Jade's basement was, to say the very least, interesting. Covered floor to ceiling in black light and band posters, it almost made you feel like you were on some sort of drug-induced trip after the black lights were turned on. A small set up of instruments, amps, and a microphone stand were tucked away in a corner near a large shelf that was stuffed with various tapes, CD's, records, and DVD's.
Alessa passed the room of as though it were nothing unusual, but that was only because she had pretty much spent the weekend down here.
Davey, Jade, Adam, and Hunter each took a seat on one of the various chairs or couches that occupied what was left of the space. Each seat looked as though it were specifically owned by the person sitting in it. Alessa wandered over to sit on the floor near Jade's chair, opting to lean on his knee.
I grabbed the lone bean bag in the corner. I noticed Davey's eyes catch mine with an amused glimmer.
"So what are we going to do?" Hunter asked, grabbing a magazine off the floor and flipping through it causally. Alessa looked up at Jade who shrugged then looked to Adam. Adam then looked to me and then I looked to Davey who looked a little miffed that he had gotten the short end of the stick.
"You know I never have any good ideas." He muttered, crossing his arms across his chest.
"Well genius, maybe you should have thought about that before you suggested we skip school and come hang out here," Jade replied.
"Well I figured that someone would have figured something out by now..."
Adam looked at Davey incredulously. "And how long have you known us?"
Davey glared. "You're right, I shouldn't have such high expectations.
A pillow was thrown across the room by Hunter. Alessa and I glanced at each other with smirks playing on our lips.
"How about you guys play a song for Ariane?" Alessa suggested. All eyes looked to me for a split second and the boys then looked to each other.
"Yeah, sure." Adam offered, and four bodies got up slowly toward the small set-up. Alessa walked over to the wall to turn on the regular lights and then she dragged me over to the couch that gave me a front row seat.
"These guys are really something else, Ari. Even Dustin's band isn't this good." She whispered, speaking of an old flame with big dreams of becoming a rock star.
It had been his brother that I'd been set up with on my birthday and who decided that there was no better way to spend a birthday than holding an icepack to your head on the way to the emergency room.
I snorted a little and watched the guys set up. Jade was busy plugging various cords into the wall and then he pulled the guitar strap over his head. Adam was all set up behind the drum set and Hunter was messing with the tuning of his base. Davey stood patiently at the mic stand and I watched him while trying to be surreptitious about it.
"You guys ready yet?" He asked impatiently.
Hunter strummed the bass triumphantly and nodded, everyone got into place and then Jade let loose a strum of a chord on the guitar.
I listened as the drum beat picked up and then the bass started playing. Davey swayed a little, his tiny hips swiveling gracefully in his tight pants. Alessa snickered when she realized who I was staring at.
He gave me a brief smile and parted his lips and began to sing with the voice of an earthbound angel. I felt my jaw drop.
"Told you, they're so much better..." Alessa said quietly. I nodded and she pushed my chin back into its right place.
"...Three tears I've saved for you. I'd retrace the steps that lead me here but nothing lives behind me..." Davey sang. I felt my leg tapping along with the music.
Alessa jumped a little beside me. "Will you be okay for a minute? I have to take this." I turned slightly so that I could see her cell phone in her hand I nodded.
..."Will you be my beloved? Will you help me to get through?" Davey looked at me as he sang, a small smile breaking through. I returned it and felt me sister move and leave beside me.
The song slowly wrapped up and Davey let out a sigh as he turned off the microphone and grinned like a mad man. He pranced over to me and sat down in the same seat that Alessa had occupied literally seconds before.
"So what did you think?" He asked.
Jade took off his guitar and set it on the stand, as did Hunter. Adam just stuck the drumsticks on his chair and they all came to sit and listen to what I had to say.
I brushed my bangs aside, without thinking, and smiled. "You guys are absolutely amazing!" I gushed, noticing that they had almost identical frowns on their faces.
I continued. "I mean, you're a lot better than any of the other bands around here..."
The frowns didn't dissipate.
I looked to each of them. "What? What's wrong?"
"Ariane..." Davey murmured, offering me his hand as he stood up. "Will you come with me for a second?"
My heart sped up and I nodded quickly. Jade, Hunter, and Adam looked at each other but their looks were more concerned than anything else I might have expected.
I followed behind like a puppy on a leash as Davey led me up the basement stairs toward the door. I began to worry.
Had I said something wrong?
Alessa opened the door before Davey had even grasped the handle. She smiled at the sight of Davey and I but her look quickly turned to horror when she observed me more closely. She gestured toward her hair and I cocked an eyebrow at her, not grasping what she was trying to silently relay to me.
Davey passed her without a word, I looked back at her and she tried once more to gesture to her hair, specifically, her bangs.
Then I realized my mistake.
My eyes widened and with my free hand I quickly brushed my bangs back into my face, hoping that Davey might look at me again and believe that the bruise he had seen was really just a trick of the light; a shadow that had been cast oddly on my face.
Alessa gave me a sad, encouraging smile as she disappeared behind the basement door to leave me alone with Davey.
He led me to the living room couch and I sat down on the soft suede. He opted to sit on the carpet in front of me.
"Ari...what's that on your eye?" He asked seriously, not releasing my hand.
I gulped and tried to sift through all the excuses I had used through the years. "I uh, ran into a door."
I almost winced at the lameness of that excuse, but it was the first thing that had come to mind. He looked at me skeptically and raised a hesitant hand to my hair.
I closed my eyes as he brushed away my bangs. I let out a shallow breath and waited for something, anything to be said. But there was nothing. The silence was deafening.
"Ariane...open your eyes..."
They remained closed.
"Ariane," He said more sternly this time. "Open your eyes."
Slowly they fluttered open, mostly against my better judgment. Davey's face hovered mere inches from my own and I inhaled shakily.
"Who did this to you?" He asked, a fire burning in his coffee brown eyes.
What had my excuse been? I had completely forgotten it. But as soon as I looked into his eyes, I knew that he wouldn't believe it...not for a second.
"Ariane," He said again. I tried not to lose myself in the tender whisper of his voice calling my name. "Ariane, what happened to you?"
I shook my head, trying to break the hold his gaze had on me. He sat back on his heels and tried to look into my eyes, looking for the answer I wouldn't give him voluntarily.
"Davey, I really don't want to talk about it." I managed to croak out.
He let out a heavy sigh. I looked away from him completely, wishing for Alessa to come and rescue me from the intensity of Davey's gaze.
I heard him let out a small sigh and his knee joints cracked a little when he stood up, letting go of my hand. I turned to look at him and he took my face in his hands, staring into my eyes.
He gave me a small smile before he spoke. "I doubt a door would dare attack you so ruthlessly, but if you don't want to talk about it right now, I'll accept that. But please, Ari, if you need to talk to me...ever...please don't hesitate. "
I opened my mouth to respond, to thank him, but I was silenced when his lips softly brushed against my bruise.
"Come on, let's get back down there." He said quickly, a hint of a blush gracing his pale cheeks. I nodded wordlessly, too shocked at his small display.
Will you be my destruction? Will you help me to be through?
