About ten minutes of feeling the blood rush to my head, Thomas stopped walking. He put me down and held my waist to support me. Once my blood seeped through the rest of my body, I realized we were in the middle of a swamp and in front of a tiny shack.

“Um, why are we here?” I asked him. He pushed me forward and I figured out the rest. I opened the molding door and cautiously moved inside. I felt Thomas right behind me and all feelings of doubt washed away. Inside, the first thing I noticed was the pictures nailed to the walls. I received a small push from Thomas and I continued walking. My eye traveled to one photo at a time. I realized that they were of him.

“This is you.” I whispered to no one in particular; it felt as though it needed to be said, confirmed. Every single picture contained a boy, whose face was covered conveniently by someone or something. One picture broke my heart. I covered my mouth with my gloved hand at the sight. A boy in a flannel shirt had his face covered by two hands. Whose hands they were? I could only guess: Hoyt.

I turned away from the pictures to look into the eyes of the man who I loved and respected.

“Why did you show me this?” I asked, my voice cracking, tears stinging my eyes. How did he grow up? What was it like to learn you were a monster? How could anyone live knowing they were an embarrassment to their family? With a father like Hoyt, it would have been ten times worse than anything I could ever imagine.

Thomas pulled me into his arms while I cried into his already dirty shirt. I felt his lips brush against my hair as he held me close.

Life was cruel. That was the sad truth. Thomas Hewitt was an example of life at its worst. He woke up every morning thinking he was a monster who would never fit in with society. He was constantly told to hide by his father, Luda Mae, probably Tex, and every town member who knew of him. I couldn’t imagine that and probably never would.

“I love you, Thomas.” I whispered.

“I love you, too.”
