Tardive Dyskinesia In Effect

Created by rogermercer8191 on Tuesday, March 10, 2009

Tardive Dyskinesia is a terrible disorder that affects hundreds of thousands of people even though it’s something that could have been prevented. Physicians are there to do everything they can to prevent people from developing diseases. However, instead of curing the original illness, Physicians continue courses of treatment, which can cause patients to develop complications without informing patients of these possible problems during their treatments. It is important that you are aware what TD is and how it is caused if you want to prevent it from affecting you or a loved one.
This condition is largely unknown by the general population. After all, Tardive Dyskinesia has been kept as hushed up as possible, because it’s in the best interests of the big pharmaceutical companies to keep it that way. The pharmaceutical company is failing to disclose the fact that some of their best-selling drugs are causing a problem. Government regulations have compelled them to mention TD on their information sheets as a possible side effect. Even though doctors know about the side effects of these drugs, they still give them to their patients. Innocent people tend to get caught in the center of terrible situations.
Tardive Dyskinesia occurs when a person takes a drug that increases the brain’s sensitivity to dopamine. The parts of the brain controlling movement are affected, leading to certain uncontrolled movements. TD normally takes the shape of automatic contortions of the attributes of the face. The person with the disorder may make faces, have a protruding tongue, smack their lips repeatedly, or constantly seem to be sucking or chewing. The patient’s limbs can also be affected with involuntary movements like shaking or jerking.
A patient with this disorder may find many different drugs being the cause. These neuroleptic drugs help treat psychoses and other gastrointestinal problems.

Certain non-neuroleptic medications that can result in Tardive Dyskinesia also exist. They include drugs commonly prescribed for treating depression, such as Prozac, Zoloft, Tofranil, and Elavil.
If you are taking any of these medications, talk with your doctor about it and make sure he’s prescribing you the lowest possible dosage and doing it for the shortest time possible. If these drugs are used for a long time then it can lead to the onset of TD. It may be with them for the rest of their lives, even if they stop taking the medication that caused it in the first place, once people develop the disorder. The problem may go away if it is stopped, but it also could aggravate the problem.
