A Jacob Black Story

When The Clock Strikes Twelve :: The Fifth Hour

Mom, dad, Alice and I pushed open the door to my room, dumping the bags onto the floor. I grinned and sighed loudly. I turned to the parentals with a mock glare.

"This is why I shouldn't have to go to school! It costs so much," I said. Mom laughed and dad reached out, rubbing his hand against my hair.

"You of all people shouldn't be worrying about price, Lydia," Dad said. I glared at him, pouting before swatting his hand away. He and mom laughed again before turning and walking down the stairs. Alice was standing across the hall in her doorframe. She was smirking.

"School starts soon," she said. I groaned loudly and turned, stepping over the bags to get into my room. She laughed behind me and followed me into my room. I turned around and snatched Wolfie from the ground. I then plopped onto my bed. Alice looked down at my knee when she sat down next to me. "Let me see your knee," she said. I lifted my leg and draped it over her lap. I then leaned down to grab the remote from the floor. Turning on the T.V. I grinned when I found what was on.

"Van Hellsing is awesome," I stated. Alice looked up, poking my knee harshly. I hissed when she looked over. On the screen, Van Hellsing was transforming for the first time while fighting Count Vladislaus Dracula.

"You only like him because he's a werewolf," she said. I grinned and hugged Wolfie closer. Alice grinned also.

"'Why does it smell like wet dog in here?'" she quoted.

"'Werewolf!'" I laughed. Alice soon joined in. I looked over at the screen and watched as the battle between Van Hellsing and Dracula continued. I yelped when Alice poked my knee again. I looked over at her then to the large purple bruise lining the bottom of my knee cap.

"That looks horrible," she said. I glared at her and pulled my leg back before standing up. I stretched my arms over my head, my grip on Wolfie tightening. I then turned around to face Alice. She grinned cattishly, "School starts in three days," she said. I glared at her. She jumped up and hugged me, turning me around in her grip so that I was facing the bags on the floor. "You've got tomorrow, Saturday, and Sunday left before you go to school on Monday at 8:00 A.M," she said. I struggled in her grip before she let me go. I stumbled forward. I whirled around, nearly stumbling like some little anime girl.

"You're evil," I said. Alice cackled and walked past me to her room across the hall, "You're the evil incarnate!" I shouted after her, "Devil advocate!" I said. She turned around with a grin when I opened my mouth to say something.

"If you say 'Devil Child' who's the devil? Mom or dad?" she asked. I glared at her and threw Wolfie towards her door. She shut it quickly, and I heard the lock twist into place. Her laughter echoed in the hall as I walked over and pulled Wolfie close to me. I then backed up, pushing the bags further into my room so that I could shut my door. Once I did, I locked it also and turned around. I walked over the bags, shouting loudly when my foot slid through one of the plastic handles in the bags. I pulled it free and set Wolfie on the bed. I then proceeded to open the curtains. When I threw open the curtains at the end of my bed, my grip on them went slack for a moment. Standing at the edge of the woods was a figure. The dark clouds didn't allow the sun to shine through but gave slight light that reflected off the fresh snow on the ground. The figure walked forward slightly. My lips parted in awe.

The figure was a boy who didn't look any older than me, at most sixteen. His dark brown hair was tussled and fell down to his ears. Pale skin, nearly matching the snow around his feet, appeared to be marble. He wore a plain black sweatshirt, the hood on the back draped around his shoulders. Dark jeans were hanging down from his hips and were piled over the tops of black sneakers. What shocked me was the dazzling grin playing on his lips and the shocking red eyes that were set inside of his face. He looked like an angel. The sounds behind me were instantly gone. The boy whirled around quickly and the sounds came back. I continued to watch as multiple low growls started to echo through the air. Seven large wolves appeared at the edge of the trees. The air fled from my lungs and I stumbled backwards. I turned around and started for my door, unlocking it quickly and running down the stairs. Mom and dad were in the kitchen, reading and discussing something in the newspaper. They looked up when I ran past the door frame.

"Lydia?" I heard mom ask. I fumbled with the lock on the front door before finally opening it.

