"Enter," a male voice commanded.
Sasori opened the thick wood door that lead into the akatsuki leader's office, and the three of us stepped into the dimly lit room.
"We brought the girl," Sasori stated boredly.
Leader looked up from his paperwork, his spikey orange hair swaying slightly from the motion, his strange blue-grey eyes studying me. After a moment he replied.
"We will test you're abilities to be sure that you are worthy of joining. You'll be going up against Itachi."
My eyes widened. I had heard about Itachi, about the massacre of the Uchiha clan. Was this guy serious? I didn't stand a chance against Itachi!
"Umm, sir?" I asked nervously.
"Hmm?"
"Do I have to fight Itachi? I-I wouldn't stand a chance."
"There's nothing to worry about. I'll be watching the whole thing, and I'll stop the fight if he goes too far. You'll be fine."
I still didn't feel very sure, but nodded my head in understanding anyway.
"For now, though, Deidara will keep an eye on you while we wait for Itachi and his partner Kisame to return from their mission."
"Hai, un," Deidara said.
"You're dismissed."
We bowed in respect and filed out the door. Sasori immediately shot off somewhere, leaving Deidara and I standing in the dim hallway.
"Come on, hmm," Deidara saide to me, walking away.
I followed him through winding hallways until we emerged in a brightly lit living room with a couch, T.V., recliner, and a coffee table. The two I had seen from before were sitting on the couch watching the discovery channel. Deidara joined them on the couch, but I just stood awkwardly in the doorway.
Deidara looked at me then laughed. "Well don't be shy! Have a seat, un!"
He patted the seat next to him.
"Uhh...ok."
I walked over to the seat he was patting and sat down. He smiled with satisfaction then turned to face the white haired man.
"Did you finish you mission Hidan-san?"
"Yeah. It took way longer than it should of though, thanks to her and her partner."
The one named Hidan nodded in my direction.
"What happened to Kakashi-san? Is he alright?" I asked frantically.
"Unfortunately, yes. The lucky bastard got away after we killed our guy."
I was relieved Kakashi was ok, but my heart sank at the last part of the sentence. So he had failed the mission, and it was mostly my fault. If only I had been there to help him...
I sighed loudly, my mood worsening. What a suckish day. Suddenly, my stomach growled ferociously and everyone looked at me. My face reddened as I wrapped my arms around my midsection, trying to quiet the grumbles of hunger.
"Are you hungry, un?"
I could see Hidan giving Deidara a "WTF of course she's hungry" look behind his back.
"N-no," I lied.
My stomach grumbled again, giving me away. Deidara looked at me, disagreement clear on his feminine features.
"Let's get you something to eat, hmm."
He got up and I followed him to the colorful kitchen located to our left.
"Now that I think about it, I'm kinda hungry too. I'll make us some ramen!"
"Do you want any help?" I offered.
"Nah. You can just take a seat at the table. It'll be done in no time, hmm."
He gave me a big smile then turned to start boiling some water. While waiting for the water to boil, he sat down across from me and started asking questions.
"So what do you like to do for fun, un?"
"Write stories."
"Cool. I like to make clay sculptures then blow them up to create art. Sasori no Danna's always insulting me though and saying that my exploding sculptures aren't art and that his puppets are because they're everlasting. He's wrong though, because art is quick and fleeting, hmm," he rambled.
I giggled as he mimicked his Danna, making silly faces and motions. We both laughed.
"Can you show me some of your exploding sculptures?" I inquired.
"Sure! Right after we eat," he replied enthusiastically, bouncing in his chair then hopping up to put the noodles in the boiling water. He returned to his seat to wait out the remaining three minutes.
"Jeez, already seven o'clock. I don't think you'll have to face Itachi-san until tomorrow. You can sleep in my room if you want, hmm," he offered.
"O-ok! Thanks!"
Even though I wasn't going to sleep, it wouldn't hurt to just lie down and think all night. Before long, the smell of ramen wafted around the kitchen, sending my stomach into a fit of growls. Deidara go up and made us each a bowl of the delicious noodles. We slurped them up happily, glad to finally be rid of our hunger.
"Yum!" he exclaimed.
I smiled and nodded in agreement. We hurriedly washed our dishes and ran outside so he could show me his exploding sculptures. He dug his hands into a bag of clay and mashed the clay up, producing two amazingly detailed bird sculptures. He threw them high into the air, where they started to flit about, brought two fingers up to his mouth, then yelled,"Katsu!"
The birds exploded into brilliant shades of red, orange, and yellow that lit up the filed we were standing in and the evening sky above our heads, filling me with awe.
"That was beautiful," I whispered in amazement.
I turned and met his gaze. His visible eye was sparkling with delight and he was smiling dreamily. He looked really cute.
"Yeah, it was, un."
I blushed when I realized he was still looking at me and looked down at the grass.
"Uhh, so, how come your Danna says they're not art? Just because they're not everlasting..." I looked back up at him. "...doesn't mean they're not art. I think they're amazing!"
To my surprise, he blushed ever so slightly before responding.
"Th-thanks! You're the only one who seems to appreciate them, hmm. As for Sasori no Danna, he's just too stubborn to see it my way," he said, sounding a little disheartened.
"Well, aren't you also too stubborn to see it his way? You both have the same problem."
He considered it for a moment, then waved it off.
"Pfft. Whatever. Let's just head back inside. I'll show you my room, un," he replied while grabbing my hand and pulling me along.
I shivered as I felt something wet on my hand. He must have felt me shiver because he turned and looked at me.
"Are you cold, un?"
"No, I think something licked my hand."
His eye widened and he let go of my hand, his face turning a deep red. He raised his hands and showed me the mouths on the palms.
"Sorry about that, yeah."
I gently grabbed one of his hands and looked at it curiously, my index finger lightly tracing over the mouth. This time, it was his turn to shiver.
"How come you have mouths on your palms?" I inquired, cocking my head to side.
He shrugged his shoulders. "I dunno. I was just born with 'em, un."
We slowly made our way back to the base, talking about random things. When we got there, I saw two members I had never seen before; one was what appeared to be a tall blue shark, and the other had black hair in a low ponytail and onyx eyes. My heart nearly stopped when the black haired man's gaze met mine. So this was Itachi. I was filled to the brim with dread at the thought of having to fight him, his cold stare alone enough to make someone think twice about messing with him, much less his skill as a shinobi. I quickly looked away and followed Deidara to his room, my hands shaking slightly. I was so gonna die tomorrow.
