|Chapter 1: Running|

Just another Jacob Black series. The idea popped into my head and I decided to start this story. It won't be too long; I'm not expecting chapter 20 or even 15 to come along but we'll have to see what happens. The character's name is Trista Taupe (which is a shade of black by the way!) Any kind of messages are welcome! Hope you enjoy!

Chapter 1: Running
I could feel the cold forest ground under my paws every time gravity pulled me down from the air. I could see the sun directly overhead telling everyone that it was noon. I could smell the faint trail that my target had left for me to follow. I could nearly taste victory in my jaws if only I ran a little longer and a little faster. But above all else, I could hear his voice in my head.

‘Damn it Taupe! Leave me alone!’

‘Not happening Black! Now give up before you run us both into the Atlantic will you?’

‘Not up for swimming? It’s what you do best isn’t it?’

‘Diving and swimming have a very significant difference Black! I couldn’t expect you
to know that though, being the dull-brained dog that you are!’

‘Just go run back to Sam and the others! I want to be alone!’

‘If you think that I would ever-’

‘Trista,’ a new voice chided,
‘leave him alone.’

‘No.’ I replied as I pushed my muscles to work faster and harder. I could tell I was gaining.

‘Trista.’ the voice was hard and commanding. The voice of an alpha. ‘Come home. Now.’

‘Sam, I said no!’ I could feel a slight tug in my brain; a tug pulling back towards La Push and the pack. But the tug wasn’t very powerful and I forced my legs to go even faster. He wasn’t far from me now.

‘You,’ Jacob spoke again, ‘have got to be the most annoying, egotistical, defiant, stubborn little-’

‘Got cha!!’

A surprised yelp came from Jacob’s muzzle as I pounced onto his back but he was quick to throw me off. I circled around to face him and we both started to growl and crouch, threats of a fight running through both our heads.

‘Both of you stop at once!’ It was Sam again. This command had similar effects as before but it seemed to take a greater toll on Jacob. Reluctantly, Jacob lowered his hunched shoulders and his growls quieted but his mouth still bared his teeth in my direction. I merely relaxed my muscles but kept them ready to pounce within a moments notice.

‘Now, Jake, you are free to do what you please but remember what I told you. Trista, I need you to come back to La Push at once.’

‘I’ve already told you no. I’m staying with Jake.’

‘The hell you are!’ Jacob yelled while snarling at me. It only tempted me to snarl back.

‘As if you can do anything about it!’

‘Watch me!’ and he took off running again. I barked in frustration and ran after him immediately. I was not letting him get away; I was not letting him out of my sights.

‘Trista!’

‘Let it go Sam! Your commands don’t work on me! So leave us the hell alone!’

I could feel Sam’s frustration and anger but I didn’t care. It was Jacob’s anger that was my priority. After a minute of silence I felt acceptance. Annoyance with it but acceptance none the less.

Somewhat smirking in delight I said, ‘Thanks Sam.’

‘I’m not doing it for your benefit. Be sure to give Jake plenty of space Trista.’

I had to bark with laughter. ‘I already told you that commands don’t work on me. I’ll give him as much space as I want to!’

‘Just try Trista.’ and then his presence was gone. Now it was just me and lover-boy ahead of me.

We continued running in general silence for a time until I sensed a feeling of hunger that didn’t belong to me.

‘Pull over Black. You need to hunt.’

‘No, I don’t.’

‘Suit yourself. I’m not the one who took off without eating first.’

I heard him growl and decided to drop it. His own hunger would overpower him eventually.

It was early the next sunrise when my prediction started coming true. I could feel his need for food but his reluctance to stop running with me so close behind him.

‘Just hunt Black. I’m not going anywhere away from you so just give it up!’

He didn’t reply and tried to run faster. I mentally sighed and picked up my pace as well, easily keeping up.

It was past noon when Jacob suddenly collapsed in front of me. I pulled into a quick halt and gently nudged his panting form with my nose. His eyes flew over to me as he attempted to glare but I could tell he didn’t have the energy.

He tried to stand back up on his paws a few times but always ended up back on the ground again and with less breath than he had before. I sniffed around his face and found I could smell what he was feeling; ache, pain, weakness, helplessness, hunger and, above all, exhaustion. A grown wolf, even one the size of us, was not built to run until his muscles burned for over a day without any food.

‘Idiot.’ I scolded. ‘You’ve run yourself right out of energy.’

I felt a slight worry when he didn’t even respond. He was too tired to think beyond sleep. Already he was drowsing.

‘Sleep then. I’ll find you some food.’ With a last sniff of his face to make sure that this wasn’t an act I turned and ran off, chasing the fresh scent of deer close by.