"I'll be right back!" I shouted over my shoulder. I ran out the door and stopped on the porch. The boy and the wolves were gone. My brow furrowed as I walked along the porch, not bothering to go down the stairs leading to the front door. I jumped off the porch when it ended at the end of the house. I then picked up my pace and jogged towards the edge of the woods. My mind was screaming at me that I was being an idiot. But when I looked around the dark shadows of the trees, there was nothing there. I stopped a few feet from the trees, looking into their shadowy depths in confusion. I looked down at the ground. Impressions from the boy's sneakers were inches from my toes. I stepped back and looked closer at the ground. Seven sets of impressions were there and around one of the paw prints was a black string. I picked it up. "My hoodie string," I mumbled.

"Lydia!" I jumped at my name, turning around to see Alice standing on the edge of the porch. Mom and dad were standing on the porch behind her. "Get inside, you're gonna get sick!" she shouted. I looked back into the woods again before running towards Alice. My fingers were wrapping the string around them, making sure that I didn't drop it. I looked back at mom and dad as Alice pulled me onto the porch.

"If I throw on a jacket and a pair of jeans really quick, can I go for a walk?" I asked. Mom looked over at dad. He just shrugged. She sighed and rubbed her hand over her face.

"I guess but come back when you want lunch," she said. I blinked in surprise as I followed them into the house.

"What time is it?" I asked her. Alice ducked into the living room as I shut the door behind me.

"Noon!" Alice shouted before she walked back into the hall. My jaw dropped as I turned towards my parents.

"What time did you wake me up!?" I asked. They laughed, causing me to pout. Alice rolled her eyes and walked up the stairs first. I ran behind her to follow her. Once we were on the second floor, I looked over at her. She looked back.

"What is it?" she asked. I tilted my head, trying to give her my best puppy dog look.

"Can you put together the stuff that I'm going to take on Monday?" I asked her. Alice gave me an odd look. I hurried into my room and pulled a pair of jeans from my closet. They were faded and I instantly need to take off the small shorts and skirt. Once they were on the floor and my jeans held up by a piano belt, I pulled out my black hoodie from my closet. I pulled it on and tied the string around my wrist. I then pulled my cell phone out of my bag and shoved it into my pocket. I undid my hair and tied it up into a messy bun.

"Why?" she asked. I slid past her and hurried down the stairs.

"Because I'm going to be out walking for a while," I said. Alice opened her mouth to say something else but I was already jumping down the porch steps and running around the house. My braces felt colder against my lips as I slowed to a stop in front of the woods. My heart was racing. I took a deep breath to try and calm myself. I chuckled as I thought of Van Hellsing still playing up in my room. "Who's afraid of the big bad wolf, huh?" I mumbled to myself. I slowly walked forward, looking down at the paw prints on the ground. "This had nothing on Van Hellsing," I said quietly. I looked down again to see that the paw prints were spaced far apart now. I picked up my pace until I broke out into a jog. The paw prints turned sharply. I slid across the snow until my side crashed into a tree. It knocked the wind out of me. I gasped heavily and slid down the tree slightly. My greedy intakes of air were making my head spin. "God dammit," I cursed. I pushed away from the tree, keeping my hand on it as everything spun around me. I shook my head and dropped my hand, deciding to follow the prints at a slow walk.

The paw prints led me through the forest for a while before breaking free near the edge of a cliff. I could see the island off in the distance. I looked around, walking away from the cliff edge for my own safety. The waves were thrashing below me, hitting the cliff side hard enough that I was surprised that the cliff didn't shake. The footprints were scattered everywhere, most leading off the cliff. I slowly walked towards it, looking down with a loud gulp. The waves were brutal, most likely smashing anything and everything against the cliff wall to create a blood pancake. I backed up before falling onto my knees to look over again. The height was making me dizzy. I gulped again, taking in slow breaths as I backed away from the cliff. I thought of the boy with the ruby red eyes. I instantly moved forward again to see if he was down there. I gave a slight hysterical laugh before backing up. I placed my forehead against the cold ground with a third gulp. The snow was seeping through my jeans and my knee was throbbing with pain. I pushed myself up, blowing my wet bangs from my face. "What kind of wolves were those?" I asked myself. My voice was barely above a whisper. I remembered the wolf from the night before and the wolf from the forest, the one that Alice hit with her Jeep. I rubbed my face and stood up.

"It's a little cold to be cliff diving, ain't it?" I jumped, my heart pounding loudly in my ears from surprise as I backed away from the cliff quickly. If I had any more surprises today, I was going to hit something. Or someone. I turned around with a sigh to find Embry standing close. The others were farther back with Quil talking to the boy from this morning. I looked up at the tall boy behind me.

