Hellion Masquerade [8]
Lovely reviews and ratings would be... smashing (yes yet again I use that word! Deal with it!)! Joshy boy is in this chapter ;]! And yeah... I'm going to IMAX tomorrow to see the Dark Knight with one of my friends! YES! So I hoping it will help me with writing the Joker's character. Remember to go and read both of bleadinghearts's and CaptainSweeneyToddett's Joker stories. They're AMAZING!I roll over onto my back feeling my soft cushiony bed beneath me. Funny, I sit up looking around groggily; I remember falling asleep on the bathroom floor crying my eyes out. But Harley probably moved me… or the Joker seeing as Harley was shorted than me… well she probably could have moved me because she looked athletic.
I feel something tug on my tangled hair pulling my back down.
“Ugh.” I let out a huff of air landing on the Joker’s chest. I can hear his heart beating in my ear and his hand moves to my head not allowing me to get up.
“P-please let me go.” I beg pushing against him.
“Just wanting to say good morning angel.” He rolls over wrapping his arms around me and bringing me close. “You go back to work today.”
Finally, is the only word I can think of, after a week without work and the only thing my mind was able to think about was the Joker, I really couldn’t wait to go back to work.
His lips brush against mine and I immediately pull away from him. Laughing he pulls me closer right as the door opens.
“Mammy... work’s in thiwty minutes.” Diana’s voice fills the air and I try pulling away again knowing that I was going to be late for work but the Joker holds me there tightly in his arms.
“Thank you sweetie… um… go to the kitchen to get some breakfast.” I tell her.
“Okey doeky!” I can tell that she’s smiling when she leaves closing the door behind her, and before I have a chance to breathe the Joker has rolled me over again to my back and is now straddling my midsection.
“Now… remember that little favor I asked of you?” He smiled down at me a knife suddenly in his hand – it seems to just magically appear – and he’s stroking my face with it.
“H-Harvey D-D-Dent?” I nod my head.
“Yeeessss, mister… Dent, good girl.” He’s now off me and just like that he’s gone… out the door that is, not from my life.
Slowly I lift myself off the bed and walk to the bathroom and then into the closet. I come out a few minutes later wearing a dress that matches the color of the Joker’s hexagonal patterned dress shirt. I sigh the sleeves too short for my liking and I know I’m going to get looks because of the winter weather.
Once my shoes are on my feet I leave and enter the living room.
“Nice choice an-gel, brings out the color of your pretty little eyes.” The Joker whispers behind me, spinning me around and pulling me into a kiss. I begin to shut my eyes but quickly open them finding Diana standing behind the Joker as tightens his grip on the small of my back.
Pulling away he starts for the door. “Daddy!” Diana called running over to him and throwing her arms around his legs as if she didn’t want to see him go. And then next words that come out of her mouth seem to break my heart into itty bitty pieces. “Can I have a hug before you go?”
He laughs and she smiles as he lifts her off the ground hugging her tightly before setting her on the floor. And without a word he leaves; followed by Billy, Hugo, Jeff, Harley, and Jackie. Mark stays here seeing as he’s taking Diana to preschool today.
(That Afternoon)
I sit in the swivel chair twisting back and forth waiting for something to happen, but sadly today seems to be a slow day and nothing seemingly exciting has yet to happen. Not that anything exciting really does happen at work but almost no calls or visitors.
Hearing a knock on the door I see Bruce Wayne and smile slightly. “How have you been?”
“Um… good.” I lie, something I’ve been doing a lot lately.
“I’m sorry about that thing at the masquerade.” He said standing by my desk and I shake me head.
“No, it’s not your fault.”
Ring, ring, ring.
I glance towards the phone then back up to Bruce. “Go right ahead, I can wait.” I nod my head then pick up the phone placing it to me ear.
“Hello, Wayne Enterprises how may I help you?” Horrible laughter that makes my stomach do flips comes from the other end. I feel my face fall but then quickly smile putting on my mask.
“Why hello there angel lips!” The Joker’s high pitched voice comes from the phone and I try not to make a face.
