The pale Florissant lighting within the room shined down upon my paper with no help whatsoever as I stared at my work. Out of twenty-five questions on the exam, I had completed a typical Zero
I taped my pencil on the paper, leaving little specks of gray dusk while trying to figure the first questions. Out of all my subjects, I had to say my lest favorite was chemistry. Though I received hundreds on assignments and homework, surprise quizzes always found a way to mock me with there..surprises.
My eyes looked from the paper to the front, seeing Miss Trooper scanning the class with unblinking, fish eyes, searching for a possible cheater. Despite her cold exterior, she was quite the comedian. She tells jocks about her day and salary, commenting on the occasional lunch food and how it used to be when she was in high school.
Breathing through my nose, I attempt to answer question one. I knew I should have been in IPC, but dad convinced me other wise. At lest you could do more labs and less math involved work in IPC than Chemistry.
From the corner of my eye, I could see the class zooming through this, among them, my friend Sadie was also flying by questions at an amazing speed.
Sadie Hills, a sophomore just like myself, have been friends since the 8th grade. She used to have long wavy black hair back then, but now she had simple short hair with a hint of waves. Her bangs barely went over her ocher eyes and sometimes made her appear mousy since she had such petite features.
Her choice of clothing was an old vintage style, which made her appear to be engulf in her clothing since she wore so much. Sometimes I joked that she was trying to hide her small frame but she just complained and said she wasn't. She's is though, a very beautiful girl since she had high cheeks bones that went along with her heart shaped face. I even envied milky skin that seemed to shimmer every time we went outside.
Sadly, she was tormented back in 8th grade. She was too shy and kept to herself most of the time. The girls who made rumors about her actually turned out to envy the girls looks, and deiced to hurt the poor girl.
My the time we found out who made the rumors, the teacher found the girls with several black eyes and bruises. You could just say I wasn't allowed back in school for a few days.
Sighing, I plopped my head down on the desk. I deiced to just circle in the answers I thought were best before entering snoozeville.
My eyelids were just about close when the bell rang.
Hearing the class suddenly shove their chairs in the desks and the clatter of papers being handed to Miss Trooper, I stand from my set and idly hand her the paper before meeting Sadie outside the room.
"Hey Sadie." I said causally, both of us walking at a medium pace as we headed for lunch. So far, there was one class left for the day and my impatient nerves couldn't wait to hit the hay.
"How have you been dealing with Alicia gone?" Sadie asked with an intrigued tone, her ocher eyes looking over my drained features.
"Pretty good. Except Sherrie directs all the blame towards me now more than ever." I groaned, thinking over yesterday when the Barbie-look-alike pointed the accusing finger toward me.
"What was it this time?" Sadie urged on, while I mused over my memory.
"She accused me of stealing her favorite pink nail polish." I confirmed dully. If I could, I would have thrown that pink nail polish right in Sherrie's face too. Just imagine what apiece of art thought would have been!
"Did you get blamed?" I shook my head at this, my thick main of wavy brown hair moving with the motion.
"Nope. The witch found it a minuet later in her bathroom." My lips curved into a cruel sneer, she didnt even apologize to me after she found that stupid nail polish!
"I think all that tanning fried her brain." Sadie mocked darkly, snickering at her own words. The image of her brain frying was enough to make me laugh with her.
"That explain some things." I said in-between laughs, earning a few awkward stares from by passers in the hall.
"Denis and Edwin said they were going to save us seats in the cafeteria so we wont have to sit outside" Sadie remark beside me, motion with her hand to the round tables that sat in the corner, right next to the huge windows that revealed a very gray sky due to the numerous clouds crunching together.
"Sounds good to me." I grinned when we finally entered the Cafeteria. My hands unconsciously latched onto a tray, placing some food that look somewhat decent before descending to our usual table.
"Hey guys, whose life treating you?" I waved at the gang, seeing that all our friends were either talking with one another or inspecting the food to see if it was edible.