"What is with you and popping up out of nowhere?" I asked seriously. He laughed and placed a hand on my shoulder. He then led me towards the group. I was annoyed by the action but what could I do? He was a foot taller than me and most likely 130 pounds heavier. Oh yeah, that would defiantly work. He could crush me if he really wanted to. I nearly rolled my eyes at the thought but stopped when I noticed that everyone, save for Leah, was only in a pair of cut off jeans. I looked up at Embry. No shirt, just the cut off jeans. I looked forward in confusion as a blush tinted me cheek. Quil looked over and laughed.

"You're gonna have to quit blushing when you see all of us like this," he said. I glared at him as my blush grew. Seth snickered.

"Yeah, you have to get use to being around hot guys like us," he said. He moved towards me and draped an arm over my shoulders, pushing Embry's hand off in the process. Embry glared and pushed the boy playfully. Seth growled lowly, playfully like the wolf from the beach. I looked over at him before Embry pulled me towards Quil and the boy.

"I almost forgot!" Embry exclaimed loudly. I winced and glared up at him, rubbing my ear. He grinned. "Lydia, this is our dear friend Jacob Black," he said. He motioned towards the boy standing next to Quil. I looked up at him with a light blush, smiling sheepishly. I looked down as if to hide my braces. Quil and Embry both laughed as the boy, Jacob, grinned.

"Don't worry about Lydia here," Quil said. He grabbed my arm and pulled me closer, nearly causing me to stumble forward into Jacob, "She's just shy," he said. I glared at him and pulled my arm free. I smiled again at Jacob.

"It's nice to meet you," I said quietly. Mechanically, I held my hand out, "I'm Lydia," I said, rolling my eyes. Jacob grabbed my hand with grin of his own.

"Jacob," he said.

"It's nothing! I would hurry, though," I motioned to Edward, "It looks like he wants to leave," I said. Bella nodded and turned. She then turned back to me.

"When you go back to school," I looked at her, "If you meet someone named Jacob Black... please tell him I said hi," she said. I nodded and she ran off to Edward.

I blinked and slowly pulled my hand free. Jacob gave me a confusing look. I looked down to the ground with a silent sigh, "Bella Swan... told me to tell you something," I said. Everything around us fell silent. Jacob tensed, his hands quickly curling into fists. "She told me to say 'hi'," I said. I looked up slowly as I noticed everyone looking at Jacob. His hair hung in his eyes. I stepped back nervously before feeling my pocket vibrate.

It's funny how a man only thinks about the [beep] You got a real big heart, but I'm looking at your [beep] You got real big brains, but I'm looking at your [beep] Girl, there ain't no pain in me looking at your [beep] I scrambled to pull out my phone, whose ring tone broke the tension between the group. Quil and Embry grinned as Jacob relaxed. Seth laughed loudly along with Paul. Sam shook his head, rolling his eyes while Leah glared at my back.

"Hello?" I asked as I stepped away from the group. Embry moved enough that I could brush past him and Jacob. I could feel the heat rolling off both of them. I shivered at the contrast in the temperature as I moved further away.

"Lydia. Mom and dad want you home, lunch is ready," Alice said. I sighed to myself, "Hurry up and get home or I'll eat your food," Alice said. I glared at the ground.

"You pig, I'm on my way," I said. I heard Alice start to protest as I ended the call. I shoved my phone back into my pocket before turning around. "I have to go but I'll see you guys later?" I asked. Jacob, Embry and Quil turned towards me.

"So soon?" Jacob asked. I smiled, my braces barely reflecting the light, as I nodded.

"Yeah," I said. I started to walk backwards, giving them a small wave, "It was nice meeting you Jacob," I said. He grinned as I turned around and started to walk off. I could feel eyes on me as the dull murmurs of Quil and Embry slowly disappeared behind me. There was one thing that I could hear, though, that made me think. It was something Jacob said before I was out of earshot.

"I've come to learn that those stupid fry containers are smaller than they look."

Finally!! ((Cass: Finally what??)) I met Jacob!! *jumps around* ((Cass: Of course, this is a Jacob Black story, right??)) *glares*
I opened the door to the house, feeling my mouth water as the smell of grill cheese sandwiches floated through the air. I closed the door behind me as I tried to rub the wet snow off my pants.

