Naruto and Sasuke were both left orphaned. Sasuke had the whole village in favor of him. Naruto had the whole village afraid and against him. They had never started out as equals. Only the same on being alone, but there loneliness was different. No one was there for Naruto; But Sasuke had people, just none that cared for him, only his name, Uchiha. Soon they were together everyday at the academy. Again, they weren’t equal. Sasuke the genius and Naruto the idiot, the prankster, the monster, the one everybody hates. They never started as equals.

Now you're feeling more and more frustrated
And you're getting all kind of impatient waiting
Sasuke could get attention without wanting it. Naruto had to fight tooth and nail for it. He got attention by pranking, running, and trying harder than anyone had ever thought possible just to get people to notice who he was. All he wanted was acceptance. Eventually Naruto had gotten it. He earned it, and Sasuke was born with it. It was a hard feat, but Naruto made it. Then Sasuke started to accept Naruto as his teammate.

Step one, they became teammates. Then they became rivals, always striving to be better than one another. Soon they became friends; however, they were reluctant to admit it. Friends, talking, arguing, hanging out, training, fighting. Eventually they became the best of friends and nearly inseparable. Then Sasuke changed everything when he left for power and vengeance. Naruto kept fighting towards getting Sasuke back, back to the village, back to him. Sasuke was fighting to kill his brother, Itatchi. Never once could their bond break, Naruto wouldn’t let it. Besides, it was too strong, too pure to break that easily. Eventually Sasuke killed his brother and Orochimaru. Then he came back to the village in a much-unexpected manner.
You believe and you doubt

If they only knew
Sasuke came back with Pein to destroy Konoha, to get back at this accursed village for what it did to his family, to his brother that he killed for nothing at all. Sasuke, his team, which consisted of Karin, Sugetstu, and Juugo, and the Akutski that wasn’t extracting the eight-tailed beast, joined together to destroy Konoha. Sasuke knew they wanted to kill Naruto for the Nine-tailed Demon that resided inside of Naruto. Like he cared, he wanted to severe his ties to the blond, and as long as Naruto was alive, that couldn’t very well happen. But something just didn’t feel right.

When Sasuke saw his ex-teammate, friend, comrade, he felt a bubbling in the pit of his stomach. The last time he saw the blond he didn’t feel like this. The feeling got worse as Naruto cried, yelling ‘why’? His eyes were asking more. Why? Why was Sasuke with Akutski? Why did he come here to destroy the village, his home? But mostly, Why did you leave me? Why did you leave me alone? Why did you leave me all alone, again? Didn’t I mean anything to you? The look Naruto was giving him and the fact that he was crying was taking a toll on Sasuke. Naruto wasn’t meant to cry, it doesn’t suit him. Then Naruto was attacked by Konan and fell. Sasuke couldn’t take this feeling anymore, it just hurt too much. He just wanted to go to Naruto’s side and say that he was sorry, even if that was very un-Uchiha-like thing to do. Then Sasuke saw Pein going in for the last fatal blow, to kill the Kyuubi-vessel. Before Sasuke knew what he was doing, Amaterasu was covering all the Akutski. By then eight-tails was done and the other Akutski had shown up. Sasuke yelled for his team to stay away from the flames, especially after what happened with Karin not to long ago. When all the Akutski were good and dead, he relinquished the black flames of Amaterasu.

This time it was Sasuke who took the first step. He walked over to Naruto, then he did one of the most un-Uchiha-like things he could have done. He apologized to the blond. Naruto was shocked that, one Sasuke had saved him, and two he was apologizing for what he has done. But Naruto, being Naruto, he accepted Sasuke’s apology. Sasuke came back to the village not to long after. He had handled his punishment rather well. Sasuke had gotten a lighter sentence because he had gotten rid of the top threats to the village, as Naruto had pointed out to the village elders many times during Sasuke’s trial.
When you can't wait any longer

It's the faith that makes you stronger
The only way you get there
Is one step at a time
The next step Sasuke had to take was restoring everyone in the village’s trust in him. This was a hard task for him because he was a traitor who left with the village’s biggest traitor, Orochimaru, and he had helped to almost destroy the very same village he had left. Although, Naruto’s faith and trust in the young Uchiha had never once faltered or wavered, it was always there, no matter what had happened.

The next step for the Sharingan user was to get things back to normal. The village was actually surprisingly quick to forgive him. Sasuke and Naruto were working on getting back to being as close as they once were. He had to get used to avoiding his growing fan club again, which was hard because their tracking skills had improved exceedingly since he left. Everyone in the village trusts him again and they have already forgiven him, but he can’t forgive himself. He can’t forgive what he has done. That’s the last step in this stage, forgiving what he’s done.
