Jackie woke up the next morning more exhausted than when she had gone to sleep. Her slumber had been full of old memories and bright lights, not really something to rest to. Her hair felt thick and greasy in her hands, as she pulled it out of her face. She grimaced at the feeling under her fingers as she pulled her knees up, and placed her chin on top, falling back onto the cushions.
Corey stalked out, his long legs adorned in dark denim under a cherry red jacket. He glanced over at her offhandedly, taking in her appearance and wrinkling his nose. She doe fully looked up at him, biting her lip, expecting the worst.
"We have a shower." He stated, raising his eyebrows and jerking his thumb to the back of the bus. Corey wasnt a morning person.
She stumbled out of the room, indenting her teeth to her lip almost permanently.
After a cold shower she was back in the same place, her hair dripping dry against her back, Corey had left, there was nobody on the bus and she was too scared to venture out, let alone call for someone. So she sat shivering in the air conditioned air and curtained windows.
Her eyes were just starting to slide shut when a blonde head popped out of the metal door, a broad boyish smile was displayed on the slightly unshaved yet still clean face of Ollie.
"Hey, the band's going to Denny's wanna come?" His teeth were bright and white, despite their slightly crooked appearance. She couldnt help comparing them to Corey's perfectly straight top row, but he had had braces so it wasnt quite fair.
Not 5 minutes later she was crushed in the back of their van, wedged between Seth and Ollie, Mom (or Jeff as she had later learned) was driving, occasionally yelling back at the boys to not argue. They were all like children, bickering over the silliest things.
Her ride went fast, as she had hoped, but even then she had a headache and she was sure that Seth had not showered that morning. She shuddered at the thought of the ride back.
As they all tumbled out in a disarray of legs, arms and other extremities, her ears were assaulted by a van screeching to a halt, not ten feet in front of them. Corey was seen laughing in the passenger side.
"You DULT!" Steve-o yelled, mock glaring at the smiling boy.
"Dude, we could have like died" Seth added, shaking his head in shock, Seth didnt seem like the smartest of the bunch.
The group then proceeded into the fluorescent lighting of Denny's and the scrumptious pancakes they were so revered as.
As the waitress with the flat hair and even flatter chest walked them to their not so flat table, Jackie realized something.
She had to sit. But where?. Her feet slowed, and her head bowed, as she tried to stray from the group. But of course it couldnt be as easy as that.
Corey threw one heavy arm around her shoulders before shooting her a knowing look.
"Hey guys we're gonna go wash our hands." He called spinning them around.
"Wash your hands?" Ollie questioned crinkling his nose.
"Yeah." Corey called, pointing to Jackie "She's a girl."
There was a collective agreement of 'oh's and 'I forgot's from the group. Corey led her out of the seating area and when she tried to turn right to the bathrooms he was pulling her arm left.
The doors opened with gust of air leading them out of the boisterous restaurant. Jackie was still blurry eyed like she was half asleep. She practically clung to his soft hand, her own palm clammy.
He led them a short way, his heels clicked as he turned to her. His smile was bright and slightly crooked. His eyes were the brightest shade of them all and he didnt seem to notice.
"I needed to talk to you." He said abruptly, always cutting to the chase, Corey didnt round corners, he hopped fences.
"Alone." He added, his eyes crinkling a little more.
She nodded, her chin bobbing up and down, her hair flying in her eyes, she didnt pay any attention to it.
"See this." He motioned to their fingers still interlocked, she looked down clumsily blushing, letting go. He still grasped her now limp hand.
"Let's keep this. . .uh. . ." He looked around, biting his lip. "Ours?" His other lip went to join the first. "I mean- lets not let. . . no that sounds wrong." A car passed, there was gum on the ground along with a green penny.
"Lets keep it a secret- 'kay?" He finished lamely. One of her eyebrows rose in a quiet disbelief, but his lips were the best candy.
"Okay."
