An Introduction to Acne Rosacea

sasas.JPGosacea is a common, but often overlooked, skin condition of uncertain etiology that can lead to significant facial disfigurement, ocular complications, and severe emotional distress. The progression of rosacea is variable; however, typical stages include: (1) facial flushing, (2) erythema and/or edema and ocular symptoms, (3) papules and pustules, and (4) rhinophyma. Rosacea is most common in women and people with fair skin. It usually starts between age 30 and 60. Rosacea is usually described as being most common in fair skinned women over 40. The purpose of the study is to determine whether oral Zinc Sulfate treatment is an effective treatment for facial rosacea.
Rosacea and acne Vulgaris
Rosacea is much less well diagnosed than acne vulgaris, a frequent misconception being that the red face of Rosacea sufferers is mistaken for acne or due to a “healthy” outdoor complexion or worse, and very insulting for many, alcohol abuse. Many people see their Doctors for years with other complaints, without rosacea being diagnosed. Rosacea is a skin condition that mimics acne. Red blotches appear in the T-Zone, chin, nose, cheeks, and forehead, and can appear to be quite bumpy and irritated. Rosacea is completely unrelated to poor hygiene; in fact, use of cleansers or other skin-care products containing irritating ingredients may trigger flare-ups.
Ocular rosacea
Rosacea is a systemic disease. There is no study that shows a long-term benefit of topical treatment alone. Rosacea is not a short-term disorder. It's a chronic condition that can seem to disappear for months or even years before another flare-up. Rosacea is an enigmatic disease with multiple exacerbations and remissions, and, unfortunately, treatment is directed toward symptomatic control rather than cure. Ocular rosacea can manifest as minor ocular irritation or severe corneal compromise; thus, medical therapy is chosen based on the severity of presentation.
