CHAPTER 1

“I think you’ll love it at Gordon, Alexandria .I’ve seen the campus and oh, it is simply beautiful.” My mom, Tanya excitedly went on about the school she had been talking about for hours. “I spoke to the dean and he said your academic scores were marvelous. Your father and I are so proud, aren’t we James?”

She turned to look at Dad. I knew he wasn’t listening. He had that spaced out look on his face. He wasn’t exactly happy about me going to this school.

Dad must have felt moms glare on him because he turned to look at her. He stared at her for a consecutive amount of minutes be fore asking,” What was that Tanya?”

Sometimes I swear he just loves to piss mom off.

“We are proud of our daughter aren’t we?” She said through her teeth.

“Oh yes, of course. I’m proud of you Alexis.” He said flashing me a smile in the rearview mirror. I rolled my eyes and sighed dramatically. We were on the way to Gordon prep. In fact, according to mom, “where the troubled youth with great potential, but who needed a push, went to become magnificent.” But I’m not troubled or gifted .I’m not even misunderstood. I’m clearly understood actually by everyone but My mother.

The school isn’t even therapeutic so why they’re sending me there, I have no idea. It was a standard boarding school. But mom described it as the school that changed her life. Yeah okay, You think she could have changed my life by moving me to another town close by. But half-way across the United States, that’s ridiculous. For goodness sakes, if she want to get rid of me just do it. Maybe in a way they were getting rid of me. Sending me off to be someone else’s problem…

Damn!

Since the divorce my parents had changed...and not for the better. And what happened to my brother Dylan didn’t help at all. Since his death mom had become overprotective towards me. And I’ll admit I didn’t make it any better by hanging out with certain people. She didn’t want the same thing that happened to Dylan to happen to me.

Now lying down in the back seat, I’m beginning to regret it. I miss my old friends and my life before it turned into chaos. I think I’ve made an immense mistake.

Well what’s done is done. You can’t erase the past. Doesn’t that suck?

My dad is the only one who’s normal in my family. The rest of us are dysfunctional.

“We’re here!” Mom sang. “Alexandria, take a look at where you’ll be staying.”

I sat up in the seat. For the whole ride I’d had been lying in the back seat looking at the ceiling wondering what i could have done to make her life turn upside down. First my brother’s death now a boarding school, what was next?

Still, I couldn’t help the curiosity building in me. I looked out the window. Mom was right it was beautiful. The trees seemed to Tower over head and the way the trees swayed seemed so alive. That’s silly of course their alive and that’s just the wind. I opened the window but there was no breeze to greet me. That’s sketch.

The students seemed so happy and pleasant in their little “boarding school society”. There was a fountain in the middle with a plaque but i was too far to read it. There was something eerie about the whole campus; it seemed so gothic with the way everything was built. The Dorms were looked ancient, resembling a castle but at the same time they seemed modern. The campus wasn’t big enough that i couldn’t spot my dorm. The biggest one of course thanks to mom and all her connections, obviously. It had a huge sign that read Lily Allen .It has a large pink flower symbol that seemed so out of place with the surrounding area.

“Why?” i groaned and went back to lying on the seat. Closed my eyes and went back to simpler times. When my family was actually happy and my brother…i never realized how I missed him.

Seeing my disgust, dad looked out the window to my dorm.

“Tanya.” he said “Did you do that?”

“Do what?” she asked

He motioned to the dorm.

“Yes well I wanted Alexandria to have the best experience possible and that’s the dorm I stayed in so you know, like mother like daughter.”

”Tanya” was oblivious to my disgust.

Dad had nothing to say. If he argued we both knew he would lose with some I want our daughter to be the best crap or I don’t want her to see what happens when—anyway someone would end up in tears. He turned and gave me a sympathy look that said “I tried”

Like mother like daughter? Yeah, like I would want that. Grow up to be a superficial … I don’t even know what to call her. Its bad enough i had to live like mom did for the next four years, but to end up like her? That was too much. My mom went to VMPS academy when she was my age and apparently was corrupted by it.

“Now Alexandria,” mom turned to look at me “Sit up!” she said sternly

I rolled her eyes but sat up straight. My mother would be glad to know my posture hadn’t completely diminished.

“Now I couldn’t get you the room I had, but I can get you the next best thing.”

Mom paused for dramatic effect.

One of the things she learned for her parenting books. “If you want them to listen create suspense.” Or maybe those were her acting books.

“Mom what is it.”

“I got you...”

Geez why don’t you just wait till I’m old and have kids to tell me

“My old roommate’s daughter” Her mom squealed “Isn’t that great?”

“Yeah mom that’s awesome.” I said with fake enthusiasm. Too fake

Years of acting classes gone to waste.

“Oh come on Alexis, this is good. I bet when you get to know her you’ll be great friends.”

My dad and I just rolled our eyes.

"Room 312, room 313, ah here we are room 314.”Said Jordan .She was one of the resident assistants who had decided to help me get settled in my dorm.

She opened the door to reveal a room with pale yellow walls and two beds. There were two desks facing opposite walls. Besides the lack of furniture and the fact that the room had many windows the room was spacious and i kind of liked it.

Mom on the other hand couldn’t handle the thought of her “Precious daughter” sleeping in anything less than what she had when she went here.

Jordan, where can we go to get Alexis signed in?” Dad asked

“Well I can bring you there.” She answered in her chirpy voice. Her curly blonde hair bounced when she started out of the room, Or rather skipped out of the room.

“We’ll be right back sweetie.” said Mom, giving me a peck on the cheek.

“Okay mom.”

Jordan?” I called

“Yes?”

“How is it here? I mean its good right? Safe?”

“Yes, of course. Gordon prep is one of the best schools you could ever attend.”

“Okay.” I said unsatisfied. My question hadn’t been answered.

I fixed my bed but wasn’t ready to unpack my things just yet. I could hear other kids outside, the girls screaming and the guys throwing footballs around. Even the birds chirping and what sounds like a couple arguing. Finally to avoid boredom, i decided to go outside and explore.
