"David, look!" I cried, pointing to a glint of gold peeking out from under a pile of damp autumn leaves. I watched as he pulled a shining gold watch from the earth and gave a low whistle.

"It's a Rolex...you have any idea how much these things are worth?" David speculated, fastening the watch around his wrist. "Whoever lost this must be missing it, I guess we should bring it to the Police Station," he sighed as he gazed longingly at the timepiece.

"Well, hey, why don't you just wear it until we get back into town? That way we won't lose it and you and that watch can have a little alone time," I smirked, scooping up an armful of leaves and showering him in them.

He groaned when the leaves stuck to his clothes and hair, but smirked deviously. "Now you're asking for it!" he cried, grabbing a handful of smelly mud and crushing it into my hair before I could jump away. Ugh! My hair would smell like dog crap for weeks! I narrowed my eyes at him and prepared for battle, reaching back into the leaf pile and digging my arms deep in the earthy mix, hoping to find worms and maggots to shove down David's pants. He would have creepy-crawlies wriggling out of his pockets for hours once I-

The dirt beneath my fingers gave way to something colder and solid; I was immediately reminded of the time that I had rushed into my Gran's room as a young child and grabbed her hand. It had seemed too cold, too stiff in my small hands. It wasn't until my mother rushed me out of the room that I understood that she was dead.

I felt my mouth go dry as I pushed the damp leaves aside and found what I had dreaded. The partially revealed torso of a man lay beneath the leaves, motionless and covered in grime. My throat tightened as I dropped the armful of leaves at David's feet and staggered backwards. I felt my foot catch on a root and my body plunged in backwards into a dip in the earth. Leaves avalanched after me, covering my body completely.

David stood transfixed to the spot, staring wide-eyed at the corpse without comprehension. A twig snapped at the top of the hill and David's head spun just in time to catch the eyes of a lone man holding a pile of kindling. The man turned away quickly and disappeared from view, but his expression etched itself into my mind. His piercing, accusing eyes shot venom at David as though he had just watched him murder the man with his bare hands. That was when it hit me: David looked like he was alone in the middle of the woods, covered in dirt and wearing an expensive watch that probably belonged to the dead man. The man had thought that David was the murderer.

I frowned at the official looking packet on the desk in front of me and tried to make sense of the complicated problem on the page. I was halfway through the SAT's and quite frankly, I was worrying for my future. If the SAT's were a representation of how much I knew, it seemed that the only thing I was cut out for was scrubbing dishes for the rest of my life; not the most pleasant of lives to look forward to.

I was finishing up the math portion of my test when I heard shouts in the hallway followed by the sound of something crashing into a locker. The cries were louder now, closer to the classroom that I was in. The words were barely distinguishable, but the teacher supervising the testing opened the door to see what was going on, and the words crashed down on me.

"I DIDN'T DO IT! LOOK AT ME! LOOK ME IN THE EYES! I DIDN'T KILL THAT MAN! I'M NOT A MURDERER! I AM NOT A MURDERER!"

I went rigid, fear gripping at my stomach before I tore out of my seat and flung the door wide open just in time to see David being dragged out of the school by a pair of burly Police Officers screaming his rights to him. David's handcuffed arms thrashed against the men but only managed to turn around enough to look me dead in the eyes for a split second. Dark spots rushed to the front of my vision and the world turned black. My last conscious thought was of David's eyes and the wild, terrified way that they had screamed at me to help him. All I could hope was that without having said anything, he would understand what I hoped that my eyes were screaming back: I'll try.

Don't let me go, it's not the end.
