I wanted to be like you
I wanted everything
“That’s enough for today,” Gaara said.
“No,” she panted in exhaustion. She straightened herself up. “One more round.”
“It’s obvious you can’t handle another fight,” Gaara said. “Why must you always push yourself?”
She didn’t answer, only looked at the ground as she nodded. “Same time tomorrow?”
“Probably not,” he replied. “I have a mission tomorrow. The day I get back.”
“Alright,” she said. “See you then.”
So I tried to be like you
And I got swept away
She wandered around the village as her mind wandered to the past. After years of watching him in awe from afar, she had gotten the chance to start training with Gaara just a few months ago. She had always admired his strength, his resilience, probably because she lacked those. And she knew it. She tried to become better in her skills, and tried even harder when she started training with Gaara. She felt she never improved, but he had told her once before that she had been making significant progress. She felt so good, so happy, when he said that. It was so encouraging that she tried even harder, trained longer, so that she could be more like him. She wanted to spend as much time with him.

It was late; she was walking in the village, with nothing but the moonlight to guide her. Up ahead she could see 3 figures. One of them she recognized as Gaara. She stopped when she realized this, unsure whether she should continue on or stay out of the way. She didn’t have to wonder long; the two left, shouting nasty things to Gaara, satisfying themselves for the moment. When they were out of sight, she slowly approached him; his back was to her, but he knew she was there.
“What are you doing up at this hour?” he asked quietly.
“Oh,” she said as she stopped in her tracks. “I was just wandering… I’m not very tired.” Gaara gave a slight nod, but didn’t turn to face her. “Are you alright?” she asked. “That was pretty brutal what they said, just now.”
“I’m fine,” he answered a bit curtly. “I’m glad,” she said, ignoring the curtness in his voice; she was used to this, and she never seemed to be bothered by it, probably because when he acted that way it wasn’t ever strongly directed to her. “I don’t think I could handle that sort of thing.” That’s something she always admired about him as well.
“You could say I’m used to it,” Gaara said.
“Right, sorry,” she said quietly.
I didn't know that it was so cold
And you needed someone to show you the way
“Hey…” she said. “How about you and I…” she trailed off as he turned to face her.
“You and I what?” he asked.
“Well,” she stammered as she stared at his mesmerizing green eyes. “I was just thinking that I’d show you this place I found. It’s always made me feel better and I thought maybe…” she trailed off again; now as she was saying it out loud it sounded kinda stupid.
If you want to I can save you
I can take you away from here
“Alright,” he nodded. She felt so relieved and happy; she gave a small smile as she led him just outside the village, up a nearby plateau, to its edge, where they could see the village below.
“Just being here, away from it all…” she sighed. “I feel more confident; it just takes all the pressure away.”
“What sort of pressure?” he asked.
“Well…” she started. “You know how I am with training. I just…” she sighed as she thought out how to say what she was thinking. “I just want to get better.”
“You have been,” he said.
“No, not good enough,” she said. “I wish…I wish I was like you.”
“Me?”
She nodded. “You probably never knew this Gaara, but I’ve looked up to you for the longest time. I felt so lucky when I started training with you, like I could accomplish anything cuz you were there for me. But…” she sighed. “Honestly, these past few months, I’ve felt more. You’ve become so much more to me, and I just want you to know I’ll always be there for you because…I think I love you.”
All you wanted was somebody who cares
If you need me you know I'll be there
Gaara stared back at her, his face expressionless. Ok, maybe not quite expressionless; his brow was furrowed slightly in confused disbelief, and his mouth was slightly agape in awe.
“I know this is probably not what you-”
“You love me?” he asked.
“I think,” she stammered. “I do know that I’m willing to help you in any way possible, that I care for you a lot, maybe more than anyone else, and I would be hurt when you were, happy when you were.”
There was a lingering silence, then Gaara said, “If that’s what you think love is…I think I love you too.” She slowly smiled as the thought registered into her mind, and almost just as slowly, she moved in closer to him, reached for his hand, and gave him a kiss. He twitched slightly in shock, but slowly gave in as the new feeling came over him; he gave a small smile as he returned the gesture.
So lonely inside
So busy out there
And all you wanted was somebody who cares