"I'm home!" I shouted through the house. I walked forward, removing my jacket and hanging it on a hook next to Alice's. I walked into the kitchen to find everyone sitting at the table. Alice was already eating a sandwich. I glared at her. Mom held out a plate for me, two halves of a sandwich sitting on it. I snatched it from her and plopped down into a chair next to Alice. Mom set a cold glass of milk in front of me. I glared at it. "I don't want milk," I mumbled. Alice looked over at me.

"You need it, Lydia. You might actually be taller than a fourth grader if you drink it," she said. I glared over at her.

"Shut up, Devil's advocate," I hissed. Mom and dad rolled their eyes as we started to argue. Mom took the glass of milk and gulped it down before placing two cold sodas in front of us.

"There, now quit arguing," she said. I looked up at her with a mischievous smile.

"Mom, is that another gray hair I see?" I asked. Alice nearly choked on her food, but laughed as mom glared at me.

"Only because you and Alice argue about your short height," she said. I gaped at her as she grinned and turned to place the glass at the sink. I lifted one half of the sandwich to my mouth and bit into it.

"You people are all evil," I mumbled around my food. Alice lashed out with her foot, kicking me harshly in the knee and adding a lovely bruise to match the one on my other leg. I swallowed the half chewed piece of sandwich and nearly choked. I took a gulp of my soda. "OW! Alice that hurt!" I shouted. Dad glared over at her as Alice looked down at her nearly empty plate with an innocent look. He sighed and shook his head. He looked over at the newspaper rolled up and slid against the wall of the table. He grabbed it again.

"It looks like we left Seattle just in time," he said. I looked up from my sandwich, popping the last piece into my mouth before starting on the second half. Alice stood up to help herself to another two sandwiches.

"You're hungry today, aren't you, Alice?" mom asked. Alice nodded and nearly inhaled a half of her second sandwich.

"Don't know why, I mean I had a big breakfast," she said. Mom nodded in agreement before turning to make a few more sandwiches. I looked over at them quickly before looking at dad.

"What do you mean?" I asked him. He folded the newspaper in half and pushed it towards me. I leaned forward to look at the large headline on the front page.

Seattle Suffers

After reading it, I pulled the paper closer to me to read the first few lines of the article. My sandwich, which was forgotten easily, was inhaled by Alice.

After barely recovering from the long string of murders only three months ago, Seattle is struck again. Fourteen murders in the past three days. They seem to be by the same murderer that sent Seattle into mayhem in the past. Police say-

I pushed the newspaper back to dad with a grimace. "So it's basically the same thing that happened when Ryan, Lacey and I were off camping with Lacey's family, huh? That big string of murders. What was it, like 40 murders in 3 months or something?" I asked. My dad took the paper back as mom sat down across from me. Alice looked up from her fifth sandwich after she sat down.

"That really big murder case? Its happening again?" Alice asked. My dad nodded. Mom looked over at Alice.

"Wasn't one of your friend's boyfriends killed in that string of murders?" she asked. Alice nodded and didn't say anything as she continued to eat. I looked to my plate, my stomach feeling like it was going to fall through my butt any moment. I stood up, picking up plate and carrying it to the sink. I turned and grabbed my soda quickly.

"I'm going to go upstairs and call it a day," I said. Alice nodded quietly as mom and dad quietly discussed the newspaper article. I ran up the stairs, pulling my phone out along the way. When I was in my room, I locked the door and set my soda on the desk. I quickly changed into a pair of black pajama pants, throwing my jeans and jacket onto the floor in front of my closet. I looked around to find the bags in the corner of my room, a new black and white backpack filled with new things. I sat down on my bed, choosing to watch the rerun of Van Hellsing while I dialed Lacey's number. She picked up during the first ring.

"Hey, Lydia! I thought you would have talked to me on Yahoo!" she said. I let out a breath I hadn't realized I was holding. I tucked my legs under me and pulled Wolfie into my lap. I sat against the wall.

"Is Ryan with you?" I asked. I switched over to speaker phone and set it on my knee.

"Yeah, he's here. Why?" Lacey asked. I looked at the screen blankly, watching as the vampires swooped over the small town at the beginning of the movie.

"Can you put the phone on speaker? I need to talk to both of you," I said. Lacey quickly switched it over, since I heard her T.V louder than before.

