Chapter 2- The beginning

Natalie pulled up into her drive way, turned off the car and opened the boot for me. I got out and collected my things. Natalie played around with her keys to find the right one. I looked up at the dark sky as rain drops fell lightly onto my face; the sun was setting Natalie finally found the key. She unlocked the door and flicked on the porch light, she went inside, leaving the door open behind her for me and started turning on the lights before she hung up her jacket. I hung my jacket up and placed my bags on the floor as I took in a deep breath, the house was beautiful. The house was tropical scene; there is a prodigious use of light and space; breezes flow though rooms, cooling and caressing occupants. I was even amazed to see a lanai, which is a type of veranda that has wide eaves to shelter the interior from the sun and is open to the elements on at least three sides, thus ensuring the free flow of cooling breezes; and just in front of the lanai was the La push beach! It was stunning! This is so going to be my relaxing place. When I walked to the veranda there was a gate, then down the stairs of the gate was a rock pavement leading back up to the front yard, which then turned into the woods. I turned back to the gate and kept on going until I was on La push beach and my shoes crunched on the pebbles and rocks.

I ran back up to the house quickly grabbing my bags and following Natalie, who was already up the stairs; she gave me a warm smile and kept on walking. I have noticed that she hasn’t spoken since the interview, she must be really shy. Well at least she has me now, I’ll be there for her and the more she opens up, I’ll open up, too. I kept on walking up the stairs and followed her into a room, she was sitting on a bed, it was blue with golden patterns and then I looked around. The walls were a dark purple, but not too dark, there was a wooden desk, the floors were a hardwood timber, and there was a walk in wardrobe, a bed side table for my books and a window next to it. I dropped my bags and walked over to the window, there was an enormous, drop-dead gorgeous oak tree swaying with the wind just outside my window.

“Oh, Natalie this is so cool, thank you!” I turned to her and jumped on the bed giving her the biggest hug ever.

“I’m really glad you like it Rose.”

You could hear the shyness in her voice and she hesitated a bit when hugging me. Wow, this woman needs some back bone. Ah, Rose! Don’t judge a book by its cover I told myself while shaking my head to get the thought out.

“So how long have you been living here?” I asked crossing my legs on the bed and looked up at her. I was trying to get to know her a bit more and vice versa.

“Well,” she began. “I’ve lived in Forks for 5 years now. I work at a café in La Push. As you know my husband cheated on me and we have been divorced for a year now. I’ve always wanted a daughter and here you are. What about you?” she asked me getting comfy. This is good; maybe she has a back bone after all.

I giggled as a wave of excitement washed over me, weird. I placed my hands in my lap and sighed.

“Well, as you know my parents are . . . well gone…” I tried not to make it as if I wanted them gone, I loved them very much, but I was also trying not to make sound like I was sad about it either.

“I’m really sorry about that Rose” Natalie was giving me the ‘I’m really sorry’ look. Grrr, I don’t need anybody’s sympathy.

“Please Natalie, I don’t need your sympathy, I’m fine. It was years ago and well I’m always a happy person, well not always, but you know what I mean.” I laid it out for her and smiled. She didn’t look like she was convinced, but I really was fine, at least I think?

Natalie took me down stairs into the kitchen so I can talk and so she can cook. She was making spaghetti and meatballs and it smells so delicious.

“So do you know anybody here in Forks or use to when you did live here?” Natalie asked not looking away from her cooking.

“Um, I don’t remember . . .” I trailed off thinking. Did I? I really can’t remember . . . oh wait!

“Yes, I did. I forget her name but she had fair skin, her hair was a short wavy brown and her eyes were a warm brown, too.” I smiled at myself remembering something years ago. Well my mum did say you remember a lot of things when you 5 years old.

“That’s great Rose, you might get to see her at school, well that’s if she’s still lives in town.” Natalie said placing a bowel in front of me and she served us both and then sat down.

“Yeah, that would be great to know one person at school.” I mumbled to myself. Dinner was quiet, but a good quiet. That’s what I liked about Natalie, she is such a calm and quiet soul and she’s great at listening too. When I placed I placed my bowel in the sink and rinsed it, Natalie asked me something before she went to bed.

“Rose, after school could I please take you to one of my favourite places ever. I would like you to meet some friends of mine. They live in La Push and are the nicest people you would meet.” She said leaning in the door way.

“Yeah sure, is there anybody there my age?” I asked while drying my hands on a towel.

“You’ll see, goodnight Rose.” She said and left with that. Huh, a surprise, cool.

I ran up the stairs, went to my room, grabbed my night bag and left to the bathroom. I pulled my hair out and brushed the chest nut brown hair with a tint of cinnamon that flowed to my back. I brushed my teeth fiercely, trying to be thorough and speedy, removing all the food and furriness out of my mouth. I got undressed and turned the hot water on, this, I didn’t won’t to rush. It unknotted the muscles in my back, calming me. I sighed as the hot water poured onto me like honey. The familiar smell of my shampoo made me think about the same person I had been this morning. I tried not to think about my new school and where I am today, it would just send a confusing emotion running through my body and make me feel weird, like I was living someone else’s life.

The hot water was making me sleepy and I couldn’t delay anymore. I shut off the water, towelling hastily, really wanting to talk to Ruby and get to bed, so I don’t have to think and can just dream. I put on my grey tank top and black short, shorts. I rubbed the towel through my hair again and then yanked the brush through it quickly. After I was done I stopped and took a deep breathe, I walked over to the hamper and placed my towel in gently. I packed my night bag and then walked across the hall to my room tip-toeing; Natalie was probably already fast asleep. I closed the door lightly, placed my night bag on the floor, got into bed and pulled out my laptop.

Hey Ruby,

How is everyone? How’s Rebecca? Can you please tell her that I’m fine and liking my new home?

Wow, Ruby it’s stunning here! Natalie and I talked for ages!

Did you know we’re on the border of Forks and La push? Pretty cool, huh?

Damn it, I’ve got school tomorrow. Not looking forward for that. =[

It’s late and I’ve got to get some sleep.

I love you all.

Rose.

I closed my laptop and put it on my desk, I then turned off my lamp next to my bed on my bedside table where my books go. I was more tired than I realized, exhausted from the long day of moving and leaving my old life behind. I felt my body drifting off to sleep and then my eyes closed lightly. Tomorrow is my new life and a confusing yet exciting beginning.
