Vulnerability can make a vampire vicious. A soul can cause me to think twice, but it can also harm me twice as much. When my soul came back to me it felt like one part of me had awakened again, but felt sad as if someone had taken it away from a kind of paradise. Bain told me to listen to my soul when I was at loss, but even though a soul is supposed to be a good thing to have they can be quite torturous. Upon having my soul again also came a new kind of training. This training began after my last sunrise and would continue for the rest of my newly immortal life.
My life was now reborn.
Chapter 1: The Last Sunrise
It was almost dawn as Isabelle stood next to Bain's waiting for one of the nice young sailors to take him aboard. Bain's coffin was made out of a dark wood. It had four handles for carrying the body away. The surface of the coffin had an eagle engraved into the smooth wood, and on the sides were symbols and strange letters engraved into it. This would be her last sunrise. After this all life would continue in darkness. She ran her hands over the eagle engraved into the wood feeling its texture and sighed when a young sailor came to greet her.
Sailor: Where's your daddy little girl?
Isabelle looked up at the sailor with her innocent blue eyes. Now it was her turn to act. She used the softest voice she could with the sailor.
Isabelle: In here.
She pointed to the coffin below her.
He looked at her with a sorry face.
Sailor: I'm sorry to hear that Miss.
He took her small hands in his. They felt warm around her hands which were cold as ice.
Sailor: You're cold as ice.
She looked him straight in the eyes and gave out a small sob.
He took her in his arms and picked her up.
Sailor: There, there Miss.
Isabelle: Mommy's waiting for us in South Carolina.
Sailor: And Mommy will get you. Come I'll take you and your Daddy to a special cabin.
The sailor motioned for a couple of guys next to him to pick up the coffin as he carried the girl aboard the ship. He walked up to a door and opened it revealing a nicely furnished cabin or nicely for a ship. The walls were covered in maps of the earth's great land masses and seas. There was a table at the very end of the room with papers of all sorts spread out on it, some containing sketches of sea monsters and ships. There were no windows, but there were oil lamps hanging from the walls brightly blazing. There was a small bed on the far right of the cabin were a man lay outstretched playing with a stack of cards. His face was as pale as the moon, and his short hair glowed red in the surrounding lights. He looked up at the newcomers as the sailor walked in with the girl in his arms, four men walked in behind him carrying the coffin.
Sailor: Is this the coffin you said would arrive before morning Captain?
The sailor put Isabelle down on her feet while the Captain walked over to the coffin and examined the symbols on the side.
Captain: Yes, put it over there.
He pointed to a spot next to the bed and looked at Isabelle.
Captain: Nobody said anything about a girl though.
Sailor: She came with the coffin, says her father's in it and that her mother's waiting for her in South Carolina.
Captain: Very well, leave us.
The sailor and his four men left closing the cabin door behind them which left, besides Bain, Isabelle and the Captain alone in the cabin. The Captain turned and walked over toward the coffin.
Captain: So Bain's your father now?
Isabelle turned to face the Captain.
Isabelle: Yes, Sir.
The Captain lifted the lid off the coffin and Bain sat upright in it, looking at the Captain.
Bain: Hello Richard.
Richard: It's been a long time. How were things in Egypt?
Bain: My home's finally fallen as has my father's pyramid.
Richard: I'm sorry to here that. Who's the girl?
Richard pointed to Isabelle who seemed to be listening into their conversation with much interest. She came forward now and sat next to the coffin.
Bain: This is my daughter Isabelle.
Richard looked at Isabelle examining her newly vampire features.
Richard: You picked out a fine woman there Bain.
Isabelle looked at Bain with questionable eyes.
Bain: I'll explain later. Run along and play, but be back in here before the sun is up ahead of us. You're changing faster than you know. You'll sleep in my coffin until we can get one to fit you.
Isabelle nodded and headed towards the steps. Richard had now continued his conversation with Bain.
Richard: Ah, a quiet girl.
Bain: She'll come around. She's a little shy.
Richard: I just hope she wouldn't kill off my men.
Bain: She wouldn't once she's had her soul returned to her. Do you still have your sorceress on board?
Richard: Yes, she's still here. Once she sees Isabelle out at night she'll know what to do.
