Chapter 11-just crawl across this desert heat and become tragic with me
*Frank's POV*
I have come to a conclusion. It doesn't matter if you're the most intellectual guy in the whole world, guys will never understand girls. I don't even think girls understand girls. Take the Nestor twins for instance. I thought Autumn was a really sweet girl that just needed to come out of her shell. Turns out her shell was hiding a whore with no conscience, who knew? Her sister Jamia had appeared to really enjoy the date I took her on, and yet she had been avoiding me ever since. Girls; can't live with them, can't have a population without them.
Maybe I should rethink this whole races thing. I had told Jamia I would come watch her race, but now I wasn't sure if I should.
As third block's warning bell went, I grabbed my history book and hurried to class. Oh great, I have Autumn in this class. Ever since I told her off she's been keeping her distance though.
I slipped into my seat as the final bell rang. Safe again. As Mr.Muir started rambling off about World War II I felt a wad of paper hit me in the back of the head. I ignored it. Being pelted with various balls of refuse was nothing new to me. I was just glad that today they weren't of the spit variety.
I finally turned around to see Autumn gloating at me. I wrote "you won, Jamia hates me, happy now?" on a sheet of my notebook, tore it off, and handed it back to her. She pulled out her green gel pen and wrote a reply in her neat cursive.
"Oh she always hated you," was her smug reply. "she just got sick of me that's all." No small wonder there, I thought to myself. But still I was confused, what did Autumn mean that Jamia had 'always hated me'? I thought she said that Jamia had a crush on me?
Autumn observed my confused expression and rolled her eyes. She pulled out a fresh piece of paper from her Hello Kitty notebook. When she handed it up to bme, the reply was lengthly.
"You are so slow Iero," it reads in sparkly green. "I was using my sister to get revenge on you. I told her you broke my heart, and she vowed to get you back. Said she was going to get you to fall in love with her and then she would break your heart. Unfortuneately thanks to your guys' little date, she now knows the truth. That's why she won't talk to you, she's embarassed as hell. Btw my #'s at the bottom if you want to give it another-" I crumbled up the paper and threw it back at her head.
Unfortunately Mr. Muir saw this happen. "Mr.Iero, that will be 30 minutes after school."
"But I can't, I have to catch the bus to my Dad's!" I protested.
"I don't care," said Mr.Muir. "Don't do the crime if you can't do the time."
I groaned and slumped my head down onto my desk. Yet again Autumn Nestor had managed to screw up my life. But could what she had said about Jamia be true? Was she really only using me to avenge her sister? I knew better than to trust the viper's forked tongue, I would have to ask Jamia about it at the races tonight. Not like I have anywhere else to go now that I'll miss the bus to Dad's. I just really hope that what Autumn said about Jamia isn't true. It can't be.
The rest of the day goes by in a dreary sludge. Even Music isn't enough to lift my spirits, seeing how I knew I would have to go to detention right after.
I pulled out Return of the King and reread it during detention. I had read this book so many times that I knew where everything was. I turned to the part where Smeagol gets Frodo to banish Sam. I could really relate with how betrayed Sam felt, walking down that steep, slippery stairwell all by himself.
After detention I hitchhiked out to Exit 89, where I knew the races were always held. It was over a waterway and there was hardly ever any traffic-that's saying something in Jersey! I suppose most folks know that the street races went on and didn't have the heart to call the cops.
I saw Jamia's bike lined up to pit against a yellow Kowasaki. Before the driver put down his visor I recognized her opponent as Martin Nave. This should be a close match. Ian Gallant stood between them with a megaphone.
"Okay, yous all know the rules," he said. "You do a track til the turnpike and then y'all turn back. First one back across the bridge wins. That all clear y'two?" Both drivers gave a thumbs up. "Okay then. Step back and let these two go at it. I said back up people!" The last few stragglers cleared the track as Jamia and Martin throttled their engines. Oh how I loved that sound...
"On the count of three you drive like the bats out of hell we all know you are," instructed Ian. "On a one, two , THREE!" Ian dropped his arm and they were off. I had never seen two bikes move so fast. Then again, I had never been to a street race before.
