Isabelle the Diary of a Vampire: Chapter 2 (First Blood)

December 18, 1882, Still Sailing Over the Atlantic Ocean
A vampire's first kill is one of the best experiences one can have. This is the breaking point of remaining forever an innocent child, and becoming the top of the food chain. It determines what path you're going to go down for the rest of your life in eternity on an earthly hell. One can simply kill an animal and remain innocent, or one could take a human life and rid their soul of the earth. I chose the monstrous path. Animals are nothing for me. Besides if I hadn't chosen to kill a human then one would look upon me as an innocent child forever. What I experienced afterward was the most dreadful experience a vampire could have. It made me wonder what was to become of me in this strange and new eternal damned life.

Would I survive or be damned to loneliness?
Chapter 2: First Blood
Isabelle awoke that night and nearly bumped her head on the coffin lid in confusion of where she was. It dawned on her then what had become of her the night before. She had had trouble sleeping that night due to the changes her body was undergoing. Her small, childlike features had undergone a drastic change from her mortal self to the cold blooded kill Bain had turned her into. She slid the coffin lid off, aware that Bain was no longer in the coffin with her. As she sat up she saw two pale faces staring at her.
Bain: So you have awakened my dear. You slept longer then the two of us together, but don't worry that will all change as you age through time.
Isabelle: I thought we would remain forever young.
Bain: We will be, you're body wouldn't undergo change but your mind will. You will gain knowledge no child your age has ever had the chance to know.
Isabelle got up and looked across the room. She could tell her vision had enhanced overnight. She could see from even a distance the small fabric parts from the long, elegant, silk drapes attached to Richard's bed. As she looked across the room she spotted something that gleamed silver in the lamplight and found out it was a mirror.
Isabelle: Bain?
Bain: Yes?
Isabelle: Is it true that we can't be seen in mirrors? I've heard that's how some people can find us.
Bain: Of course not! Just because we're dead doesn't mean our bodies can't be seen!
Richard: That's just some old tale a sailor made up a long time ago in order to fool the people in Europe. It was also rather rude of them to judge something they hadn't even met yet.
Isabelle: It is?
Isabelle was shocked as Richard nodded to her.
Richard: When we found out about it we took care of the guy. He never saw the light of day or felt the calm of night again.
Isabelle: You turned him?
Richard gave out a small laugh.
Richard: Of course not! Why would we turn anyone who seeks to rot us out or fill the world with lies about us? I didn't get a chance to bit him either. Another vampire drained him before I could even so much as lay my hands on the guy.
Isabelle gazed at him in wonder now, taking in everything he was saying.
Isabelle: Sir, you're that old?
Richard: My dear I'm thousands of years older than you. You're generation of vampires wouldn't even come close to the knowledge that I gained.
Isabelle now tried to get back to the point she wanted to get at before.
Isabelle: So this means if I look into that mirror I'm going to be able to see myself?
Richard: Yes, and all the beauty and splendor you hold.
Isabelle got up from the coffin now and began to walk over to the mirror. Its edges were trimmed with gold and silver roses. The silver had slowly begun to turn black making the mirror look even more aged and haunting then anything she'd ever seen before. On the lower edge the mirror seemed to have cracked into a spider web-like shape which ascended to the very center of the mirror. She looked at herself. Her skin had become quite pale. It was almost as white as the dress she was wearing which was still the same dress from the night of the fire. Its burns and holes now stuck out more than ever. They seemed to gleam black against her pale skin. The dress was also rather short now as she noticed, it hung a little past her thighs making her look like an angel of the poor. Her hair which was once dirty blonde and tangled was now straight, untangled and a light colored brown. The two blue-grey eyes starring back at her seemed lifeless and marble-like. When the light reflected off them they seemed demonic, making her look almost evil if it wasn't for her innocent form. She saw the two vampires staring at her reflection from the bed.
Richard: Pretty isn't it?
Isabelle: Yes, it's a little old though.
Richard: I've had it since the time I was turned. It's from the very heart of the desert.
Isabelle found as she talked that in place of the two teeth she lost the night before two new ones had grown in. She found out that they were sharp as a needle as she bit the side of her lip. Blood escaped from the newly made wound and it ran down her pale pink lips and her smooth white skin. Something awakened in her as she caught the scent of her own blood. It brought forth the most wondrous feeling of bloodlust.
Bain: Go out and hunt sweetheart. The sun will be up in a few hours.
Isabelle now turned to Bain.
Isabelle: But why should I hunt so soon?
Bain: We as vampires need blood to survive. We can sleep years without blood, but once we're awake we need it.
Isabelle: But why do we need blood to survive? Why not mortal food?
Bain: As vampires we are already dead. We cannot produce blood on our own and once we awaken our bodies take the blood that we've stored and turn it into energy. Once the blood deceases our energy decreases, and slows us down until we either die or regain the blood we lost by feeding on someone or something else. We cannot eat mortal food because our bodies simply aren't built for that anymore. We are dead.
Isabelle: But what should I hunt?
Bain: You're first time hunting is going to be one of the best things you ever experience. You're victims matter. If you feed only on animals then you're going to be rather dull, and you wouldn't know where your limits lie. Feed on humans and you could have the chance of gaining only the finest of knowledge depending on your victim. I would choose something small though because you haven't quite gained all your features yet. You know what they say though. 'You are what you eat!' Now go my child. Enjoy your first blood.
Bain gestured toward the door and Isabelle nodded and walked over to it. She gave one last look at Bain who was now deep in conversation with Richard and walked outside closing the door behind her. The night was chilly and cold though it didn't bother her. Her senses could feel it, but her body made no sign of reacting against the cold. She looked up into the sky and saw that it was a half moon. The stars glowed bright in the sky as the moon's light seemed to illuminate the ship. She could feel the soft breeze against her skin as she spotted a dark figure in the shadow of the ship's mast. It was the sailor from before.

