You stand motionless in front of the dome-shaped house, fist inches from the door as you listen nervously to the muffled shouts echoing from behind it. "No, Goku, I'm leaving!" a sharp female voice shrieks. "Gohan needs to do his schoolwork! He can't train right now!" You blink in confusion, wondering what exactly you had managed to get yourself into. The lady had seemed perfectly nice on the phone..."No!" Your thoughts are interrupted by yet another yell, this time followed by a low, pleading male voice. "ChiChi, be reasonable." it ushers quietly, the words almost too soft for you to decipher. "He's only a kid. He-" "Exactly!" the high-pitched scream cuts it off. "He needs to finish his homework! I'm not going to let you ruin his future, Goku!" A worrying silence falls and you ponder whether or not you ought to knock when the male voice is heard one final time. "I'm sorry, ChiChi." "GET OUT!!" Another silence follows and all conversation ceases, tension thick in the air. You bite your lip hesitantly, slowly extending your fist and knocking softly on the door. Maybe this babysitting thing had been a bad idea after all.
Directing your gaze to the sky above, you stare up tiredly at the darkening heavens, letting out a sigh. You shouldn't have given up your weekend for this. The fifty bucks wasn't worth it. And the lady whose kid you were looking after wasn't exactly in the best mood, if the insufferable shrieks were any indication. Biting your lip, you hear the door swing open and you lower your eyes, coming face to face with the smiling visage of a dark-haired woman. "Hello." she greets, voice much more pleasant than the one you had heard only moments before. "You must be ****. Welcome." Slightly perplexed by the situation, you nodd in affirmation and grin back forcibly. "Um, yeah." you tell her, watching as she steps to the right and beckons you inside. "Great. Please come in, I'll introduce you to my Gohan."
..
Nodding again silently, you follow her further into the house, eyes wandering over the immaculate furniture and shining floors. You bite your lip once more, wondering distraughtly what ChiChi would do to you if you managed to spill something while she was gone. Gulping back your anxiety, you continue walking and soon find yourself standing in front of a closed door. "He's in here." ChiChi beams, turning the knob and stepping inside. Following her lead, you let your eyes wander about the little room, gaze soon falling upon a small boy hunching studiously over a desk. He appears to be about seven or eight years old, with long, dark hair tied into a painful-looking ponytail. Holding a pencil in his right hand, he scribbles quickly across a sheet of paper, glancing periodically back to a heavy textbook sitting in his lap. "Gohan," ChiChi addresses him, watching as he turns to face her. "This is your babysitter, honey. Her name is ****." Giving the kid a thumbs up, you smile and begin to greet him, blinking in confusion when he slides off the chair and bows to you. "Nice to meet you, Ms. ****." he says quietly, raising dark eyes once again. More than surprised at the immense respect, you feel your eyes widen when ChiChi clucks her tongue dissaprovingly, crossing her arms as the smile leaves her annoyed face. "Now, Gohan, don't interrupt our guest." she taps her foot, watching as the boy looks quickly down at the floor. "Sorry." he mumbles, falling silent. You glance back at ChiChi, affronted at her lack of compassion. The woman, however, appears to be in ignorance of your dissaproval, and grins happily once more, turning back towards you. "I'm afraid I must be leaving now." she smiles, checking her watch. "Thank you for looking after Gohan, ****. Make sure he studies until bedtime. Your money's on the kitchen counter, and I'll be seeing you at about nine tomorrow morning." You nodd, noticing that Gohan has resumed his work. "Um, okay." you blink, unsure of what else to say and rather eager to have the woman out of the area. However, to your slight displeasure, she continues. "Dinner's in the fridge." ChiChi gestures towards the kitchen down the hall. "You are welcome to sleep in the guestroom, I have it prepared for you. Oh, and if there's an emergency, my phone number's on the counter with your payment. Please let me know if anything goes wrong." Nodding for the umpteenth time, your mind wanders back to the male voice you heard earlier and you cock your head, pondering whether inquiring about it would be pushing your luck. Watching as she bends down and gives her son a brief hug, you raise a hand, deciding to question her in a more...discrete manner. "Um, excuse me," you begin, taking a deep breath. "But will your husband be coming home any time tonight?" Her expression sours, and you immedietly regret the question. However, the stern visage lightens almost as quickly and ChiChi shakes her head. "No. I'm not married." Perplexed and slightly worried, you only half-listen as she bids you goodbye, walking down the hallway opposite and closing the front door behind her.