"What is it, Lydia? Did one of those boys try something with you!?" Ryan asked. I smiled, rolling my eyes.

"Have you guys seen the papers there?" I asked. I heard Lacey stand up before a door open. They were going to the kitchen of Lacey's one story home. I heard the paper shuffle.

"Lace, look at this," Ryan said quietly. The phone was put down.

"Didn't this happen not to long ago?" Lacey asked.

"That's what I said. It looks like that murderer didn't get enough from the last massacre he caused," I said. I hugged Wolfie closer to me.

"Hey, I'm going to call my brother, see if he and his girlfriend are okay, alright?" Lacey said.

"Alright, I'll talk to you later. Call me if you find out anything else before me, okay?" I said.

"Okay. Be careful, Lydia," Ryan said. I rolled my eyes.

"I should be telling you guys that," I said. I quickly said goodbye and hung up. I fell to the side with my head landing on the pillow. My knees were close to my chest as I held Wolfie tightly. What if the murderer got a hold of Lacey and Ryan? I shivered at the thought. I don't know what I would do if that happened.

((Cass: And so the plot thickens... *cackles and skips away*))
The snow was gone, leaving behind a wonderful green ocean of grass through the forest. I felt anything but wonderful at the time. I was running, nearly breathless but still continuing. I could hear the sounds of a fight growing closer. Sounds that could match an action scene of a horror movie echoed over La Push. I nearly tripped over a raised root, stumbling and slowing down. I quickly continued when I regained my balance. I could see the end of the forest coming closer, the sounds much louder now. Through the opening, I could see the familiar wolves growling viciously. I could hear Ryan's and Lacey's distant voices behind me as I pushed myself to go faster.

"Lydia! Dammit, stop!" I heard behind me. It was Lacey's brother, Kevin. I didn't even look back to acknowledge him. I stumbled over another raised root, breaking through the trees and onto the cliff top. The breathtaking boy from outside my window was standing on the edge of the cliff, his teeth bared. He was crouched much like a panther would before pouncing on its prey. A large russet wolf stood in front of it, growling low enough to make the ground shake. Wolves stood behind the large russet one, watching and waiting as if they were silently commanded to. I quickly counted them off in my head. Two were missing.

"Where are Alice and Sam?" I mumbled. As the words left my mouth, the boy snapped his head to look up at me. He shifted to jump forward towards me. When he did, the russet wolf launched forward. Both were sent forward over the edge of the cliff. My breath hitched. "No..." My breath left me as I started to move forward. Three pairs of arms wrapped around me to hold me in place. Lacey moved to stand in front of me, hugging me tightly. She kept me in place as the wolf disappeared out of sight. My voice seemed disconnected to where I didn't even think I had screamed. "JAKE!"

Woah... what happened??? ((Cass: I can't tell you~~ But I can say to go to the results!! ^-^))

Friday. Saturday. Sunday. Each day past by like a blur. I didn't even know what day it was when Alice came bouncing into my room with a large grin on her face. She jumped onto my bed, shaking me awake.

"LYDIA!!" she shouted. I rolled over, pulling the pillow onto my head to block out her voice. "GET UP!! It's time for school!" Alice exclaimed. I froze, and she noticed for she started to cackle.

"No!!" I moaned loudly. I pulled the pillow off my head and pushed myself up to look at her. She was grinning. "Are you serious!?" I asked. Alice nodded energetically. "What happened to the last three days!?" I asked.

"You've been moping around the beach with those tall friends of yours," she said. I thought back over the days she was talking about. Most of the memories were with Jacob, Quil and Embry on the beach, talking about how school would be and what I should expect. I groaned and plopped back down onto the bed.

"I'm sick!" I claimed, giving a fake cough. Alice laughed and threw the blankets off of me and onto the floor.

"Liar! You're going to school!" Alice exclaimed, "And I'm driving you!" she added. I looked up at her, pushing myself into a sitting position.

"That's just great. Drive me in your crushed car," I said. Alice glared at me and pulled me up. I dragged my feet as she stopped me in front of my closet.

"Pick out your clothes, Lydia, you're going to be late!" she stated. I growled lowly in annoyance as Alice danced out of the room and shut my door. I leaned against my closet door frame and lightly hit my head against the wall. School. This is just perfect. I sighed lowly and pushed myself away from the frame to pick out my clothes. My first day of torture was going to start in an hour. Perfect.
