"Why is it in all these stories it is always two girls that get with two brothers?" Julia Shelton asked as she tucked a stand of her silky black hair behind her ear. She readjusted her reading glasses, as she looked up at Annie Harmon, her best friend. Annie's bright green eyes glittered with laughter at the question. Julia rolled milky brown eyes and smiled. She shut her book and tossed it onto the nightstand. She pulled her fluffy white comforter up more and buried under it. Annie sat up and tossed her notebook on the nightstand on top of the book. She grabbed the pillow she was laying on while she wrote and dropped it beside Julia as she flopped back down on top of it. Julia perked her brow and looked at Annie suspiciously. Julia stuck her tongue out and made her eyes big. It caused them both to burst into a fit of giggles.
"No need to be sour about it. It's just a story. It's not as if that stuff actually happens. Honestly, how many people do you know meet their sweetheart through a murder trial?" Annie answered as she propped her head up on her hand and looked at Julia. Julia nodded and twisted her mouth to the right as she thought. Annie poked her arm and smiled.
"I know what will make you feel better about that dumb story," Annie grinned as she sat up and tucked her feet under her backside as she did so.
"What?" Julia asked sitting up and scooting back against the mahogany headboard. The cover fell to reveal her faded Aerosmith band tee.
"Jules, I say we go on a ghost hunt," Annie stated as she crawled off the bed and pulled her pink Joe Boxers out of her butt.
"I'll grab the salt and the book if you grab the camera," Julia laughed lightly as she jumped out of bed and straightened her own black boxers.
"Will do. I don't think we can ghost hunt in these clothes in this weather. I'm heading to my room to change," Annie answered as she grabbed her notebook and scurried out of the room quickly. Julia laughed took her glasses off, placed them on the nightstand, and grabbed a pair of blue jeans from her closet. She yanked her boxers off and pulled the blue jeans on.
Meanwhile, Annie dashed into her pale green room and grabbed her jeans from the top of her clean laundry basket. She slipped into her jeans and looked around the room for the camera. After several minutes of opening drawers and looking through the closet, she found it under her light blue zip-up hooded sweatshirt. She snatched her khaki bag from beside her computer chair and put the camera inside it. She slid her sweatshirt on and zipped it up before following that with her socks and sneakers. She made sure her cell phone and laptop were already in the bag before going back to Julia's room. Julia was placing her book in her tattered denim bag as Annie walked in.
"Why do I have the book if I can't speak a lick of Latin?" Julia asked with a light laugh. Annie's brow furrowed and her nose wrinkled as she thought about it.
"Good question. You always slept in Latin," Annie stated as she straightened up and tossed Julia her leather jacket. Julia followed Annie out of the room with her bag, glasses, and jacket in hand.
"I've got an even better question for you. Why do you wear an old jacket, band tees, and listen to classic rock while driving a cherry red 93 Celica?" Annie asked as she walked into the kitchen, threw the salt into Julia's outstretched hands, and went out the back door. Julia tucked the salt into her bag, put her glasses on, pulled her jacket on, straightened her hair out of it, and went out the door with her.
"Why must you give me crap about my car? It gets us where we need to go," Julia smiled as she nudged Annie as they walked. Annie shrugged and smiled back as they headed down the road towards the cemetery. Julia pulled her hair up into a messy bun and looked up at the stars and moonlight.
"Always staring at the stars. Do you think there are aliens?" Annie asked as they walked down the gravel road towards the familiar cemetery with the crumbled tombstones and the shadows that lurked behind each.
"I believe that it's too narrow minded to believe that we're the only intelligent beings here. I mean, if there are ghosts and demons and things that go bump in the night, then why is it a stretch to have aliens?" Julia answered as they pushed open the creaky iron bars and stepped into Barker's Cemetery.