...
Sighing, you look back to the kid, who eyes you nervously as he continues the work. "You know what?" you say to him, watching as he turns in his seat. "You can take the rest of the night off." He grins in disbelief, black eyes shining with hopefullness. "Really?" he asks, sliding out of the chair. "You mean it?" Rather surprised at his excitement, you smile back at him and nodd your head, feeling sorry for the boy. "Yeah." you reply. "It looks like you're working hard. You deserve a break." Still grinning like a madman, he laughs cheerfully and rushes up to you, embracing you gratefully. "Thank you, Ms. ****." he releases you, leaving you with a shocked but pleased expression. "No problem, kid." you tell him. "And you don't have to call me 'Ms. ****'. I won't tell your mom." He mirths at this, plopping down comfortably on his bed and pulling the band out of his hair. "Thanks." he repeats, sighing as the jubilant smile wanes. "****?" he asks after a pause, eyes wide. "Do you know where my dad is?" Frowning slightly, you ponder how to answer the question. ChiChi had said she wasn't married, so where was Gohan's father? "Um...no, I don't." you answer truthfully. "Why do you ask?" He shrugs, looking back up at the ceiling. "No reason." he finally replies, shifting his position in order to look out the bedroom window. "It's just...nevermind." Feeling a sharp stab of pity for the kid, you take a deep breath and put your hand on his shoulder, deciding it would be best to keep his mind off this obviously distressing subject. "Hey, what do you say we go get something to eat?" you inquire, watching as his ebon orbs brighten considerably. "Hungry?" Gohan slides off the bed, nodding eagerly. "Yeah, that'd be great!" he exclaims, running off in the direction of the kitchen. You take off slowly after him, mind swirling with pity and confusion.
...
Quickly finding your way to the kitchen, you snatch your payment money off the countertop and slide it into your pocket, turning back to the fridge. "Let's see." you glance over your dinner options, gaze fallen upon a precooked chicken. Pulling it out, you set it on the countertop and look back to Gohan, shrugging. "How's this?" you ask, watching as he licks his lips eagerly. "Looks good." he replies, watching with hungry eyes as you discard the cellophane surrounding it and place it carefully into the oven. Setting the timer and turning up the the temperature, you quickly prepare some rice and vegetables and set them aside, strolling into the dining room and sitting down in a nearby chair. "So, what do you like to do, Gohan?" you ask the boy, smiling when he sits down beside you. He looks nervous for a moment, averting his gaze before looking timidly back to you. "Promise you won't tell mom?" he asks, blinking worriedly. Confused, you nodd your head unsurely. "Uh, sure." He brightens at the vow. "I like martial arts." he smiles. "It's really fun training with my daddy." Slightly relieved, you feel your brow furrow slightly as words from earlier reenter your mind. "Gohan needs to do his schoolwork! He can't train right now!" "You do, huh?" you ask, trying to shake off the memory. "Then we have something in common." He cocks his head. "You like to fight too?" he asks, eyes wide with surprise. You grin, nodding. "Yup. Maybe I could show you a thing or two sometime." Gohan's mouth curves into a grin and he laughs, nodding. "Cool!" Before you can respond, you hear the buzz of the oven timer ring out from the kitchen. You stand, smiling down at the boy. "Let's eat."
...