“What do you want?” I have to clench my fist under the table as to not growl.
“Just wanted to talk to my lovely little wife! Now is that a crime?” He laughs again and I jump slightly getting a questionable look from Bruce.
“No.” I said so Bruce wouldn’t think anything.
“Ah! I see you’ve got company! The ever so popular Bruce Wayne, eh? Oh don’t you just think you’re all that.” I can hear the manic smile in his voice and turn my gaze to the door.
“Well, I also wanted to tell you that I’ve got a little sur-prise in store for you.” And the way he says the word ‘surprise’ makes me jump out of me seat.
“Sit down.” I hear his voice growl darkly in my ear and I spin around to face the window still not taking a seat. My eyes dart around trying to find him standing somewhere but I don’t. I can feel my body tremble in terror and I bite back the tears.
I have to pretend that everything’s just fine, I had to keep my mask, had to keep going on with life’s sick masquerade.
“SIT BOWN!” He shouts and I jump again plopping down on the swivel chair. My eyes dart up to Bruce who’s staring at him but once I look at him he quickly looks away.
“That’s better.” He’s smiling again.
I gulp wondering what his ‘surprise’ could be knowing it wasn’t going to be good for me.
“I love you.” He says and I’m about to put the phone down but he stops me. “Say it.” He orders but I shake my head.
I can hear him growl on the other end.
“Say it angel, you know you want to. Deep down you love me too.” I bite my lip not wanting to but give in when he growls again.
“I love you too.” I smile trying to make it seem like he’s a family member or something but I’m not sure how well it works.
“That’s a good girl.” And then the line goes dead and I look back up to Bruce.
“Boyfriend?” He questions and I realize that I probably didn’t sound like I was talking to a family member.
“No….” And he nods dropping the subject.
(That Evening)
I sigh leaving Wayne Enterprises when I feel my cell phone vibrating. I dig through my bag – I’ve never really used a purse before this year and it gets extremely annoying – pulling my phone out and seeing a text message from Josh.
‘Hey Cals! You have to come over to the apartment! Big surprise! Be here soon, I can’t wait to see the look on your face! : )’
I smile, I hated texting because it was also annoying, but I didn’t really have to reply. Walking to the bus stop I contemplate on what to do: Go home or go to Mark’s apartment, that’s where Josh is staying.
I decided go see Josh because going home would just mean seeing the Joker.
Slowly I walk trying to make it take as long as possible and when I finally reach the apartment complex people are starting to clear the streets it being so dark.
I head for the elevator pressing the button for the fifth floor. Patently I wait until I hear the dinging noise telling me that I was there. Walking down the hall I can hear someone playing their television too loud. Smiling slight I reach room 243 and test the door knob to see if it’s unlocked. And as always it is.
Entering the home I see nothing out of the ordinary but Josh is no where at all, but this doesn’t come as much of a surprise, he’s probably just in his room. Walking back to Josh’s room the odd silence of the place is eerie and I shiver slightly feeling a chill run down my spine.
I open the door my mouth falling at the sight.
Blood.
Everywhere.
Splattered on the walls, across his bed, and along the floor, and even some of the disgust stuff is smeared on the television screen. Gulping I feel my phone vibrating again and I lift it out of my bag reading the one word shown across the screen.
‘Surprise’
My eyes widen, tears falling from the like rain drops.
“No….” I whisper. This was what the Joker was talking about. The ‘surprise’ he had in store for me, this was it. And it must have been him that had texted me using Josh’s phone.
I can’t believe I had let this happen. I should have warned Josh that way he might have been able to leave town for a few days. But no, I had ignored the fact that my friend was in grave danger and just let him get hurt.
No… not hurt. More like murdered.
My phone vibrates angrily in my hand again and I look down seeing a number that I didn’t recognize. I swallow hard answering the call.
“Hello?” I manage to choke out.
“Miss Callie Walters?” A woman’s voice fills my ear and I nod my head like she can see me. I hear that her voice sounds professional and serious, maybe I’m losing my job now.