"Touch," Annie answered as she did a goofy bow in Julia's direction and headed over to their normal resting place. Julia laughed and hurried to race Annie to their spot. They skidded to a stop at the tombstone that marked Kellie Shelton's grave. Julia bowed her head in a moment of respect for her oldest ancestor in the cemetery. It was the only place in the whole cemetery that she felt truly safe for Kellie started the trail of the Shelton clan that laid to rest on that side of Barker Cemetery. She pulled her shirt down a bit as she curled her legs and sat beside the grave. She placed her bag on her lap and handed the salt to Annie. Annie started to pour a large circle around Julia and the spot where she would be sitting. She stepped into the circle, plopped down, and handed the salt back to Julia.
"How's good old Kellie Shelton doing today?" Annie asked with a big grin as Julia set the salt beside her and handed Annie the book.
"I wish you wouldn't do that. How would you like for someone to disturb you after two hundred years of sleep with a question like that?" Julia asked as she looked at Kellie's tombstone and wiped the dirt from it lightly.
"I'd like the company. Besides, we're the only ones that come around this place anymore. Everyone else is afraid of it," Annie stated as she pulled her video camera out, flipped it on, turned the night vision on, and pointed it at Julia.
"They have good reason to be, and I'll tell you why. Many people believe that cemeteries are holy ground, but that's not always the case. For murderers, grave robbing, and trickery is always afoot at a place like this," Julia said dramatically and winked at the camera at the end of her speech. They both began to giggle and stood up, leaving the rest of their things on the ground.
"How many spirits do you think we've caught on camera?" Annie asked as she looked around the cemetery.
"How many are here? Not counting my family," Julia warned as she laid her head on Annie's shoulder and looked at the camera window with her.
"I don't know. It's a pretty big cemetery if you think about it." Annie looked away from the camera to pull her hood on since the wind had blown to ruffle a bit of leaves.
"Did you see that?" Julia whispered hurriedly to Annie.
"See what?" Annie answered, looking back at the camera. Julia sighed and quickly grabbed the camera to rewind it back. She paused it on an exact spot where two heads could be seen peeking out from behind one of the large tombs that stood at the far side of the cemetery. One of the heads had distinctive features like full lips and a slightly pointed nose while the other had a rounder face with a bit of a larger nose, not like the owner was a fat guy but physically fit.
"I've never seen spirits that look like that," Julia whispered again as she looked at the camera then back to the actual tomb where the two heads had appeared.
"Neither have I," Annie stated as she made a gun shape with her hand in her sweatshirt pocket and pointed it in the direction of the tomb. "Come out with your hands up or I'll shoot!"
"Yeah! She'll do it too! She's not one to mess with!" Julia yelled at the tomb, but made sure to step back a bit behind Annie. Annie looked at Julia and tried not to laugh at her action. They stayed quiet for a second and nothing happened.
"Maybe they're spirits that we haven't dealt with before," Annie said dropping her hand but keeping it in her pocket. Julia twisted her mouth to the right as she began to think about it and stared at the camera. The images in the camera just didn't look like a spirit to her. If they're that clear, then what are they there for? An omen? Why is there two for that? Annie nudged Julia, and Julia was pulled from her thoughts. Julia handed the camera back to Annie and sighed at the questions that had unfolded.
"They don't seem to be trying to harm us. They're pretty secretive as well. Maybe their children," Annie suggested, pointing the camera at the tomb but starting to drag it back around the cemetery.
"No. They weren't children. Their features were too well-developed to be children," Julia mentioned to her as she knelt down to pull Annie's laptop out. She opened it, pulled the Word pad up, and typed a quick note to herself about the questions on her mind and the occurrence. Her back was to Annie and she was facing the direction of the tomb. She heard a twig crack and she looked up quickly. Again, she could see nothing, but her gut was churning with suspicion. She closed the laptop and placed it back in Annie's bag before grabbing the salt and stepping out of the circle. She was quiet with her actions and made sure not to alert Annie to her movement. She was starting to hear something the closer she got to one of the tombstones. They were whispers, very faint whispers. Military commands? Tactics? Whatever it was, she was sure it was directed at Annie and herself. She leaned against the tombstone slightly, hoping to hear more but the moment she went down on her knee was the moment something sprang up and pointed an old looking sawed off shotgun at her. She jumped up as well and pointed the container of salt at it.
