A drug or alcohol relapse is not an independent occurance or event.
An alcohol or drug relapse is a process, amovement of ideas and events that activate the concept of being unable to deal with abstinence. The relapse process may lead to a return to alcohol and drug use, emotional or physical collapse, suicide or accidental death.
The progress is identified by substantive, predictable and identifiable relapse warning signs that begin quite some time before a return to use or collapse occurs. Relapse prevention planning teaches people to identify and create plans to manage these symptoms and signs. The goal is to interrupt the development early in the process and return to the path of recovery.
An alcohol or drug relapse , emphatically does not have to be a part of sobriety, there are people who do not re-engage in drugging and drinking. Research of life-long history of recovery and relapse indicate that not all patients relapse. Approximately one third gain permanent abstinence from their first serious attempt at sobriety. Another third have a period of brief relapse episodes but eventually achieve long-term sobriety. An additional one third have chronic relapses that result in eventual death from drug or alcohol use.
These statistics are consistent with the life-long recovery rates of any chronic lifestyle-related illness. About half of all relapse-prone people eventually achieve permanent sobriety. Many others lead healthier, more stable lives despite occasional relapse incidences.