“Oui.” I don’t even try holding back my tears any longer.
“Yes, this is Nurse Carrie Sparrow from Gotham General Hospital, I’m calling to inform you about your friend Josh Bennett….” She’s about to continue but I interrupt.
“Is he dead?”
“Dead?! God, I hope not! We’re working on him right now, but he says he’d like to see you.” She tells me and I nod my head again.
“I’ll be right down there.” And with that I hang up not wanting to hear her say anything else.
(Gotham General Hospital)
I had left the apartment building as quickly as I possibly could flagging down the fastest cab I saw and leaving them with God knows how much of my money.
I ran into the hospital almost knocking over some teenager with a broken leg, but I didn’t stop. Once I got to the desk I didn’t wait for someone to come over to me.
“Will someone please show me to Josh Bennett’s room?!” For once I don’t care if I draw too much attention.
“Someone?! Anyone?!” I plead and feel a tap on my shoulder.
“I’m Nurse Carrie Sparrow.” She informed me.
‘Really? And I don’t give a fuck now show me to Josh!’ That’s what I wanted to say.
“You must be Callie.” I nod. “Wow I didn’t expect you to get here so soon. Follow me.”
I do as she tells me, and surprisingly she really doesn’t seem to mind my black eye, but her walking pace is much slower than my own so I still manage to get annoyed.
“What happened to your eye?” She questions curiously and I curse myself knowing that if I hadn’t thought about it she wouldn’t have asked.
“Ran into a door.” I answer simply remembering how Bruce laughed when I had told him.
“Oh… well I hope you get better soon.” She says opening a door, which I’m guessing is the door to Josh’s room. Entering I gasp rushing over to his side.
There’s blood on his face and cuts all over; I can feel the tears roll down my cheeks.
“Callie… he knows about you….” He whispers touching my face and I nod quickly.
“I’m sorry! This is all my fault!” I sob. “I-I knewwww!” The tears come harder as my body shakes.
“For how long?” He asks grabbing my hands and wrapping them around his weak ones.
“A-about a w-week.” I stutter and he closes her eyes, I think his trying to hold in his anger. “I’m sorry! I really am! I couldn’t tell you….” But he cuts me off.
“So you remember…?” I nod my head and he’s now staring at me. “Why… why couldn’t you tell me?”
“I….” Pausing for a moment as he strokes my cheek I see that he truly loves me when I look into his eyes. “I didn’t want to hurt you.”
“Callie… don’t worry about me….” He lightly touches me black eye and I flinch. “What happened… was it… him?”
I nod my head and his eyes grow cold.
“I’ll….” But I cut him off.
“You can’t…. But there’s no need to worry about me.” I whisper sitting down next to him. I know it may seem like I do have feelings for him right now. But I don’t, his my closest friend and I can’t bear seeing him like this, it just rips my heart in two.
“Callie….”
“Shh. Rest.” I feel him squeeze my hands and smile slightly. But the smile disappears when my phone vibrates. I look at him and he nods his head.
I get up walking to the corner and answering my phone.
“Hello?”
“Hiya an-gel.” It’s the Joker again.
“What do you want?” I snarl anger bubbling up within me. Pure hatred flows through my blood as it await his answer. I know I once had slight feelings for him – the ones he created with his mind games – but those feelings have disappeared and all that’s left is a loathing sense.
“Just wondering where you’ve been. I know you didn’t come home. Visiting Joshy boy eh? Terribly sorry, I really did mean to kill the kid. But he just didn’t seem to want to go. No worries though my cherie, I’ll have the job finished.” He smiles before laughing.
“No!” I protest.
“Yes!” He exclaims before hanging up. I shake my head and clench my fist crying.
“Callie? What’s wrong?” I hear Josh call from the other side of the room.
“I hate him.” I growl in a low tone.
“Come here.” I hear Josh call but I don’t instead I start for the door.
“I have to go.”
Those are my last words spoken to him before I leave, and once I get a cab I realize that those could be the last words I ever speak to him.
