Ginamarie glanced up over the top of her black rimmed glasses, away from her thick textbook to see what Lola was doing.
Her friend Lola, sitting across from her, was doing the same thing.
"What are you looking at?" they asked each other in unison very suggestively, and then laughed.
"Just admiring your hot looks," joked Lola.
"Are you a parking ticket? Because dang girl, you got fine written all over you," replied Ginamarie.
"Is this a bad time?" interrupted a voice. The two girls looked up to see two boys, slightly shocked, staring them down.
The girls looked back at each other and laughed hysterically, causing quite a few amounts of heads to turn in the cafeteria.
"I think so," pondered the other boy.
They both turned to walk away, when the girls cried out, "Come back!"
Laughing, they turned back and sat down at their table. "Hey Ginamarie, hey L-l-l-lola," greeted Pete.
"Why must you always call me L-l-l-lola?" she questioned the boy beside her.
"Because it's c-c-c-catchy."
"So were you guys practicing pick-up lines for-" Andy paused to brush off the sleeves of his shirt as though there was lint- "us?"
Pete took out a spray and sprayed his mouth suggestively. "Damn, I love this sour candy spray," he commented happily and spritzed some more into his mouth.
"Hey, I want some!" pestered Lola. She held out her hand for it, but Pete pulled it away.
"N-n-no!"
"Come on!" she reached over to get it, but then he stood up and held it up with his arm, taunting her height, although he wasn't that tall himself.
"Can't reach it! Can't reach it!"
"Give it to me or else I'll hurt you!" she threatened.
Pete laughed evilly. "You and what army?"
"Me and my foot against your shin!" she announced, and then kicked up.
Pete bit his lip and mumbled the foulest profanity his mind could come up with. Then Lola stole the candy spray from his hand and squirted it inside her mouth happily.
Andy and Ginamarie were laughing insanely at the show put on for them. Not only that, but they were sitting closer, and closer, and closer...
"So," began Lola, pretending not to notice. "Guess what day it is tomorrow Andy!"
"Hmm," he said, stroking his chin. "Tuesday?"
"Yeah, but what else?" she said eagerly.
"The 15th of January?"
"Yeah, but what else?"
"I really don't know," he said, giving up.
Lola rolled her eyes and spritzed some more candy onto her tongue. Ginamarie looked out the window nervously at a bird hopping along in the snow.
"Ow, dang L-l-l-lola, was that necessary?"
"Poor Pete," commented Andy, although he did not sound sympathetic at all. "Would you like Lola to kiss it all better?"
Pete reddened slightly, but replied defiantly, "No, that won't be necessary, although if I were her, I'd start running because Pete's leg is feeling better, and he's sure as hell ready to teach her a lesson."
Lola's eye's widened. "Gotta run!" She hopped onto the table, jumped over and ran through the caf. Pete ran right after her, with a smug smile on his face as he jumped over garbage and recycling bins.
"Man, those kids are hyper!" Andy laughed. "It's the candy."
"Yeah, it's probably mixed in with some sort of drug," added Ginamarie. "Crack?"
"We prefer the term cocaine," corrected Andy, pushing up his glasses. The two of them laughed, and were silent for a moment, staring at each other nervously and occasionally, since Ginamarie tried to focus her attention back on the textbook.
"Got a test today?"
"Yeah. I mean, who doesn't love history?" she said sarcastically.
Andy found himself fumbling out his CD player, and slipped one earplug into her hand and one into his ear. For the rest of the lunch period, Misery Signals rocked their ears and history bored their eyes to tears. Nearly to tears.
After school, Ginamarie and Lola chatted on the phone as soon as they got home. Indeed, Lola was not lying when she said Tuesday was a special day.
It was their birthday.
"I'm so excited!" squealed Lola over the phone.
"It's your sweet sixteen!"
"I know!" Lola cleared her throat. "You are sixteen, going on seventeen!"
"I know!"
More excited chatter.
"Do you think Andy will remember to wish you a happy birthday?" teased Lola.
"Do you think Pete will remember to wish you a happy birthday?" Ginamarie teased back.
"Of course! I only reminded him about nine times in the last hour that it was our birthday tomorrow."
Ginamarie rolled her eyes. She should have reminded Andy also!
"Of course I didn't remind Andy... I think either Pete will do that, or you will."
"Why does it matter whether he remembers?"
"Psha. GM, don't lie, you two totally like each other." Lola jingled her house keys as she lay on her back in her bed.
"No we don't." Ginamarie twirled the cord on her phone with her index finger.
"Stop twirling that cord and listen to me-"
Dang, that girl knows me too well, she thought in her head.