[10 minutes later] You find yourself staring at Gohan in awe, watching as he finishes off his seventh bowl of rice. Taking another bite of chicken, you blink when the kid gobbles down the last of his plate, hurriedly piling himself another. The boy was a bottomless pit. Finding the situation both humorous and slightly worrying (as the amount of food was decreasing rapidly and Gohan didn't seem to be slowing down in the slightest), you gulp down the remainder of your lemonade and push your plate away, exhaling slowly. "Here, you can have the rest of mine." you offer, sliding the dish over to him. He nodds gratefully and rapidly downs the remainder of the food, sitting back in his seat. "Thanks, ****. That was really good." he grins, placing a hand to the back of his head and giggling. "Sorry I ate so much. I didn't mean to make you cook all that." Smiling, you shake your head. "No problem, kid. I don't mind." You slip tiredly off the chair, piling the dinner dishes on top of eachother. "Um, I think it's time for you to be getting to bed, Gohan." you tell him."I'll be up for a little while longer. Feel free to get up and tell me if you need anything." The boy nodds, turning toward the hallway. "Okay. Thanks, ****." he replies, giving you a playful wave before turning the corner and dissapearing from sight. You smile as you pile the plates into the dishwasher, happy that you could help the boy and slightly sorry that you could only stay with him for this one night. He seemed like a great kid, and his mother wasn't exactly the most understanding person in the world. Sighing, you close the dishwasher and lean against the counter, eyes traveling detachedly to the window. Noticing three candles sitting upon the sill, an idea pops into your head and you pull open the nearest drawer, searching for matches. After rooting through two without any success, you slide open the third one and peer down into it, only to find yourself staring at a collection of folded papers. Cocking an eyebrow, you extract the top sheet and run your eyes over the words, mouth falling open in surprise. 'ChiChi, my love, it reads. 'I so look forward to the day when we can finally be together. I know you are dissatisfied with your bumbling oaf of a husband, and I send my deepest sympathies. Please come and visit me soon, for I have just purchased a new Mercedes, and I would love nothing more than to present you with it. I hope you will come receive your gift and leave that pathetic family of yours behind. I assure you that life with me will far exceed that with the idiot you now spend your days with. Allow me to make you the happiest woman on the face of the planet. Shocked, you continue reading, blanching when you come to the letter's final sentence. Please come visit me on the night of- You choke on air. October 6th. That was today. Smacking the letter down on the countertop, you clamp your teeth down on your tongue, inhaling in disbelief. ChiChi was cheating on her husband.
...
Feeling both guilty and infuriated by the realization, you suck in a deep beath and turn towards the front door, looking distressedly out of the kitchen window. Knowing that you would not be able to go to sleep if you attempted to at the moment, you snatch your key and quickly decide that it would be best to get out and walk around a little; clear your head before you tried to settle down for the night. However, knowing that Gohan was likely asleep by now, you head off down the hall and make your way to his room, taking care to tread softly as you slip inside. You find the boy curled up under his bedcovers, a calm expression on his innocent face as he twists slightly in his sleep. Feeling incredibly sorry for the kid, you inch forward and pull the blanket up closer around him, sighing. "'Night." you whisper, running your fingers gently through the long black hair. When he doesn't respond, you pull back slowly and step back out of the room, taking one last look at the slumbering boy before heading back to the front entrance. Key in hand, you pull the door open and step out into the night, locking it behind you. Even though you felt rather guilty that Gohan would be alone for a few minutes, you assured yourself that you would remain in the area, and would notice if anything was amiss. Gulping, you make your way down the short path and find yourself entering the surrounding forest, the moon your only source of light. Breathing in the cool night air, you weave through the trees and gaze up at the sky, eyes fixed upon the many gleaming stars. After strolling for a few more minutes, you soon come to a little clearing, the sound of running water burbling about the area. Confused, you stare about at your surroundings and notice that creek runs through the clearing's center, water sloshing over the rocks as it makes its way downstream. Deciding that you had better get back to the house now lest you forget the path you took, you take a reluctant step back when your gaze falls upon the dark sillhouette of a man. Doubting your eyes, you blink repeatedly as the sitting figure comes more clearly into view, a tousled mass of black hair obvious on the top of it's head.
...
Startled by the unexpected figure, you inhale sharply and take a step back, ready to run back to ChiChi's house. However, before you can force your feet to move any further, the man gets slowly to his feet turning around to face you. The moonlight falling on his now-upright form allows you to observe him more clearly. He appears to be of average height and muscled build, clothed in articles of bright orange and muted blue. His black hair, which you had noticed earlier, falls in uneven spikes about his head. The stranger looks at you for a few seconds of silence, his oddly familiar black eyes widening in confusion. "Hey," he says, cocking his head. "Who are you?" The memory of his low voice smacking into you like a brick wall, your own eyes widen and you take a tentative step forward, gaze locking with that of the man. "Um, I'm ****." you reply quietly, deciding to go with your instincts on his identity. "Gohan's babysitter." The man takes a few steps toward you, stopping about three feet away. "My son Gohan?" he inquires, staring down at you with perplexed and saddened eyes. Feeling slightly guilty for speaking to him in the first place, you nodd in affirmation. "Yeah. You're-you're Goku, right?" Sincerely hoping you haven't said anything offensive, you watch as a little smile creeps onto the mans visage. "That's me." he tells you, extending a hand in your direction. You put your own in his an shake it awkwardly, the situation seeming odder with every moment that passes. "Erm, I think I should be getting back to check on Gohan now." you say, backing up slightly. "I mean, it was nice meeting you-" Your statement is cut off when Goku grabs you arm gently, halting your retreat. "You don't have to." he says matter-of-factly. "I can sense his energy from here. He's fine." Perplexed, you observe as he sits down once again beside the river, taking a seat next to him. "Huh? What do you mean?" He smiles. "I can sense his life energy." he states. "That way I can tell where he is." When you don't reply due to confusion, he grins understandingly, outstretching a large palm. "Here. I'll show you." he offers, taking your hand in his own. Before you can make any move to protest or question his actions, a warm sensation blossoms between your hands and you pull away in fright, staring down at your palm in shock. A small, glimmering ball of light sits in the center of your hand, sparkling under the stars.
