Dimitri bared elongated fangs and hissed. His eyes got colder, his skin glowed, he was pissed. Thomas pushed me behind him, the quick movement caused the wound in my belly to send little bolts of pain through me.

Thomas’s nails had curved into sharp claws, his own canines were larger than usual and his eyes glowed wolf gray.

My mind raced, I only knew that I had to stop them but I didn’t know how.

“I am going to kill you mongrel.” Dimitri hissed. Shit.

“Try it fang-face.” Thomas countered. Shit, I couldn’t just sit by like a helpless human girl. I had to do something. I closed my eyes. Floren and I had been practicing magic as much as possible. I was learning quickly. I didn’t know everything, but Floren told me that all I had to do was want it. It helped if I knew how to do something and how much power it would take, but in a tight situation, all I needed to do was want what I truly needed.

With eyes closed I took a deep breath. The scent of werewolf, vampire and demon assaulted me. Phantom servants had also joined the fray. Not many, but enough that I could sense the demon worry.

I felt Callum somewhere in the fray. He was angry and fighting with more skill than any of the teenage vampires. It would be harder for him to keep his secret now.

I took one more deep breath and everything slowed down. I opened my eyes and watched as people battled.

Then, I willed it all to stop. I had no idea how much magic it would take to stop time, but I did it. Everything froze like in a bad special effects movie. This was real though. It was all real.

In the back of my mind I noted the pull that had had on my body, and I knew it would cost me, but I put it to the back of my mind and started thinking again. I had no idea what I would do now that everything was frozen, but it gave me time to think.

“Kira.” Floren’s voice echoed eerily in the stillness. I turned to him.

“I didn’t know what else to do.” I blurted out. He strode over to me quickly and wrapped me into a hug.

“I figured out what was happening from your mind. I know everything, even what Callum told you.” He said. I buried my face in his jacket.

“Once again this is all my fault. I have to stop this Floren. It isn’t my fault demons attacked, but if they hadn’t everyone still would have died. I’ve been running on nothing lately. I haven’t felt anything. I haven’t felt sad, or remorseful, nothing. I do now though, and it’s killing me. I liked it better when I didn’t feel at all.” My voice was quiet. Floren pulled away and looked at my face.

“It may have been easier love, but no one can really be alive if they don’t feel anything Kira. You would have wasted away inside until you were naught but a shell. You don’t want that to happen and I won’t let it. It may be hard to love, or to be sad, but it’s what we are supposed to do, it’s how we know we’re alive.” Floren said intensely. His eyes stayed totally focused on mine.

“So what do we do? I stopped time, but how will this help?” I asked, “And even if all the demons are defeated, the werewolves and vampires will still turn on each other.” I said. Then I detected something that hadn’t been there a second ago. It was a moving presence.

“I might be able to help.” A voice said. Floren and I both turned quickly to face the person, and I wasn’t expecting what I saw. She was about 5’8, very thin with subtle curves, straight brown hair that hung just to her shoulder blades. She had close set eyes, a mouth that was on the smaller side with a pouting lower lip. Her nose was just a little to big for her face. Her chin was a subtle round point, her face was narrow but oval shaped. She was pretty in an odd way. It wasn’t the pretty that made a person stop and crash their cars, but it was something. She was by no means plain, she had a grim set to her mouth and hard eyes. Her makeup was simple, light black eyeliner only on the top lids and thick mascara that brought out startling grey-blue eyes. Her skin was a light golden olive color, very pretty skin. Her hands were slim and long, elegant pianist hands. She also looked no more than 17.

I didn’t immediately like her. Some people have the looks that immediately draws people to them. This girl was more of a mystery. She was someone who made people wonder, but not get too close.

“Who are you?” Floren asked. She smiled. The smile made her seem more real, less of a mysterious illusion. It broke up her face. She was not very pretty when she smiled, it made her face look odd, but it humanized her. I noticed her teeth were very little, but her canines were longer than a normal person, almost like a vampire, but I could tell she wasn’t one.

“I’m someone who may be able to make the werewolves and vampires get over themselves and work together for a change. They don’t know that the demons have killed the vampire king tonight, they killed him and are planning on wiping out everyone close to the throne, then taking over. Humans don’t know about demons, and if they happen to take over, they will not abide by human laws. Demons hate humans and wish to see them dead or enslaved and that is not the future I want, so I have chose to come into the light and get them to work together.”

“And why do you think you can convince them to do anything?” I asked. Floren narrowed his eyes. Then they widened.