"You so want him to remember, but you don't want to look too eager."
"Get out of my head!" she burst out. Then her face reddened.
"HA! I knew it! I knew it!"
"Shut up Lola."
"I knew it! You guys are in love!"
"Lola..."
"The way you're always so quiet around him... You turn into a whole new person! And the way he looks at you... And the way you look at him..."
"Shut up Lola, since the world knows that you and Pete have something going on," she retorted.
"What makes you think that?"
"Oh come on Lola! You two chase after each other all the time and tease each other and argue like an old married couple. Then next thing you know, the two of you are flirting your heads off."
"So who wants cake?" Lola piped up anxiously.
"I do, but you better lay off of it or the sugar might cause you to jump right on Pete!"
The girls gasped in unison.
"You did not just go there Ginamarie Helene!"
"I think I just did!" The girls did their little snaps on their own side of each line.
"Haha, well, my mom's calling me for dinner. I'll see you tomorrow. Dress for success in a sexy little dress for Andy!" and with that Lola hung up.
"She just had to have the last say," laughed Ginamarie to herself. She got up, opened up her closet and took out the gothic looking dress torn in all the right places that she had. There was never an occasion to wear it, and would it be a bit much to wear it?
Later on, after dinner, Lola was in her room laying out a skirt, complete with leggings and a shirt that looked like it had two layers, with the first layer torn ferociously.
The phone rang, and she went over to pick it up. "This is Lola, how may I assist you?"
"Don't laugh at me when I ask you," begged Ginamarie.
"Fine, I won't. My fingers are crossed."
GM rolled her eyes. "Mmmkay. What should I wear tomorrow?"
"That sex-"
"Other than that."
"Oh. Umm, well..."
"LOLA!"
"KK, fine. I'm wearing that skirt the leggings and the torn shirt. Do you wanna match?"
Ginamarie paused in thought. "Random outfit much?"
"Shut up. And I'm gonna paint my nails 10 different colours."
"Wow. Umm, Lola, do we need to call in a doctor?"
"Wow, umm, GM, you're the one asking for fashion advice from a fashion reject!"
"OK then. I think I better go." The two said their goodbyes and hung up.
Ginamarie looked at her dresser and decided to take a chance.
The next morning arrived, and the two girls were each a year older.
Lola got up nice and early to get ready, and sprinted over to GM's house to pick her up.
With some beads clipped onto her hair, blue bangles on her wrist, bright yellow converses with animals on them, a skirt with black leggings and her blue shirt, blue eye shadow and a huge smile on her face, she was quite the sight. Eagerly, she pressed the doorbell and waited for GM to open up.
"HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!" they both screeched at each other, engulfing each other in hugs.
"LOOK AT YOU!!!" they continued. Lola spun around for Ginamarie, and Ginamarie did a pose for Lola.
Ginamarie did indeed wear the sexy black dress. She looked very chic and sophisticated, but not too dressy. She had her black rimmed glasses on, as per usual, with some beautiful intricately made black beaded lace jewellery, and some laced boots.
"This is great! We're going to have a fine birthday, even though it's a Tuesday, we can still party it down!"
"Lola, what did you have this morning?"
"Drugs!" she joked back. "Why?"
"Because you're totally scaring me." The two of them laughed happily as Lola ventured into the house.
"My mom's still sleeping, so hush," warned Ginamarie.
"OK," whispered Lola. "But I have your present!"
GM did her best to clap as softly as possible as Lola reached into her backpack for a small package.
"Thank you!"
"No problem!"
"Your present's on the kitchen table!"
Lola raced in to retrieve her gift. Sounds of ripping packages could be heard through the household. Lola ran back to meet GM and the two squealed at their presents.
"That's what I got you!" they chorused, laughing. Both packages revealed a dangling fairy necklace, a reminder of what it was like to still be five.
"Thank you!" They both hugged one another.
After some last minute preparations, they were on their way to school. Of course, they looked quite the rage with their attire and over hyper-activeness.
At the front of the school, who but to spot them but those very special boys?
"HAPPY BIRTHDAY LOLA!" screamed Pete as he came and swooshed her up into a great big hug.
After he put her down, both of their faces glowed a bright red. "Thanks," she smiled nervously. She took a deep breath and swallowed her sudden shyness. "Where's my present?"
"Oh crap!" gasped Pete.
"You didn't get me a present?" she hollered. Then she whacked him repeatedly with her hands, slapping his arm. He couldn't have possibly felt it beneath his winter jacket.
"Ummm..." he held her close and kissed her. Afterwards, as if he was afraid that she would scream rape, he stopped and kind of shook on the spot.
