RECAP:
Kouga marked you as his mate.
------->
It's been two months since Kouga took you as his mate. Your return to the wolf den was a happy one. Everyone greeted you with a smile and Kouga with a slap on the back, followed by comments you could never quite make out but always left Kouga with a smirk on his face. Kouga never left your side for very long. You didn't mind. Being so close to him, it made you feel safe. You felt like you belonged. But you still had your doubts about whether or not Kouga was truly happy with you.
You sat on a small cliff, off to the side of the large waterfall. Kouga had just returned from a hunting trip. He had killed a large boar along with a few deer. Many of the other pack members had already begun to prepare the meat. As a few others approached Kouga and began joking with him, while the newest litter of wolf pups began to make a game out of trying to catch Kouga's tail that was now swinging out of annoys of their new little game. It made you laugh watching the scene. Kouga turned in your direction and gave you a smile and you waved in reply. You stood and leapt from the cliff and walked over to Kouga. As you came to stand next to him, he wrapped his arms around you and nuzzled your neck. You placed a quick kiss on his cheek and told him you were going for a walk and would return before night fall.
You quietly slipped away into the surrounding forest. You weaved your way through the trees. Following the path you have come to know by heart. As you walked further into the woods the sound of water making your ear twitch. You felt the wind whip against your face, carrying the scent of wild flowers. You exited the forest, the afternoon sun shining down upon the small meadow you had just entered. It made you feel so relaxed every time you saw it. It was surrounded by trees of all sizes. It had a river running through it, connecting with the much larger one that flowed passed the wolf den. All around flowers of different shades and scents grew wild among the lush grass.
You sank down into the grass, enjoying the feel of the wind in your hair. You heard footsteps behind you but you didn't need to look. You knew who it was already. Ever since the night Kouga marked you, you've been able to sense where he was. You felt the grass give way as the wolf prince sat down beside you.
You rested your head on his shoulder, feeling his muscles relax at your touch, but there was still a tension there. For the past couple of days Kouga had been acting differently then usual, distant. When you asked him about it he said it was the stress the elders were putting on him. You understood that. Lately the elders of the wolf pack; the oldest and wisest wolves, kept requesting meetings with Kouga. He never would talk about what they had to say to each other but perhaps it didn't concern you. Kouga was the leader. Ginta and Hakkaku had said that it was probably just about a rival pack or something. But still.
"I love you Kouga." you whispered to him as you nuzzled into his shoulder. You felt him snake his strong arm around your waist and pull you closer to him. "I love you too (Y/N)." as he kissed you gently on the forehead. You both sat quietly for a few moments, enjoying each other's company.
You shifted out of his grasp, getting to your feet. Kouga gave you a smile as you told him you were going to go pick the herbs that grew within the flowers. He leaned deeper into the grass as you turned and walked away from him. You could feel his eyes watching you as you go.
Kouga's POV
He watched you walk to the middle of the meadow, still not too far away. Kouga relaxed more into the grass. Folding his arms behind his head and resting his body on the grass he stared up at the passing clouds. His mind wondering to the events of the past week.
Flashback:
"Hey Kouga's back!" Ginta yelled from his look-out position on one of the grassy cliffs. Kouga watched him as he came down and ran over to the wolf leader. Stopping only a few feet away to stare at what Kouga carried in his arms. "Kouga?" he formed it as a question. He could tell what Kouga had done; the mark was clearly visible on her neck. "Kouga you..." "Shut-up Ginta." Kouga pushed passed the now stunned wolf as he leapt to his cave off to the side of the waterfall. He laid you down on the soft furs, and then curled himself around you.
A few days later the wolf elders had arrived at the den. Word that he had taken a mate had spread quickly; many were over joyed for the young couple. Others were shocked. Surprised that it was the same half demon he had found outside the den a few months before. But the elders were determined to know how the leader who had seemed so determined to have a human girl as his mate, now stood confident by the side of a young female wolf.
"Do you realize what you've done Kouga?" asked an elderly gray wolf with a scar running across his left eye. "I did nothing wrong." Kouga growled at the three wolves that sat in front of him. "DON'T YOU DARE GROWL AT US!" snapped a large black wolf, who stood bristled and ready to fight. "Stop all of you. I swear all males are idiots." as the last of the elders made her presents known. A slender white wolf. Smaller then the others that sat at her side. Her fur dull from old age but her eyes held all the wisdom and understanding passed down from many generations. "Kouga no one doubts your decision, it's just the way you went about it." Kouga let out a low growl which was ignored by the female, "we have talked to your subordinates, Ginta and Hakkaku. They said you were acting strange that day. That your eyes kept flashing red. You didn't let your beast take over did you?" "NO! No I would never have allowed that," he let out a sigh as he shifted uncomfortably under the older wolf's gaze. "She was in heat, but I didn't take her because of that. I wanted her. I've been running from my feelings for her for awhile now. She's my mate and that's it." He stood and turned his back on the elders; walking towards the exit of the cave. "What of the human?" the question came from the gray wolf. His voice stopping the young wolf in his tracks. "You chased her for a long time Kouga. Even though it went against the code of the pack, you still continued. Have you no more feelings for the girl?" Kouga stood still unable to answer. He was so sure of himself when he marked (Y/N), but had it been jealousy of what Kagome and Inuyasha had. How she had rejected him time and time again. He was unable to give them the answer they were hoping for that day
Later I had talked to the elder female. She had done most of the talking. She just confirmed what I had been thinking all along. That even though I had chased after Kagome for so long, I never truly expected anything to come from it. even though I never wanted to admit it to myself, she never wanted me. I was mated to (Y/N) now and I did love her. My beast may have wanted her but so did I. That much I could say. I love her.
End flashback
The thought of that brought a smile to Kouga's face. He sat up quickly hearing movement coming towards him. (Y/N) was making her way back to him. Kouga watched as she came running towards him. How even with all the scents in the meadow, he could still pick up hers. Smelling sweeter then any of the flowers to him. Her hair swayed in the wind. A few flowers now tucked up around her wolfish ears, a smile upon her face. He felt his heart skip a beat as his eyes traveled down from her face to the mark on her neck. His mark. The mark that told every demon in his territory and every where's else that she belonged to him. None would dare lay a hand on her or be forced to contend with him. She belonged to him and him to her.
He watched as you come running towards him, a smile appearing upon his face, he knew that being with you would make his life worth living. His heart may still hold some doubt but he knew he had made the right decision.
He was brought out of his thoughts by a scream that shattered the serenity of the meadow. Panic nestled its way into the pit of his stomach as his eyes focused on what was happening. (Y/N) had stopped moving and was calling his name. His eyes widen in shock as a blue aura starts to appear around her body, pulling her back. "Kouga, please help me!" He moved as quickly as he could, his speed was nothing, as if he was trying to move through water, everything was in slow motion. She was slipping away from him. He reached his hand out to her, trying to grasp her, to pull her back. Every step he took towards her, the distance never seemed to get smaller. The blue aura continued to grow, engulfing her entire form. He felt his eyelids grow heavy, his body began to slow. He was slipping into a sleep unable to stop himself. The last thing he saw was tears streaming down your face as you disappeared and he hit the ground.
Did you find this chapter confusing? It has to do with doubt in Kouga's heart and if he still has true feelings for Kagome or not---------->
Thanks for reading.
