Winnipeg's Assiniboine Park Zoo World Famous Polar Bear "Debby"

Created by tarbashali on Thursday, January 29, 2009

The oldest Polar Bear in the world "Debby" of the Winnipeg Zoo passed away in November 2008. Debby could be said to be the last of her kind , the last of a mold. Winnipeg's Debby the Polar Bear was famous worldwide and especially for the Winnipeg zoo. Indeed she was the oldest Polar Bear on record - being 42 years of age at the time of untlimely demise.

Debbie's fame was in her photogeniety and she was certainly the most famous animal of all in the Assininiboine Park Zoo's history. Her uncanny ability to strike magnificent as well as"charming" poses resulted in her being featured in countless photographs, films and media stories.

It has been estimated that about 18 million visitors at the Winnipeg Manitoba Assiniboine Park Zoo had seen Debby the Polar Bear over the course of her lifetime, making the bear one of the most popular attractions in the Zoo's 104 year history.

Indeed Debby had beenborn not in Northern Canada or in the north of the Province of Mantioba Canada but rather was born in the Rusian Artic regions in 1966 , having arrived as an orphan cub in 1967 . Throughout her lifepspan Debby produced 6 offspring with her mate Polar Bear "Skipper".

When Debby was 41 years old she was entered into the Guinness World Book of Records as the oldest living Polar Bear.

Sadly the Winnipeg Zoo no longer meets Manitoba conservation standards for housing Polar Bears , so the Assiniboine Park Winnipeg Zoo will not be able to replace Debby the Polar Bear with another Polar Bear. Well not at least now.