"Not so good." Edwin Gray, a tall, slim boy with sharp cheekbones and sympathetic misty gray eyes sat across from Sadie and I as we took our seats. He pointed to a darker haired boy with the same features but green eyes. They were twins, and very good-looking twins at that.
"What's with Denis?" I asked finally, looking over to Denis who shoved his fork into his food. Unlike Edwin, Denis had a very bad temper.
"He's still upset that you turned him done. Big blow to his ego you know?" Edwin shrugged as Denis grumbled in reply, trying not to look me in the eye.
"Well that doesn't mean he has to mop the whole day." I said dryly, recalling the disastrous question that Denis decided to ask me in the beginning of the week.
He knew that my moods were usually grumpier during the beginning of the week, and he knew that I wasn't practically looking for a boyfriend at the moment.
So knowing all this, he still took the chance and got shot down. Hey, he saw it coming no?
"I told him the exact same thing." Edwin rolled his eyes over to his twin, taking a bite of his deli sandwich. My eyes copied his action before they landed on a dark skinned girl. I smiled brightly before tapping the girl on the shoulder, which automatically made her twist around to face me.
"Well Kasha, how did the volleyball tryouts go?" I questioned, seeing the olive-eyed girl ponder over the thought until I saw her light up like there was an inner glow within her.
"I'm in!" She cried happily, hugging me without thinking. I knew she was excited about it since in World History she wouldn't stop talking about trying out for months.
"Look, look! Isn't that Eric Hanson?" Sara Knight whispered suddenly, making most of the girls in our big group look to where she was pointing.
Only the male population in our table, which consisted of Denis, Edwin, Felix, James and Markus, seemed to mutter under their breaths about the popular junior. I only looked out of curiosity but turned away to face Sadie, a sly smile gracing my lips when I find her eyes staring at the boys figure.
"Sadie its your crush." I whispered to my friend beside me, making her blush and shake her head.
"Oh s-shut u-up." She said softly, stuttering a bit. I knew she liked the boy since we first entered freshman year. Her eyes were instantly glued to him when he walked down the hall the first day of Berlin High School. I never understood why she would like him so much. From what I've seen, he hasn't even made the slightest contact to her.
"Didn't your step-slut go out with him?" I was brought out of my thoughts when Sara's voice came to my ears. I glanced over to see her leaning over the table, waiting for my response.
"Yeah, but she cheated on him with Kevin Copley." I exclaimed tediously, not caring what my stepsister did. It was expected of her to cheat on men. Shes done it about fifteen times in one year already!
"How could someone cheat on that?" Skyler Hasher remarked, emphasizing on the word that as she stared dreamily over to Eric's table. She wasn't the only girl staring either, about thirty different colors and shades of eyes were locked on the table, all full of lust and longing.
"Dont ask me. I could care less about the all popular Eric whats-his-face." I stated, stabbing my steak as it tried to move. I swear this food doesnt die easily.
"Why dont you like him? All the girls practically faint when he looks their way or says 'hi'?" Tessa Vinter, a foreign exchange student from Germany asks through her thick accent, her pure blond, milky white hair washed over her shoulder while her height reached a grand 5,8. She had stunning bluish green eyes that reflected her emotions that glowed around her perfect face. Though she had plenty of chances with boys, she surprisingly denies them all.
"He just seems fake." I said innocently, my brown orbs looking over to Erics table with a wearily gaze. I could see he was having a rather enjoyable conversation, since his lips were parted as he shoved on of his friends away from him, laughing along to some joke that went unheard to me. From my view, I could also see his hazel eyes and black locks seemed to glow.
I remembered when the girls prompted him the most handsome and compassionate boy in the school. God, was I the only one here who thought that was a lie?
My eyes narrowed in disgust when I spotted Sherrie creeping over to him, making sure to bend her chest right in his face as she flirted with him. Her choice of clothing for today was a skimpy black and white poke-a-dotted skirt with a pink halter-top that just hardly covered her exposed cleavage. One word was enough to sum up my entire observation, puke-educing.
"Everything seems fake to you." I caught Anna Crest mumble under her breath, a hint of revulsion crossing her tongue. I didnt take to kindly to her comment when I answered back with a sharp reply.