Isabelle opened the door silently leaving the men to continue their conversation and gasped as outside the ship had already come to life. Sailors were untying the ropes that held the ship to the docks, and the sky had already taken on a bright blue color. She began walking towards the mast as the ship moved out unto the sea towards the rising sun. She ran up the steps toward the mast and watched as the sun began to rise up behind the calm sea. Its rays touched everything in sight as it turned the waters from black to a brilliant blue. The wood of the ship took on a nice brown color and the sea began to sparkle from the lighted rays. The sun seemed like a lady who had just gotten up from a deep sleep, the sea its mirror. The sailor from before came up behind her and began to whisper something under his breath.
Sailor: Mirror, mirror in the sea isn't the sun the fairest their can be?
The sailor went and put his arms around Isabelle who spun around to look at him.
Sailor: Did I scare you?
Isabelle: No, I heard you before you did so much as to even try and put your arms around me.
The sailor looked down at his feet.
Sailor: Oh. I'm sorry miss; I shouldn't be playing around with girls after they've just experienced death in their family.
He looked back up at the sun now.
Isabelle: And the sun is not the fairest of all. You've forgotten the moon.
Sailor: But the moon is only out at night.
Isabelle: No, the moon can be seen during the day as well.
Isabelle pointed to a place to the far left of the sky where indeed the moon was.
Sailor: But the moon receives its light from the sun.
Isabelle: But it's closer to the earth, and unlike the sun it takes the sun's light and reflects it towards the earth when it could be reflecting its light somewhere else. The moon is fairer then the sun.
Sailor: But the moon doesn't give light to everything.
Isabelle: It shines a path for people to walk in at night. It gives off just enough light, and it doesn't burn you. The moon is perfect.
The sailor raised his hands in a mock of surrender.
Sailor: I suppose I can't argue with you Miss.
He turned and descended down the steps and went back to work while Isabelle turned to face the sun again. She sighed as she looked at its beauty. From now on the moon would watch over her and give her the light to see by. The moon would guard and guide her every move. It would give her the light by which she would feast upon her victims with, and it would lighten the path in front of her as her senses were to become stronger and her mortal life fade with the sun where it belonged.
Isabelle: If you are really so fair as everyone says then why do you threaten to destroy all that awakens when darkness falls?
Suddenly she felt the heat of the sun even more than before. First it was just the everyday feeling a normal human being would have as the sun would slightly tan his skin, but then it became fierce and her skin ached all over. Isabelle started walking back to the cabin. It became even fiercer as her skin began to burn now. She started walking toward her cabin faster hoping that nobody would know she was in a hurry. Then just as she couldn't take it anymore she grasped the door handle and quickly pulled it open. She rushed inside and Richard, who was sitting on his bed hissed at her in a low tone.
Richard: Close it! Do you mean to kill us all!?!
Isabelle quickly closed the door behind her and ran to Bain's coffin.
Isabelle: It burns!
Tears were streaming down her face now as Bain slid the lid off his coffin and looked at her.
Bain: Why of course it burns my dear, and if you're not careful and step into a coffin or anyplace were the sunlight can't get you're going to turn to ash completely and all my work would have been for nothing.
Bain ushered Isabelle over to him now and held her in his arms cradling her.
Bain: Promise me you'll never go out into that dreadful sun again.
Isabelle wiped the tears from her face.
Isabelle: I promise Bain.
Bain: Good.
Isabelle felt something in her mouth now, and before she could do anything two of her teeth became unmistakably loose. She reached into her mouth and pulled them out. She looked questionable over at Bain.
Isabelle: Bain?
She held her hand out to him containing the two teeth.
Bain: Your new ones will be growing in soon.
Isabelle: Can I keep them?
Her voice sounded sweet and innocent.
Bain: Yes, my dear you may keep them.
Isabelle quickly ran across the room and placed her two teeth in a bag next to her diary which she had started recently. She sat there now and made a few notes in it, making sure to write with care so that the ink wouldn't go through the other pages. She put it down and took off her coat placing it beside the diary and ran walked back over to Bain yawning.
Bain: Off to bed with you. You'll need your rest for tomorrow night.
Isabelle looked at him questionable.
Isabelle: Why?
Bain: Tomorrow you'll learn how to hunt. Now step inside.
He moved over in the coffin in order to give her some room.
Bain: When we get to the new world we'll go get a coffin especially made for you.
Isabelle slid down next to Bain and put her arms around him.
Bain: Night my child.
He kissed her on the forehead and slid the lid of the coffin over the both of them as she fell asleep in his arms.
The sun no longer a friend of her.