“This is impossible.” He said quietly. She grinned. Her grin was better than her normal smile. It lit up her face.

“What is?” I asked, confused.

“I am the only half breed in existence. I am part werewolf, part vampire. I am the first and only of my kind.” She said. I raised my eyebrows, shocked.

“That isn’t possible. The genes cancel each other out. Werewolves and vampires cannot successfully breed, and if a person is bitten by both, they simply die. This has never been possible.” I said.

“No, it is only possible for me. My mother was a werewolf and also a witch, my father was a vampire. When I was conceived my mother cast a spell to bind the two genes together. It took a fair amount of magic and she ended up dying, but I was born healthy. I am not bound by the moon, but I can change at will, I have vampiric speed, but am not allergic to the sun. Being a witch makes it so that silver does not harm me.”

“So you think you can help?” I asked, getting the conversation back on subject.

“yes I think I can, I have the best of both worlds and I have a good amount of power. I think I can help, but first,” She looked at Thomas and Dimitri, frozen, ready to attack the other, “we need to take care of them. You obviously care for them both, so,” She strode over. Her walk was graceful, but at the same time not. It was odd.

The girl Gripped Thomas’s frozen arms and turned him facing a large marble column. Then she turned Dimitri facing a wall. They were both mid leap.

The girl smiled to herself.

“That should knock some sense into them.” She said, then laughed loudly.

“What’s you name, and how old are you?” I asked.

“My name is Micah,” pronounced mee-cuh, “I’m nine-hundred and fourteen years old. I‘m going to break your hold on time now.” She said. For a moment or two I just stared at her, then she let it go.

Thomas crashed into the large column, cracking it, and Dimitri crashed into a wall, leaving a formidable dent. They both looked totally confused, then their eyes landed on Floren, me, and Micah.

“What the frack just happened?” Thomas growled. Micah stepped forward. She looked a little out of place in her dark jeans and purple camisole.

“Well it was her fault for stopping time, but I moved you.” She said. That reminded me that I had used a lot of magic, and I felt a little woozy.

Dimitri looked at the girl for a moment, and his face showed more shock on it than I had ever seen him express.

“Micah? Why in the world are you here?” He asked. She grinned.

“Well I have been asked to intervene. Things are changing Dimitri. Once the demons are gone I will make an announcement. Thomas,” She turned to the werewolf. He looked at her with an awed respect, “you are the most powerful werewolf in the room right now, and Dimitri, though you are not the highest royal, you have the most power. Once the demons have been driving away, I am charging you both with keeping the rest of your kind from killing each other. If you kill each other now, you are no use to me.” She said. They both nodded.

“we will refrain.” Dimitri said grudgingly, glaring at Thomas.

“Good. Now, let us finish this battle quicker so that I can get on with it.” Then before I could really comprehend what was going on, she leapt onto the back of an eight foot demon with orange scaly skin and horns rising high above his head. She ripped his head of, then in one fluid move she threw a dark mass of energy into another one.

The demon she hit shrieked, his body engulfed in a black fire, then he simply vanished. It was amazing.

At some unspoken command, all the demons fled. Left behind was gore. Dead demons were strewn among dead vampires and werewolves. The elegant finery worn by royals was spattered with blood. Injured lay everywhere, yet there was very little sorrow. Most were caught up in the blood lust.

Micah stretched her arms above her head and stretched.

“well now that that is done,” She said to herself.

“Attention all. My name is Micah, representative of both the werewolf and vampire courts. I have important news that you all must hear.” She said. Her voice was loud and rang through the suddenly quiet room. People whispered to each other. Apparently Micah was well known. She waited, until the whispers stopped.

“The vampire king has been assassinated by the demons earlier this night. I have come to inform you all that no king will take his place. There has been a ruling, the king himself had been putting it in place. The werewolves and vampires will not have a monarch, there will be two separate councils for each. They have already worked together to draw up laws. The council has ruled that there will be no fighting between vampires and werewolves, and any to break this new peace will be tried and executed. Also, the next in line to the vampire throne, the last surviving Skimmer, will be heading up the vampire council, and the son of Nikolas will be the head of the werewolf council. Negotiations for territory and other things will comence soon, and those chosen for the councils will be notified immediately.” Her voice was loud, clear, and she spoke through the shocked murmurs and surprised cries that rang out through the crowd.

Then everyone started to speak at once, demanding answers.

I watchedMicah speak, then started to space out. I was just so tired. Stopping time had taken a lot of magic and it was starting to wear on me.

I looked around the room, myeyes losing focus, then my knees buckled.
