Can you comfort yourself
With the sense of revenge?
Are you leaving me here
With the taste of the end?
"No no no." She shook her head, sagging her shoulders from the weight of her books. "I can't."
"Aw please, Ellie!" He begged, pressing his hands together and trying to keep pace with her.
She stopped turning to him. "Micheal Way, I'm not going out with Frank."
"Damn." He cursed, snapping his fingers. "Why not?"
"Why do you want me to go out with him so bad?"
Mikey shrugged, answering. "He's annoying. And I can't seem to get rid of him."
"Well, you know what? Find him a girlfriend." Mikey looked at her hopefully. "One that isn't me."
"Not even as a favor? Just one date!"
"No Mikey!" She yelled, exasperated. "Listen, I don't think he's any less annoying than you do. I don't want to go out with him. Alright?"
Mikey fell silent, giving up. Ellie stopped in her step, and idea suddenly sparking into her head. "Raymond!"
"Er, what about him?" Mikey asked confused.
She smiled at his confusion, shaking her head. "Not that Raymond. I've got this friend. We should introduce her to Frank. They seem like they'd get along well. That solves your Frank problem. Not to mention puts you in the position of owing me a favor." She tapped her chin. "And I say, that favor is a movie Saturday."
"Can't." Mikey shook his head. "Family stuff." Ellie raised an eyebrow at him, almost commanding him to continue explaining. He sighed. "Gerard's coming home for the summer. I don't think he's getting home until 8 though. Not a huge deal I guess, but lately Mom's been all Judy Cleaverish. Maybe it's because Dad's been staying out more often." He shrugged.
Ellie frowned, looking at him pitifully. Poor Mikey, she thought. All the signs had been there for weeks now. She oughta know, she's been through it. She could tell what Mikey couldn't. They were getting a divorce. It was like watching a trainwreck in slow motion. She hated it. She loved both Donna and Donald. She didn't want to see either of them split up, and definitely didnt want Mikey to be forced to choose between them like she was. "How about we just do dinner then? You said Gerard wasn't getting home until eight. We can eat at six, or seven. I'll make you some Pasta A La Ellie." She crinkled her eyes, smiling at him warmly. "I'll be gone by eight, and you and the fam can have the night to reminisce about the good old days."
"Wait, I thought your mom was gonna be gone?" Mikey asked, feeling a little guilty. Ellie's mom spent a great deal of her time traveling, and when she wasn't doing that. She was 'testing the waters' as she so eloquently put it. Ellie referred to it jokingly as Husband Idol. She'd affectionately nicknamed them Skipper. Because that's what they do. Skip. One night and then they're gone. It's even gotten to the point where Ellie will start singing Just Call Me Angel Of The Morning to them when she first meets them. Mikey didn't really care for Sally too much. He didn't hate her. But Ellie wasn't the best role model, and most of her habits were taken after her mother.
"Yeah." She shrugged. "I don't really know. I'll find something or other to do."
Mikey bit his lip, shuffling his feet around. "I.." He sighed. "I'll talk to mom. Maybe she'll let you stay."
Ellie laughed, waving a hand. "Oh no no. That's alright. I'll call Rachel Elaine or something."
"Rachel..Elaine?"
"Ray?" Ellie blinked. "That friend I told you about earlier. I'll stay with her. Yeah. That works out. I'll talk to her about Frank, convince her to meet him." She winked.
"Alright." Mikey nodded as they reached their respective houses. "Saturday then."
"Saturday!" Ellie called back to Mikey from her porch, waving to him from across the street.
