Angel had visions like I did. But her's were always of bad things. Like tragic deaths or evil murders. And Angel wasn't like other vampires. Something had went wrong when she was changed so she had more human qualities then we did. She wasn't hungry as often as we were , she slept and sometimes ate normal food, lukewarm blood was pumped around her body by a barely beating heart.
Sometimes at night, she'd come to me crying. These visions were so upsetting to her. I was drawing in my room when she came in crying. She was wearing pajamas and clutching a teddy bear. I sat up and she came over and sat on my lap. We had no parents (or parent figures) but Anthony was of age to mind us (even though we were all around a hundred years old).
Angel told me about her vision, her nightmare. It was horrible.
I held her close and sang her our lullaby. Anthony didn't understand why she came to me and not him. but it was because he didn't understand. I could relate to Angel and he couldn't.
"Renn is very pretty" Angel said, eventually and in a small, sleepy voice.
"Yes, she is" I agreed.
"Do you like her?" she asked, her voice rather hopeful.
"I don't know" I replied.
"I was talking to her before. She's very nice." This was another thing about Angel. She never seemed to age at all. Physically and otherwise.
"I'm sure she is."
"I don't like that you're alone."
"What do you mean?" I asked.
"Anthony has that one, what's her name, eh Shelly. And even ruby has Ross. But you have no one" Angel said, sadly.
It was true. Anthony and Ruby had their mates from another coven. It was strictly secret, though.
"I don't mind being alone" I said.
"But it's not fair. You deserve someone who'll make you happy."
"But Angel, you know I can't. I might lose my temper hurt her or even kill her accidentally." I did think Renn was, as Angel put it, pretty. But I knew I probably wouldn't get to know her. But.... I already knew her. She had to know me. I put Angel to bed.
The next day at school, I went looking for Renn. I found her alone, wandering.
"Hey, Renn" I smiled.
"Oh, hi Evan."
"So what are you up to?" I asked.
"Nothing. I'm bored so I'm just walking around" she replied.
"Mind if I join you?" I asked.
"No. Go ahead" she smiled.
We walked in silence for a while, until Anthony walked by.
"I'm sorry about your parents" she said.
We had told the people here they died over the summer.
I didn't reply.
"Angel is so sweet" she smiled.
"Yeah" I replied.
We talked for a while until she knew enough about me. That was safe, that is. The bell rang and we had different classes.
"It was nice talking to you" I said.
"Yeah, same" she nodded. She offered her hand to shake, but instead I took it and kissed it.
"Hopefully, you'll grace me with your company again some time soon" I said, with a grin.
She blushed and gave a nod.
"Goodbye" I said and we set off for our classes.
All through English, Angel's nightmare was vivid in my mind. As the teacher, who was like 19, wrote up a poem and asked for people's opinions, horrible pictures raced through my head. Some kind of monster racing after a screaming child, then pouncing and ripping it to shreds.
"Evan, what's your view?" the teacher asked.
I hadn't been paying attention, but I knew the poem well. I was there when it was wrote. I recited what the poet told me he was thinking when he wrote it. But they didn't know that.
I was applauded by the class. Except Shane, the only other kid good at English, glared at me. I flashed a mocking grin, then sat back, relaxed, in my seat and continued daydreaming.
A bell rang to signal the end of classes and the junior end of school letting out. Also time for me to leave. I always left at this time on Wednesdays and Fridays, which were my days to mind Angel after school. I was taking her hunting. Hunting was supposed to be instinctive, but Angel was pretty poor at it. She was always rather clumsy when running and it was hard for her.
She skipped over to me. We drove to our house in the forest. I carried her on my back to deep part of the forest and we began our hunt.
Ruby was in a foul mood when we returned. Something Anthony had said. You'd think after 98 years, she'd learn to ignore him. But, no.
In the middle of the night, Angel let out a scream. I rushed to her room. Angel was breathing heavily and looked at me, terrified.
"What happened?" I asked.
She didn't reply.
"Angel! What happened?" I demanded.
"You killed Renn in my dream" she sobbed.
I stumbled backwards.