...
"Wh-what is it?" you inquire, looking up at him to find that a similar sphere of light rests in his own palm. "It's life energy." he explains. "I gave you a little of mine so you could see what it looks like. If you can sense that energy in other people, you can figure out how far away they are. You can use it in fights, too." You continue to look at the object in awe, watching as the light begins to flicker. A few moments pass before the sphere dissapates into thin air, leaving you with an outstretched hand and expression of incredulity. "That's...awesome." you spit out, blinking. "I need to learn how to use this stuff, then." Goku lays down beside you, looking up at your face with large eyes. "You fight?" he asks. You nodd back. "A little. I can see why Gohan likes to do martial arts with you, now." Meaning the statement as a compliment, you are surprised when the man's expression grows forlorn, his eyes directed to the sky above. "Yeah." he mumbles. "But...we don't really get to anymore." Torn between respecting his space and trying to comfort him, you lay down beside the man, looking up at the stars. "Why not?" you ask, Gohan's earlier words silently giving you the answer. Goku sighs. "ChiChi always makes him study." he replies. "She says I'm a bad influence 'cause I never went to school." Soured thoughts of ChiChi running through your mind, you find yourself shocked by Goku's next statement. "I just wish she'd stop going off with other men." You turn to look him in the eye, mouth dropping open in surprise. "How-how do you kow that?" you ask, watching in shock as he shifts to face you. "I can...well, I just know." he says quietly, looking back to the sky. "I mean, I dunno if I can really blame her. I was gone for so long. It's just..." Wondering what's going through his mind, you feel something soft brush against your arm and start in surprise, looking down to observe a fuzzy brown appendage brushing across the ground below.
...
Upon discovering that the tail is actually coming from behind Goku, you sit up in shock and scoot a few inches away, only to be caught by the man's confused gaze. However, seeming to comprehend your surprise, the man bites his lip in apology and curls the tail around his waist. "Sorry." he apologizes. "ChiChi doesn't like it either. I'll keep it out of your way." Sadness beginning to replace some of your surprise, you shake your head and reach out tentatively, laying a hand gently on the sable appendage without fully realizing what you are doing. "No, it's okay." you assure him. "I don't mind." Detachedly wondering why the situation doesn't seem more odd, you smile slightly when a grin comes to Goku's lips, the tail relaxing to lay upon the grass. "Thanks." he blinks with gratitude, happy, dark eyes gleaming in the moonlight. Gaze running over the man's handsome face, you lean a bit closer and stare down at him, silently angered by the fact that ChiChi could have dared to throw Goku away. He was so considerate, so kind. And he just wanted to spend some time with his son. It wasn't fair that she wouldn't allow him to look after his own kid, that she put you in charge when Goku should be the one tucking Gohan into bed at night. It just wasn't fair that she knowingly made Goku so sad, when all he wanted to do was be there for her and his son. Staring down into gleaming ebon orbs, you bend down slightly and graze the side of his face with your lips, only half aware of what you are doing. A few moments later, reality hits with an uncomfortable jolt and you pull away embarrasedly, ashamed of yourself. "S-sorry." you apologize hastily, looking shakily into his wide, confused eyes. A few shades short of trembling, you back away and begin to stand when Goku reaches out slowly, closing a hand gently around your wrist. "Nah, it's okay." he smiles reassuringly, sitting up beside you without loosening his grasp. Reluctant to move or respond for fear that this experience is merely a fluke (or perhaps a dream), you inhale quickly when Goku leans towards you, his handsomely innocent face inches from your own. "Here," he says, releasing your arm in favor of holding your shoulder. "I'll give you one." Before you can even begin to ponder the words, you feel Goku's lips moving slowly across yours, his hand running softly through your hair.