Isabelle: Well you're up early!
Sailor: I didn't think you would notice me.
Isabelle walked over to him now. She could feel his heart pounding as calm as ever. He didn't seem to be frightened by her at all. She could feel the blood circulating throughout his body as he moved out of the shadows to greet her. An intense feeling of hunger began to rise up inside of her.
Isabelle: You're so calm. I thought I scared you when you when I called to you.
Sailor: The night is calm. The winds seem to favor our ship tonight. It wouldn't be long until we reach shore if the nights continue like this.
Isabelle: Are you saying this only because you're talking to me?
The sailor blushed.
Isabelle: I've heard stories and there's no need to frighten me. I know women are bad luck on board a ship.
Sailor: It's true that they are, but I don't want to frighten you because I like you.
He raised his hand and stroked her cheek with his fingers. Isabelle turned away at his touch and walked over to the side of the boat.
Isabelle: Well there's no need to get used to me. If what you said is true then soon I'll be out of your world.
The sailor was silent and looked at his fingers in confusion.
Sailor: You're so... cold. Like ice.
Isabelle sensed his confusion and the slight hint of fear in his voice.
Isabelle: It's chilly out tonight. Any girl would be cold. I'll be okay though.
The sailor walked over to her and put his coat over her shoulders. He wrapped his arms around her waist. Isabelle felt the hunger inside her grow deeper as she felt his warmth on her dead body.
Sailor: No lady should ever have to suffer the cold. You'll catch ammonia if you don't dress properly.
Isabelle: I'm not who you think I am.
Sailor: Really? Well I think you're as beautiful and fair as the sun.
Isabelle: The moon is fairer then the sun. I am not like the sun. I can't stand the sun.
Sailor: Is that why you ran into your cabin yesterday?
Isabelle: I-I was just feeling a little sick is all.
Sailor: You're feeling better now?
Isabelle: Yes.
Sailor: Why can't you stand the sun?
Isabelle: I'm not like you. I-I used to be.
The sailor turned her around now to face him.
Sailor: Is that so? Well then, fair lady who only cares for the moon I'll show you what it's like to love the sun.
Without warning her slowly lifted her head and brushed his lips gently across hers. He pulled away from her to see her staring at him in wonder and moved in again to kiss her. He pulled away from Isabelle and she laid her heard on his shoulder breathing in his scent. He smelled of the sea and of sunlight unlike the cold air night around them.
Sailor: That, my fair lady, is what it's like to love the sun.
Hunger seemed to take over Isabelle's body as a soft sigh escaped her lips. What happened next was rather unexpected. Isabelle closed her eyes for only a moment and before she knew it her fangs sunk into something soft and tender. The sailor gave a startled cry and Isabelle opened her eyes in horror. Her lips were locked on the sailor's neck and her fangs had sunken into his skin. She wanted to pull away, but something kept her there. She tasted his blood and the hunger inside her rose as she drank the red liquid. It ran down her throat and seemed to warm her body. Finally she pulled away and looked down at the horror she had caused. The sailor, now dead, dropped down on the ship's deck like lead. There was a look of surprise and shock on his face as his dead eyes stared off into the darkness. In the silence she could hear a small squeak coming from a rat hidden somewhere along some ropes. Isabelle's face flushed with color now, for the sailor's blood had warmed her body and made her feel slightly dizzy. She walked back to the cabin now as her body seemed quite abnormal. As she opened the door to the cabin two faces looked at her again.
Richard: Back from hunting? How was your first blood?
Before Isabelle could speak though something hit her hard. She looked around confused and it hit her again this time harder, and she faltered back a few steps. Now she was confused, but whatever it was it wasn't done with her yet as it her a third time. This time she was knocked off her feet. Something seemed to be working its way into her body. Something that didn't quite belong or had left her was making its way around her inner defenses. It set a force down upon her so hard that she began to scream. Bain ran over to her and clasped his hand over to her mouth in order to shush her.
Bain: Do you want to wake the whole ship?
Richard: Leave her alone. We can't help her now. This is Betty's work.
Bain: You mean?
Richard: They found the victim she left outside.
Then as soon as it began, it was over. What it was Isabelle to her knowledge did not know. She sat up and came to realize a very, very cruel thought.
Bain: How was your first blood?
Isabelle: Bain, I-I killed my first love.

And a blood red tear slid down her perfectly white cheek.