"Get back or I'll salt you!" Julia yelled, which alerted Annie to her absence. Annie quickly pointed the camera in the direction of Julia and the figure. She kept the camera steady on the situation but bent down to grab her cell to call the police if necessary.
"Whoa. Calm down. Nobody salt or shoot anyone," The other figure said appearing from two tombstones over. Julia's breathing was heavy but she took in both the figures. Both were males and appeared to be in their mid or late twenties. The one pointing the gun at her was a bit taller then she was and had dirty blonde hair with the full lips and pointed nose. It appeared to be wearing a pair of jeans and a red button-up over a dark shirt with a brown leather jacket. The other was taller then the other with brown shaggy hair and the full face. He wore a brown jacket that hid his body and a pair of blue jeans.
"What are you?" Julia asked, threatening to toss the salt on the one pointing the gun at her.
"A man. What the hell do you think you're going to do to me with salt?" The figure asked, putting his gun down obviously not taking her as a threat. He looked her over and had to smirk slightly. Julia rolled her eyes, pushed the cap back down on the salt, and chucked the container at the figure anyway. "What the hell?" He yelled as he got hit square in the chest with it. The container landed on the ground; he bent down to pick it up.
"Have enough courtesy to find out my name before checking me out," Julia replied as she motioned for Annie to come over. The other guy chuckled softly and stepped forward cautiously.
"Excuse my brother. I'm-"
"Mike and I'm Ike," The first guy said handing Julia the container of salt.
"Mike & Ike? Nice try. Real names or Annie will shoot you," Julie stated as Annie pointed her gun at them again.
"With what? Her hand? If something really attacked you two, then you'd be in a lot of trouble," The first guy said as ran a hand over the nape of his neck.
"We can fight. We only do that if we have to though," Julia said as she strummed her fingers on the salt container to the beat of Renegade by Styx. The first guy smirked and listened closely to the beat.
"Good taste in music, can fight, and hangs out in a cemetery? Doesn't sound like your girl next door type," The first guy said looking at Julia. She was starting to like that smirk no matter how annoyingly arrogant and cocky it was. The boys would've kidnapped Annie and Julia if they were really a threat, so Julia started to figure it was safe enough to turn on the charm.
"I never said that I was. Shouldn't assume things from a girl who tries to kill you with salt," Julia winked at the first guy and his smirk deepened as he looked at his brother then back to her.
"Who are you? And why are you two in a graveyard at this time of night?" Annie asked not falling for any good looks or sweet guy acts that we being played. She looked to the tall guy first for answers since he was the only one that seemed to be answering them correctly. The tall one tried to look at his brother for help but he was shamelessly flirting with Julia from three feet away. Worst of all, it wasn't with words. His brother always could speak for days with his eyes, especially with women. The tall one sighed and rubbed his forehead really not wanting to lie to the woman standing in front of him, still holding the gun up.
"If you put the gun down and put the video camera away, then I'll tell you exactly who we are and why we are here. You won't believe me when I tell you though," He said slipping his hands into his pockets. Annie looked down at her hand that was still safely up like she could really fire bullets out of it. She laughed lightly and pulled her hand out of her pocket to reach up and turn the video camera off.
"I'm Annie and that's Julia, by the way," Annie said before the tall one could start answering questions. She figured it would be pretty rude to demand a ton out of them, since her and Julia were lurking around a graveyard too. Annie looked at Julia to make sure her giving their names away was all right, but Julia was no help. Julia and the other guy had moved closer to each other and were exchanging compliments like they were going out of style. Annie rolled her eyes and snapped her fingers at Julia, trying to pull her back to the real world where boys that hang out in graveyards mean trouble. Julia turned her attention to Annie and nodded before taking a step back from the guy.
"My name's Sam and that's my brother Dean," Sam said with a smile since Annie had started to warm up to him slightly. "We're on a hunt."
