Gerard and his friends headed back to the park the next day, surprised to see Morgan sitting there, with the same book she was 'reading' yesterday placed in her hands, and up to her face.
Her hair worked as a curtain of black as it fell into her face as she read, just like it had done yesterday, and tricked the guys into thinking that she was reading her book instead of watching them play their game.
Gerard broke into a full-fledged grin as he trotted over to the bench she was sitting in, and tapping her shoulder.
Morgan jumped slightly, and whipped her head around to look. "Oh... hi..." she said, shyly. She hated being shy. She couldn't help herself, she was always skeptical about how people would treat her if she wasn't shy, and was an all-out freak. People wouldn't like her if she was like that. If she spoke her mind, or would punch someone every time she got angry at them. She wanted to be able to talk to other people, without stuttering and choking on her words like an idiot. She wanted to be able to go to the mall and talk to cute boys, without them thinking she was a bookworm and boring.
The only way she seemed she could flick the switch on the shyness was to shoot up her heroin.
"You wanna play with us this time?" Gerard asked her. "It's okay if you suck. You can be on my team."
"Um..." Morgan looked down at her watch, reading it's time. "I only have 'till five."
"That's cool, it's only three." Gerard spoke, smiling at her. "C'mon. Play with us. My brother really wants you to."
Morgan looked at her shoes, and then lifted her head and Gerard found a smile on her lips that almost matched his own. "Okay."
Gerard grinned even wider, if possible, and turn his head around and yelled to Mikey who was tossing the football back and forth with Ray, Frank in the middle trying to catch it, and Bob on the side laughing his ass off. "Hey Mikes! Morgan's playing!"
Morgan's eyes widened at how he knew her name. How did he know her name? Was there something she didn't know about Gerard? Was his father the principal? A cop? Oh, God she hoped his father wasn't a cop. Then he might know her record. That would be bad.
Gerard twisted his head back around and watched Morgan put her book back into her bag and stand up, flattening out her shirt and wiping invisible dust from the seat of her black skinny jeans.
Gerard started off with Morgan at his side, stealing glances at her every few steps.
She cleared her throat, and then looked to her side at him, opening her mouth to speak. "How did you know my name?" she asked.
"You're in my math class." Gerard chuckled. "You sit in front of me."
Morgan suddenly liked math a lot more. "Oh..." Morgan laughed.
Morgan and Gerard reached the other guys, and Gerard greeted them.
"Mikey, Frank, Bob, Ray," he started, pointing them all out for Morgan, even though she knew them all already. "This is Morgan. She's in my math class and on my team."
"Yesss!" Frank danced around. "She's on our team! That means it's fair, now! So no more tackling me!" he gloated at Ray.
"Oh, no, I can still tackle you." Ray said.
"Uhm, actually Ray," Bob cut in, "you can't."
"Why not?" Ray asked, looking at him like he was crazy.
"Because it's not cool to tackle girls." Bob snickered, watching Frank fume.
"I am not a girl!" Frank growled.
"Guys, let's just play, okay?" Gerard proposed, looking at them all, and watching them nod. "Alright. Frank, get over here."
Frank walked over and stood next to Gerard, glaring at Bob and Ray.
---- ----
So far, Morgan had been tackled to the ground four times. Once by Bob, twice by Ray, and once by Frank.
Frank got yelled at afterward for tackling a teammate.
She'd also succeeded in tackling Mikey to the ground, but when she tried to tackle Bob or Ray, she just clung to them, they weren't fazed by her weight even the slightest.
She didn't way that much, only one-hundred and four, but hey, that was quite a bit when you're running for a goal.
Morgan had scored two goals, and so far Ray's team was winning.
All in all, everyone had loads of fun. When Morgan looked down at her watch, she almost pissed her pants. It was six thirty! Her father was going to murder her. Quite literally. "Shitfuck, guys, I head great fun, but I've got to go. It's six thirty! I was supposed to be home at five!" Morgan muttered, fighting back tears that were threatening to fall, rushing over to the bench he stuff sat at, listening to everyone whine, except Gerard, who rushed over to her stuff with her.
She slung the strap to her bag over her shoulder and hurried to the end of the park, stepping onto the pavement of the sidewalk, and beginning her walk.
Gerard was still beside her.
"You'd better leave." Morgan said, not even looking at him.
"Why? I wanna walk you home." Gerard smiled, even though she couldn't see it.
"I don't need walked home, sorry. It's only a fifteen minute walk for the park. I don't think I'll be molested or raped on the way there." Morgan told him.
"It's Jersey, baby," Gerard grinned. "Anything can and most likely will happen."
"Yes, but it won't happen to me." Morgan shook her head, not even looking both ways as she crossed the street, almost getting hit by cars going both ways.
Gerard flipped them off as they honked at them, then caught up with Morgan again, and grabbed her arm. "What the hell? You could've been killed just then!"
"Murder for murder, doll." Morgan said, wrenching her arm from his grip.
Something was definitely up with Morgan, and Gerard noticed. "Alright, I got it, I'll leave. Sorry I tried to walk you home." Gerard glared.
"Thank you." Morgan said, flatly, and continued to walk down the dirt path the few feet to her house.
--- ---
Gerard walked back to the park, and was greeted by his friends, wondering what happened.
Gerard grunted as a response and kicked a rock.
"What?" Mikey asked, pushing his glasses up further on his nose.
"She told me to leave, that she didn't need walked home..." Gerard said, thinking back. "I thought something was funny... she really wanted me to leave..."
"Maybe her mom or dad would see she was with a boy and suspect something? Get mad? You remember how your mom and dad were, having a fit every time they saw you hanging around with Erika, they didn't even ask if she had a boyfriend, or if she was your girlfriend. They just started assuming you two were fucking every second you got in the backseat of your car." Ray laughed.
"I know... but something was different about this..." Gerard still stood there and pondered all of the facts. Maybe she had dogs that would tear your leg off if you got too close? Or maybe her father was sitting on the porch with a shotgun, and the first sign of a boy, he'd shoot?
There were so many possibilities floating around in his head, that he didn't even hear Ray talking until Mikey slapped him in the face. "What the fuck was that for?!" Gerard roared.
"You weren't listening! You were like, lost in infinity or something!" Mikey screeched. "Ray was talking to you."
"What did you want?" He turned to Ray. "Sorry, just thinking."
"It's okay, dude." Ray waved his hand, as if waving it off of the subject. "Anyway, I was wondering when you were going to drive us home? It's like, seven."
"Get in the car, I'll do it now." Gerard said, spaced out once again.