"You... He..." She turned to look at Ginamarie and Andy who were, in a way, not surprised, but still kind of shocked.
"Oh my Gosh," muttered Pete. "I hope I did not just screw things up between us."
Lola smiled slyly at him, leaned forward and kissed him. Like a chain reaction, they kissed back and forth, and were soon embracing.
"Well, I'm kinda scarred for life," Andy said, turning his back on them.
"Me too," agreed Ginamarie, turning her back on them as well.
"Happy birthday!" Andy said happily and hugged Ginamarie. Quickly, he let go, as if he was afraid that GM would be afraid of his touch.
"Thanks," GM replied, and pushed up her glasses nervously. "So, what's up?"
"Nothing much. A bit excited for your birthday. Doing anything special?"
"Not really. Me and Lola were going to just hang out..." GM took a deep breath. "Want to join us?"
"Sure!" Andy replied a bit too enthusiastically. "I mean, that'd be fun. As long as we don't leave those two in a locked closet somewhere. I'm too afraid of being a potential 'uncle'."
Ginamarie laughed insanely. Her laughter was contagious to Andy. Pretty soon, the two of them were laughing for no reason.
"What's so funny?" came Pete's voice.
Lola laughed.
"Why are you laughing Lola?"
Lola shook her head and just laughed. Pete laughed at her laughing.
After about five minutes, they all took a deep breath, and finally stopped laughing.
"Shall we go in?" asked Andy, offering his arm to GM.
"OK!" And she linked arms with him quickly. Just a bit too quickly. They look at each other in the eyes and then gushed.
"Kids these days," Pete shook his head.
"I agree." Lola and Pete skipped off down the halls, leaving the two of them alone.
"I'll walk you to your locker," said Andy, directing the way. The two chatted along the way, and soon arrived in front of GM's locker. She slipped off her long coat, revealing her outfit.
"So today, I'm hoping that the servery might have some cupcakes.. After this morning, that early piece of cake my mom gave us, I've been craving more. I hate how addicting these things are. Don't you?"
There was no reply.
GM continued putting her things away and grabbing the correct books. "Andy, are you listening?"
"You look so beautiful." She turned her head to see Andy gawking at her like the awkward teenager he was.
"Well, uhh, thanks?" Ginamarie couldn't help but be super shy about his compliment. "I know, I finally look good today," she joked.
"You look good everyday," he said seriously. "But super amazing today."
GM tried to swallow his strange behaviour, and brush it off. "So, what's up?"
"I have a problem. Well, my friend has a problem."
"OK. I'm serious. What is it? Can I help?"
"Why don't we walk and talk to my locker?" suggested Andy, offering up his arm again.
GM nodded in agreement and the two were off.
"See, my friend really likes this girl. And he got her this gift he wanted to use to show his affection to her. But then he got wimped out. Later, he tried again, but then again he wimped out. All these times added up. He's afraid he won't get the chance to tell her if he doesn't do it quickly. She's so great, he's afraid he won't like her, or that someone will steal her off first. So..."
They arrived at his locker and he opened the door. Inside was lined with gift bags and boxes and cards and envelopes.
"So he decided to offer them all up to her at once, and show her how many times he's been a coward, and how he's willing to give her everything."
Ginamarie's heart raced. She tried not to laugh... She tried not to cry... Heck, she tried to not let her emotions get the best of her.
"Andy... I think you should tell your friend not to be afraid. Because that girl just might feel the same way about him." GM bit her lip and stared at her black polished shoes.
Andy took his hand and tilted her head up. With his other hand, and took hers. "Are you sure?"
"I'm positive."
"Oh that's great! In case you didn't figure out already, I'm my friend," Andy chuckled.
Ginamarie laughed. "No, really? Oh my Gosh! I never knew! Who's the girl?"
"The Easter Bunny."
"Aww shucks, then I don't think he's got a chance!"
"Really?"
"I'm positive. Tell your friend to give up while he can."
"I don't think he can, because he's in love."
"Are you sure?"
"I'm positive." Then he leaned forward and kissed her.
"Yeah! And that's not awkward at all!" shouted Lola's voice suddenly.
"I'm scarred for life!" came Pete's voice.
The two broke apart and Andy said, "Think it's time we taught those two a lesson?"
"For sure yeah. And we're not showing any mercy."
Andy slammed his locker door shut. He whispered, "I'll drop off your gifts after school."
"No rush, as long as you are with me." Andy kissed her on the cheek, and then the two stared down Lola and Pete, who then scrambled as fast as they could for the other end of the hall.
Holding hands, they chased after their friends.
