Jamie looked up from her abandoned shot. There were four or five glasses around her newest one, the one she didn't want to consume, the one that looked so tempting. Amanda sat down next to the girl, worried about her friend.
"Jamie," Amanda whispered, her voice piercing Jamie's ears and worsening her constant headache, "what are you doing here?"
Jamie looked up, rolling her eyes. "Why wouldn't I be here?"
Amanda rolled her eyes back at her friend. "Maybe because you're supposed to be at Brendon's. I'm here because he was going crazy with you. It's his birthday, Jae, you can't just not be there."
"Obviously I can." Jamie's voice was loud and harsh, causing a hush to spread over the bar. Eyes fell on the two us they glared at each other. Amanda, in one swift movement grabbed Jamie's wrist and pulled her out of the bar, Jamie mumbling drunken protests to herself.
The cold air quickly awakened Jamie's senses as the entered the outside world. She removed her wrist from Amanda's grasp. "What's your problem?" she yelled.
"What's my problem?" Amanda yelled, her hands in her air, threatening to pull it out. "You ditched Brendon's birthday to go get drunk. Brendon! Your best friend since high school. You know, the guy you hadn't seen for ages."
"Exactly! I haven't seen him for ages. He's no best friend of mine." Tears slowly feel down Jamie's cheeks as she stared at the dirt ground below her. She whipped away her tears with the edge of her yellow jacket.
Noticing her friend's tears, Amanda rushed over and enveloped her in a hug. Jamie quickly brushed the hug off and said, laughter in every word, "Gah, I am just such a loser. No wonder Brendon left."
Amanda looked her friend, lifting her face so that they were looking into each other's eyes. "He left for music. He never ever would have left to get away from you."
Jamie just shook her head. "I know why he left," was all she said. Amanda opened her mouth to say something, but Jamie cut her off with, "If I go, can we just pretend this never happened?"
Amanda nodded somberly. The two walked over to Amanda's car and got in, Amanda helping Jamie walk while she was in her drunken stupor. It wasn't long until they arrived at Brendon's party. Amanda pulled Jamie slightly forcefully out of the car and inside.
The second Jamie stepped into the room, Spencer gave her the largest hug ever. "Thank God you're here," he said. "Brendon was going crazy without you. He didn't want to eat cake or do anything until you were here." Spencer let here go and then yelled, loud enough for everyone hear, "Jamie's here!"
Brendon was soon at her side, smothering her in the biggest hug ever. "I was so afraid you weren't coming."
Jamie didn't say anything, just smiled up at the "best friend" she hadn't seen in years.
Taking in her lack of words, Brendon said, "Let us eat cake then."
Cheers erupted from everyone that heard Brendon. They all rushed over to the cake, Brendon pulling Jamie in his stead. They arrived and Ryan began to cut the cake, no one trusting Brendon with a knife.
"You know what we should do?" Brendon said to Jamie. "We should totally stuff cake into each other's faces.
"That's what they do at weddings," Jamie said, wondering if Brendon was trying to imply something.
"I know," Brendon said, a smile creeping onto his face.
"Wait," Jamie said, "we didn't get married without me knowing, did we?"
Brendon laughed. "Of course not! Could you imagine that? I mean, just simply dating you would be extremely awkward."
At that, Jamie's heart sunk. "Oh, yeah," she said, trying to sound as happy as she could. She knew it didn't work well, yet Brendon paid no notice. He just took a piece of cake, motioning for Jamie to grab one herself. She did. They then mashed the cake into each other's face, smiling at how stupid the other looked with cake on their face.
They ran off to the bathrooms to wash the excess cake off their faces. Jamie, although she wanted to be happy, couldn't help but think of Brendon's leaving or what he had said only moments before about how the two of them would be awkward together.
Awkward. That's all she ever was. Because she was born with her left leg shorter than the other, her walking was always awkward. Her hair that would go every which way and could never be managed was awkward. She always said the wrong thing, leading her into more awkward silences in a week than most had in a month. Awkward, awkward, awkward.
"You all right?" Brendon asked, looking at Jamie with concern. It seemed to him as if she was crying, but he couldn't tell for sure if it was tears or excess water from washing their faces.
Jamie way to fast smiled up at him and said way too high pitched "Of course I am."
"Really?" he asked, pulling her into a hug. Jamie didn't say anything, just wanting to stay in the position. She had missed her friend so much. She had missed how tight his hugs were or how he always smelt like fresh brewed coffee. There were so many things that she missed. But there was only one reason why.
"I love you," she spoke.
Brendon smiled and laughed. "I know, Jae. We are best friends, right?"
Jamie pushed herself out of the hug, shaking her head 'no.' "Brendon, I What I mean is I think, um, I'm in love with you."
Brendon's eyes quickly drifted to the ground, avoiding her gaze and the look of her sad, hazel eyes in the mirror. While looking at the ground, he noticed a lucky penny residing there. He bent down to pick it up. Ryan had told him once that if you have a wish in mind while you pick it up, the luck will go towards making the wish come true.
But Brendon wasn't thinking of a wish when he picked it up. He was simply thinking of Jamie. His wonderful best friend, Jamie. Thinking quickly, he put the penny back down on the floor, face up.
He looked at Jamie and smiled. "Lucky penny," he stated, pointing at it. Jamie nodded. "Why don't you pick it up? Just make sure you have a wish in mind when you do, just like Ryan would always say."
Jamie gave him a strange look. She didn't understand what a stupid penny had to do with her telling him she loved him. Or the fact that that the penny would soon be used back at the same bar, buying her more drinks to drowned herself in. It didn't have anything to do with why he left or why she cared so much. She picked it up anyways. Simply because Brendon asked her to. She even thought of a wish as she did.
Only seconds after she was fully erect, penny in hand, Brendon practically bounced over to her, placing his lips on hers so perfectly. Once they parted, Jamie said, "What was that for?" before she had a chance to realize what she was asking.
"I thought I'd help out that lucky penny with making your wish come true."
Jamie smiled, biting her lip. "How do you know you had anything to do with my wish?"
"Because I'm all anyone everyone ever wishes for." Jamie laughed. As Brendon leaned in to kiss her again, Jamie couldn't help but hold tight onto her luckiest penny, the one that would never have to be spent on some cheap alcohol. Brendon was better than any alcohol buzz could ever be.
