They were at it again.
The oh-so imperfect couple.
Hannah Waters and Paul DiGiovanni.
Their relationship consisted of fighting and making up, fighting and making up, and oh, did I mention that they fought and made up a lot?
Today was one of the common days when a fight was occurring.
"I'm sick of this!" Paul shouted.
"You're sick of this?" Hannah screamed. "I'm sick of you! You overreact over every little thing that I do, but it's fine for you to parade around like the town tramp."
"Do you think they'll ever stop fighting?" Martin Johnson asked from a reasonable distance away. He was joined by his friend and bandmate Bryan, and his friends Alex and Jack from All Time Low, along with Alex's girlfriend.
"Probably not," Bryan shrugged. "They go at it nearly every day."
It was hard for Bryan to watch Hannah and Paul and their continuous fights. Hannah was his cousin and he considered her more like a sister. Paul was one of his best friends and he always felt caught in the middle during their arguments.
If it was bad for Bryan, it was even worse for Jack Barakat.
Secretly, or not so secretly, depending on who you asked, Jack was in love with Hannah.
He had been ever since the moment he was introduced to her. He tried hard to keep it from being obvious, after all, it wasn't exactly acceptable to be in love with one of your friend's girlfriend. But people still found out regardless. It was hard not to notice, with the looks he gave her and the way he lit up whenever she walked into a room.
Hannah and Jack were incredibly close. Jack was the first person Hannah would go to whenever she had had a fight with Paul and needed guidance, comfort, or just company. And it killed Jack even more to know that he was just her best friend, and they would never be anything more. Because Paul had that place in her heart.
Alex sighed, looking at Jack and the pained look on his face. He hated seeing his best friend go through all of this over a girl. There was a time when Alex would've made fun of Jack, for reacting this way when there were so many other fish in the sea. But after meeting his own girlfriend, Sydney, his views on a lot of things had changed, and now, he pitied Jack.
"You know what Paul?" Hannah asked fiercely. Her tone was low but the crowd nearby surrounding of their friends could still hear. "I can't take this anymore. It's over."
Everyone's breath caught in their throat and Jack swore his heart skipped three beats. In all of their arguments, Hannah and Paul had never actually broken off the relationship. This was new. This was one step further.
The look on Paul's face was one of pure shock. His girlfriend had actually broken up with him.
Hannah stormed off in the opposite direction of Paul, toward the stage where Forever The Sickest Kids was currently playing.
Jack watched her leave, hope filling his heart. He knew he shouldn't get excited though. He and Hannah were friends, good friends, and nothing more.
"What the hell are you still standing here for?" Alex asked his friend.
Jack turned to him with a confused look on his face.
"Go after her," Bryan waved in his hand in the general direction where Hannah had last been.
Jack looked at Bryan even more confused. Was he honestly telling him to go after his friend's now ex-girlfriend.
"Go on," Bryan encouraged. "She and Paul were never right for each other. I've known that for awhile now. But you two are. And you'll never know for sure until you go after her."
Jack nodded, processing his words through.
"Go!" Martin gave him a gentle push, chuckling.
Jack smiled and jogged after Hannah. He found her on the side of the stage watching Forever The Sickest Kids.
"Hann," he said softly.
She turned at the sound of her name, her deep blue eyes meeting with his brown ones.
"Hey Jack," she smiled sadly.
"How are you holding up?" he asked, holding out his arms to give her a hug which she accepted. Hannah always loved Jack's hugs. There was nothing better in the world.
Her smile grew a little wider. "Actually, I'm pretty good. I think this had to be done. Right now, I feel......free. I think this is all for the best. And now that I can actually say it, my love for Paul has been platonic for awhile now. He's like my brother. I'm in love with someone else." Her eyes sparkled mischievously as she uttered the last sentence, making Jack's heart leap.
She turned back toward the stage allowing Jack to think over her words. Could she be referring to him? Was it arrogant to think it was him? What if he said something and it was wrong?
Deciding he could take it no longer, Jack spun her around and placed his lips to hers. "I love you," he murmured as they pulled away.
Hannah's smile was the happiest he'd ever seen it. "You better, because I love you too," she said and closed the gap between them once more.