Jamia was a little behind I thought, but it was very close. They pulled a death quick turn at the turnpike and started barreling back towards us. It was exhilarating to watch to say the least. Now they only had the bridge left and Jamia had managed to pull ahead. She was too close to the railing though, she better turn before it's too late... Jamia notices her mistake and shifts her bike to the right. No, she's shifted too far! The over correction causes the bike to get out of her control. Martin notices this and speeds up so she won't run into him. However, that is the least of Jamia's worries right now.
I watch in horror and it seems like everything is happening in slow motion. Jamia's bike swerves to the left as she tries to fix her correction. The first tire skids too far to the left and runs into the stone walkway. The rest of the bike slowly rises off the pavement from behind. Jamia's helmet cracks itself off the barrier. The bike and rider Jamia flip over the side. It seems like forever before the splash is heard below. It's a small sound, barely audible, but to me it sounds deafening. Deathening.
I run as fast as my short legs can carry me to the place where the bike flipped over. "Jamia!" I screamed. I saw her torn frame floating down river. "Someone call an ambulance!" I cried. I turned around to see nobody there but Martin.
"I'm sorry dude, you can't bring the authorities to a race," said Martin apologetically.
"She's going to die if we don't save her!" I screamed. "You're supposed to be her friend! Call 911 or so help me I'll kill you myself!"
Martin thought about it for a moment before reluctantly pulling out his cellphone. "Yeah, I'm calling to report a motorcyle wreck on Exit 89..." that's all I needed to hear. I kicked off my shoes and my coat. Jamia was already on the other side of the bridge. I hadn't been swimming since I was eight and that water had to be at least 20 feet down... None of that mattered now. I had to save her.
I took a deep breath, said a quick prayer, and jumped. I screamed all the way down, only to be silenced as the icy knives of water slammed into me like a transport truck. After I figured out which direction was up I swam for the surface. My lungs were burning and I couldn't feel my legs as they kicked frantically for the surface. None of that mattered, I had to find Jamia.
I broke through the surface and gasped for air. I frantically cleared the muddy water from my eyes, searching for Jamia's wreck. She was about 15 feet downstream from me. With everything I had in me, I swam for her. I couldn't let her down, I had to save her. I reached her only to find her face down with a sickly trail of blood making the water murky around her. Luckily her helmet was still on, so she had air. I pulled her head up and tore off the very thing that had ensured her survival so far. Her face appeared to be clear of cuts. She was knocked out cold though, and her face a ghostly white.
With the last bit of my diminishing strength I managed to reach the shore with Jamia. I rolled onto my back breathing heavily. I could hear the far off siren's call. I looked over to Jamia. She was covered in blood and the mood of the creekbed. But still so beautiful. Her shallow breathing ensured that she was still alive, if barely.
I watched in a daze as the ambulance parked on the bridge. "We're over here!" I croaked out. "Help, we're over here!" I managed to raise my arms once before having them fall back to my sides, completely useless. "We're over here..."
I wrapped my arms around Jamia in a desperate atttempt to keep her warm. Her shallow breathing the only sign that she was still alive, but it was a sign all the same. I watched as the red and white lights danced upon her face. Her beautiful, inanely pale face.
"Sir, it's okay, we're here now," the paramedic called off from a seemingly far distance. "We're going to take good care of her."
"You better," I said, squinting to read the nametage inches from my face. "You better Carl, or I'll..." I didn't have time to finishh my threat before I was out. The last thing I saw was Jamia being loaded onto the back of the ambulance before the darkness envelopes me in it's loving arms.
I just realized that I have frank save people from drowning alot (lyrics in results)
Saves the day-sound the alarm
I don't know where to go
Ain't no light to light my road
stumbling under the stars above
Somehow feel someone's stare
turn around nobody there
never knowing if I'm all alone
cause paranoia is the only friend that I know
and everybody else is gone
their eyes are burning into my heart
fall and feeling fear I can't go on
and nobody will sound the alarm
Sit around late at night
sitting by the fireside
planning out to bury me alive
and when I'm done they all will laugh about how I died.
Cause everybody else is gone
their eyes are burning into my heart
we'll fall and feeling fear I can't go on
and nobody will sound the alarm
In the darkness of my mind
I hear a voice that seems to sigh
I'm going to die before I save myself
And everybody else is gone
Their eyes are burning into my heart
we'll fall and feeling fear I can't go on
and nobody will sound the alarm
we'll fall and fearing fear I can't go on
and nobody will sound the alarm