"When you live with Sherrie ThornBush, you cant help knowing everything is a fantastic plastic." I said in a matter-of-fact tone, giving the vulgar girl a warning glare. If theres one thing I didnt take, it was intolerance of others opinions, something that Anna had master since birth.
For the next 20 minutes we sat there, either eating or chatting amongst ourselves. By the time the bell range, I was fed up with Annas comments on life as she tried to explain her daily life style. All I got from it was dull, dull, and DULL.
"Well theres the bell." I said thankfully, feeling Deniss eyes boring holes on my right side. I also was grateful for my long hair blocking my right vision while placing my food in a near by garbage can.
"See ya all later!" I called, waving my hand to the dispersing group. Sadie was the only one whom stayed by my side when we left the Cafeteria.
"Your still going to call me right?" I heard her ask, gathering her books within her tiny grasp. I couldnt help but think she was like mini mouse when she slightly dusted off her red dress shirt.
"Of course." I nodded and started heading off to my last class, waving as I drifted from her. Even though Lunch had passed, and the boy was probably on the other side of the school, one name stuck in my head throughout the class period.
Eric Hanson.
------
The drive home was one of exhaustion that was filled with the ear piercing giggles that erupted from the bawls of Sherries throat as she did her non-stop talking routine on her ultra expensive phone that she BEGGED my father to buy her for Christmas.
Knowing her, it was Chloe whom she was talking too, and god if I could I would have grabbed that phone and chucked it out the window were it be smashed to bits by the cars traveling behind us.
Lifting my eyes to the window beside me, I try to block out the noises that caused my ears to practically bleed. The oak trees were so beautiful, standing tall with their colorful leaves that swayed in the light breeze, nothing seeming to ruin their day. Below them, their leaves cluttered the streets and roots while wild flowers of different sorts were slowly fading due to the oncoming winter.
Just when I had finally tuned out Sherries annoying voice, my dad had to be the one who brought me back to reality.
"Damn it!"I heard him slam his hand down, startling both Sherrie and me. I almost couldnt hold back a snicker when she nearly dropped her phone out the window.
"What's wrong dad?" I asked through my twitching lips, struggling to contain my smile as he gave a frustrated sigh.
"I forgot that Isabella wanted me to buy her some water..but we already passed the grocery store. He muttered dryly, glancing back a few blocks were the grocery store slowly faded back from behind. I shook my head, resting back into my seat until I remember something.
"Theres a Circle K just up the road." I pointed idly, revealing the white and red sign that held the 'Circle K' logo.
"Do you mind if you run into the store and buy the water for me?" He pulled out a 10-dollar bill, which I took indolently and shoved it into my pocket as we turned into the gas station.
"No problem. I doubt theres anyone else that do the job." I directed my attention to Sherrie, which she was oblivious to since her phone seemed to be her lifeline at the moment.
Dad didn't notice either though, or at lest pretended not to. He likes to act our hate toward each other is another way for us to bond, but as you can see, that's not going to ever happen. Not till one of us is dead at lest.
"Hurry ok? I promised her Id be back in time to take her to dinner!" He called when I stuck my legs into the cool air, grabbing my own phone in the process incase anyone would call.
"On it." I slammed the door shut and quickly headed to the double doors. The inside was pretty clean while the cashier greeted me with a full smile. I retuned the kindness and preceded to the back, were the water usually should be.
'Water..water..Ah water!' Grabbing a few bottles of water from the shelves, I turn to head to the counter but find my face slammed into a chest that stood rather too close.
"Watch were you're going!" I hissed, forgetting the conmen rule to be polite but through the annoying chatter in the car and day my manners seemed to have ran off.
"Well Miss Shorty, I would but I didnt see you coming." The male's voice said sincerely, yet I caught the hint of aggravation behind it. My eyes widen and gradually lifted to see what I had dreaded to face.
Oh..who might you be?
Hazel eyes, black locks..
Two words crossed my hazed mind at that moment.
Eric Hanson
