He shook his head. "There are plenty of other people who probably need a job like that more than me." he explained.

"Yeah but-"

"No buts." He said sternly. "I said no and I mean it."

I looked down, feeling bad. But if he wasn't so stubborn... "Okay."

Once he was sure we'd gotten off that subject he pointed out, "We should get to work on this."

The next day I asked Nick about coming to the castle. "We need to get to work on the project anyways, and all the stuff we need is at my place." I explained.

"We still need to go to the library." He said, trying to find a reason to not come to the castle.

"We have one." I told him. "Come on, there's internet, plenty of books, and all the materials I bought yesterday are in my room."

"Well I need to stop by my house..."

"We can go there on the way to my place." I said.

"There's just one thing." we both turned to Allan who had snuck up on us while we were talking. "Since you'll only be a guest there will be someone with the two of you at all times."

Nick thought about this for only a minute before he agreed to the plan. "Fine, I'll go over." He said. "But I can't stay for too long."

I nodded. "Okay, then we'll stop by our lockers right after creative writing then we can leave."

He agreed to the plan and we went our seperate ways for our fifth period. The last two hours dragged on forever and when they were finally over I almost ran out the door to my locker, but I forced myself to wait for Allan, Cal, and Nick. I ushered them to the lockers and Cal, Nick, and I put our stuff away quickly, mostly because I wasn't going to accept sluggishness, then I herded them to the front door. "Come on, hurry, hurry!" I ordered.

"Calm down Kat, it's like you're wanting alone time with Nick." Cal smirked then a smile crept across the bottom of her face as she thought up a dirty idea. "So that's why you wanted him over! Kat! Shame on you!"

"Shut up Cal or I'll have to invite Thatcher over." I smirked back while Nick tried to pretend he wasn't stuck in the middle of our little arguement, literly.

Cal turned pink. "I don't like Thatcher! He's just my partner!" she said defensively.

"Tsk, tsk, tsk. You're always denying something, poor Thatcher." I looked up and smirked as Cal started to go red.

"Why poor me?" I whiped around quickly and found I was standing in front of Thatcher.

"Cal li-" She covered my mouth from behind and started to drag me away before I could finish saying "Cal likes you."

We had to wait outside leaning against the limo while Nick spoke to Thatcher. I saw Thatcher looked surpirsed at something, then he turned to look outside at us, then back at Nick and he asked him something. Nick looke a bit worried too, but also like he was trying to reassure Thatcher of something. Then they said goodbye and exited out of the building and Thatcher walked off. Nick joined us at the limo. He stared at the thing for a moment, then jumped a little when the driver asked him if he would get in. Cal and I giggled at this, we'd never seen anyone so shocked by a limo before, other than Elle when she came to visit once, but she wasn't as shocked as Nick. He got in, a bit embarrassed by his surprise. I explained to the driver that it was Nick's place we had gone to the week before and he nodded.

We were at the apartment in no time and Nick told us he'd try to hurry, then he jumped out and pulled out a key from his pocket and went inside. About ten minutes later he came out and apoligized for making us wait, then got in. "What'd you have to stop for?" Cal asked.

"I had to make dinner for my mom, she's never been the best at cooking." he said. I knew he was lying. He might have made dinner for her, like pulling out cold leftover and heating them up, but he had also checked on her and such.

The ride to the castle was a bit funny. Nick was suprised that it was so far into the woods. To get to the castle there was a four lane road that sloped up a bit and had a few turns that had to be straigthed out over the years for limo service. It was a pretty nice ride, especially in the winter time when deer and such liked to play in the woods which was a no-hunting area. When we actually reached the castle Nick was shocked. "It's huge!" Was all he could say.

I smiled and told him, "It's bigger than it looks, it's just deep not wide." He looked at me with wide-eyes and I laghed and jumped ut of the limo, leading him quickly up to the front door so I could get out of the sun. I got inside and waited for Cal and Allan to finish getting in. "So are you the person who has to stay with us? Or is it someone else?" I asked Allan.

"No, I'm going to bed. I'll send someone else out." Allan yawned.

"Not Freddy though! He's creepy." I told him as he walked away. Once he was gone I turned to Nick. "Hungry?" I asked.

"Yeah, a little." he admitted and I skipped to the kitchen ahead of Nick and Cal while they followed walking.'

I got to the kitchen and ran in, not bothering to ring the cook, and pulled out some blood from the fridge. I poured three glasses and gave one to Nick and one to Cal. "Lets see, what's there to eat?" I started to go through the cabinets. I crawled up on the counter and stood up to see what was stashed away up top and I heard Cal below me.

"Kat! Your skirt!"

I quickly remembered I hadn't worn shorts that morning and jumped down, holding my askirt down so it didn't fly up. "Did you guys see anything?" I asked.

"Of course we did!" Cal said and Nick stared at the floor, shuffling his feet with embarrassment.

"Dammit." I blushed and looked down too. I was concentrating so much I didn't see Cal run over and hit the bell for the cook. He rushed in quickly and scolded Nick and I for being in the kitchen, and looking so embarrassed, then he ushered us out and asked us what we wanted to eat. We all ended up agreeing on pizza so he set about putting the ingredients together while we sat at the bar. After a while I sighed and jumped off the stool. "I'm going to go change, I'll be back in a little bit." I said and ran off with my stuff and up the stairs. I got to my room and quickly changed into a pair of baggy black paints with the chains, my favorite pair which had red outlines all over it, then I slipped into a shirt that ironically said "Bite Me" with red font that was suppossed to be "creepy" and two holes dripping with blood where dots for the "i" in "Bite" was suppossed to be. Lastly I pulled off my socks and slipped on a black hoodie. I ran out of my room, pulling my pants up a bit cause they liked to fall down, and slid down the stair railing.

"Kat, you know you shouldn't do that." Cal said before I reached the bottom. Her and Nick were standing at the bottom sipping blood from their glasses.

"So what?" I smiled and jumped off the bottom and landed perfectly, feeling the cold floor beneath my feet.

"You'll get in trouble." Cal pointed out.

"No one but you guys saw so I'll be fine." I said, running to the kitchen as I instantly got a craving for some blood.

The three of us sat there for a little bit, chatting about favorite music artists while I sat on the counter before my parents walked in. "Who's this?" My father asked, giving Nick a glare. Boy, this was going to be a long night.