...
An eternity passes before he pulls away, smiling slightly as a light blush blossoms across his face. Still grinning, he tears his eyes away from yours and plops back down on the earth, this time on his stomach as he gazes down into the water of the river. Feeling oddly comfortable considering the situation, you stretch out beside him and direct your attention to the tail once more, which now flops happily about in the open air. "Why do you have a tail, Goku?" you ask in earnest curiosity, watching as it curls around, as if happy to be mentioned. Goku blinks, looking you straight in the in the eye. "I-uh...I'm not sure you really want to know that." he says quietly, gaze falling. "I mean, it's kinda weird." Silently cursing ChiChi's lack of understanding for the thousanth time, you rest a hand on the man's shoulder comfortingly, surprised at the freedom you feel in doing so. "It's okay. Go ahead." you reassure, laughing slightly. "I won't run away." Goku chuckles, turning to face you and smiling shyly. Hardly a second passes before you find yourself lying on your back, pinned down by the man as his soft lips press against your mouth. Both surprised and pleased at the sudden move, you lace your fingers into the thick black hair and run the digits through it, amazed at the texture as you revel in the warmth radiating from Goku's muscled body. Before you can fully react to the situation, you feel the man's tongue tentatively licking at your lower lip and you gasp, allowing it to slip slowly between your lips. Letting out a detached sigh of bliss, you reluctantly release Goku's mouth and bury your head into his solid chest, eyes fluttering shut as you breath in the comforting scent. Eventually coming back to reality, you pull away from the man and hoist yourself back into a sitting position, looking unsurely back into his shining black orbs. The blush reappering on his cheeks, he places a hand behind his head and laughs nervously, eyes gleaming with a shy but sultry heat. "Sorry." apologizes. "But you just...tasted good." Laughing out loud, you watch as he stands up and offers you his hand, grinning as you use it to pull yourself up. "Let's go back to your house." you suggest, watching the beautiful eyes brighten with hope. "You can go say goodnight to Gohan." Goku's face falls a bit and he bites his lip, looking back towards the direction of the home he had been banned from. "But what if ChiChi finds out I went back?" he inquires worriedly, sighing. Remembering the letter you had found earlier, you squeeze his hand comfortingly and smile. "I don't think she'll be coming home anytime soon." you say honestly, waiting for his reaction. To your delight, he grins widely, large eyes increasing in size. "Let's go."
...
You follow Goku through the woods for a few minutes, relying on his surprisingly sharp eyesight to find the way, until you eventually get back to his dome-shaped house. Unlocking the door, you allow him inside and shut it behind you, turning and leaning against the wall. "I'm gonna go see Gohan." he tells you, radiating happiness at the prospect of seeing his son without ChiChi being able to make him leave. "Come with me?" You grin, nodding as you follow him down the hallway to Gohan's room. Quietly, Goku tiptoes in and stands beside the bed, smiling down at his sleeping son. You feel yourself grinning as the man threads his fingers into his son's hair, mussing it gently. A few more moments pass before he turns back to you, looking happier than you had seen him. You stare back into his dark eyes for a moment before a loud grumbling noise shatters your trace. Startled, you glance around the room, only to notice Goku giggling bashfully with a hand behind his head. "Sorry." he apologizes, grinning. "I'm kinda hungry." Feeling a grin curve your lips, you laugh when Goku walks up to you, resting your head against his muscled chest. "Fine. Let's go get some food, then." you agree, staring up happily into the onyx eyes. "I think there might be some chicken left."
...
...The next morning, ChiChi rushed hurriedly into her house, planning to grab a few more of her things before she left the place, her husband, and her son forever. However, upon entering the living room and finding the father of her child snuggled up on the sofa with the babysitter she had left in charge the night before, ChiChi forgot all about what she was there to do and ran from the room in an angered panic. Discovering her most private love letter layed out candidly on the kitchen counter, she came to several realizations and left the house immediatly, too shocked and humiliated to notice the numerous bowls of rice and chicken that had been left out as a result of a rather large late night snack. Frazzled, ChiChi hopped into her brand new Mercedes and took off with the man of her dreams, far too ignorant to realize just how foolish she had been to leave Goku behind.
Sighing with relief when you heard the woman take off, you nuzzled contently into your Goku's chest, grateful for her stupidity and content to stay right where you were.
