Church camp - kids camp
The first part of campThe first part of camp was the most tiring. At first we were all pumped about being counselors and sowing seeds for Christ, and we still were later on we were just anticipating the END of camp a lot more.
I was working in the craft room in the mornings after the worship service other than that I was a relief counselor to Carrie, a friend in my youth group, and Sindy, one of the Floridians. Mostly we were escorting the kids to the bathroom and nurse. However, in just about all of my down time I was sketching portraits for well near all of the girls, not just the ones in my groups. One of the girls from my church Lindsey asked for one and after that more and more girls saw it and want one. Carrie and Sindy felt so bad for me. They were certain my hand was about to fall off.
Carrie and I were asked to lead a Bible study with the kids. Carrie has a fear of public speaking and I’m not the best at it. The lesson was about Jesus being the one and ONLY way to heaven. As nervous as we were God really spoke through us and we were able to answer all the questions the kids asked. After that we were so elated that when we were heading for the basketball court we saw Dennis (our youth pastor) and excited told him all about it. Later on when out kids were getting their awards for the games. Carrie was having trouble working up the enthusiasm in front of some 100 people so Dennis say “Oh if you want to hear about excitement…” and proceed to tell him about our joy about finding out we are good teachers.
As energetically deflating (yeah I felt like I was using the words exhausting and tiring too much) as kids camp was camp was I had a great time and I even got to see some kids ask Jesus into their hearts. Even the portraits weren’t so bad it, and it’s adorable to see how attached the little kids get to you. One little girl was clinging to my arm so hard on the last day my hand actually went numb! I’m really glad we were able to pull off this camp, and it was free at that, it was a really powerful experience for everyone involved and I hope everyone who was there will be impacted by it in some way.
