Love Once Lost [[8]]
That whole week of school was dreadful for them both. Jake couldn’t stand the sight of Rae hanging out with Daylnn. He noticed, though, every time Daylnn tried to kiss her she shied away. Not like with him. With Jake, Rae would usually kiss him first.
That weekend Jake decided to be upfront and confrontational with Rae. He was going to ask her straight up if what he was told was true.
Subject; Thought We Should Talk
Hey Rae…It’s Jake. I noticed these last few days for us…have been…awkward. So you’re back with Daylnn? Oh wait that’s right, you never broke up with him! How could you lie to me like that. Or perhaps it was Daylnn who lied to me? Anyway if you’re with Daylnn then how come you keep avoiding his kisses? Don’t you two love each other? Or is what I’m seeing some kind of illusion I can’t shake off?
I hope we can still be friends. If you want to.
I Miss You…
-Jake
Rae read the message. She felt bad at the beginning. When she read the part about her and Daylnn, she felt her face burn up. He lied to Jake and no doubt Chellie had done the same to her.
Subject; Thought We Should Talk
What? I left him for you. Jake I would never lie to you. The reason I agreed to the break up was because I was told that your ex girlfriend died and that you only ended up with me because I reminded you of her. Jake please call me. We really need to talk.
I love you Always
-Rae
Jake read the message. So he should’ve trusted her. Then why didn’t he? Did he honestly not have enough love for Rae, enough trust to believe her or at least ask her first if what he heard was true?
It was obvious now. Obvious to both of them that they had been set-up. Daylnn wanted Rae back and Chellie wanted Jake.
Jake picked up the phone and dialed in Rae’s number.
“Jake, oh my gosh. I’ll call you back. Daylnn is on the other line. I’m going to three way you in so you can hear me break up with him this time.”
“Okay.”
Jake stood by the phone for about two minutes before it finally immersed into a loud sound of ringing.
“Okay don’t say anything until you feel the time is right, okay. Or don’t say anything at all and just listen.”
“Alright, but Rae?”
“Yes?”
“I’m sorry. I should’ve asked if what I heard was true first rather just take his word for it. Can you forgive me?”
“Jake…”
The line was silent until Rae’s voice rang over the phone once more.
“Sorry, Daylnn, I’m back.”
“Hey babe. So what were you doing?”
“Oh, just reading something Jake sent me. So, apparently did you know you and I never broke up? Did you know that Jake’s ex-girlfriend died too?”
“Wow. That sounds dramatic.”
“No. It sounds like you and Chellie lied to me and Jake. Daylnn, I’ll make sure that Jake knows we broke up this time. We’re over.”
The line went quiet again. Had Rae hung up?
“Jake?”
“Yes Rae?”
“Jake I’m so sorry. I feel the same way about our trust. Can you forgive me?”
“Of course, Rae. I’m sorry I didn’t ask you. Will you forgive me if I forgive you?”
“Of course.”
Jake was satisfied when he hung up the phone. For one, he was told he was loved, for another, Rae was his girlfriend again.
He grabbed his pillow and buried his face in it. Then he gently rolled over on his side and fell to sleep.
The next day, on the phone with Rae, Jake noticed she had been sick.
“Rae if your sick, I can let you go. You sound awful. Why don’t you get some rest?”
“I don’t know what’s the matter with me. I can’t seem to keep my food down.”
“Well I think you should get some rest.”
“Yeah I’m going to the store. I’ll call you back later tonight ok.”
“Ok. Love ya.”
“I love you, too.”
Rae hung up the phone. She was going to get a test from the store. She needed to know what was wrong with her now more than anything. She asked her mom if she would take her to the store.
“Of course, Rae. What’s the occasion?”
“I need to get something.”
Rae’s mom got her car keys and headed out the front door with Rae. She took her to the store and waited in the car while Rae got whatever it was she needed.
Inside the store, Rae decided to just do what she needed to there. She pulled the little plastic thermometer looking tube out of the box. She had to wait exactly one minute. She looked at the clock. That meant at exactly 7:30 P.M. She had to wait a whole minute, the whole time her heart was racing. Racing like a rabbit’s heart when the rabbit is scared.
Thirty more seconds, then fifteen, then, she could look. She picked up the tester and closed her eyes. With a breath of fresh air and exhalation, she opened her eyes.
Blue. Her results were blue, positive. She slumped against the wall of the stall. The bathroom was quiet except for cry. Her overjoyed and scared cries. She was happy for herself. The question was what would her parents think. What would he want to do with it? Would he even be the dad? Would he want to be?
“What took you so long Rae?”
“Nothing. Just, I had to make sure of something.”
Rae’s mom could tell she wasn’t being her usual self. She was staying with her for the weekend. She didn’t like to be all alone in her trailer house on the weekends.
“What’s going on Rae?”
“I’m…pregnant. I’m pregnant and it’s Jake’s. Do you think he’ll want it?”
“Oh, Rae! That’s exhilarating! How many months?!”
“You mean you’re not mad?”
“Mad? Why would I be? My daughter is having my grandchild. What is there to be mad about?”
Rae smiled and hugged her mom from across the car. She knew someone would be there to help her at least. Now about the father. Would he be there for her?
Once Rae was home she lay in her bed. She was so tired. Not like usual, more than usual. She needed sleep, just her and the one she would now be with for almost a year.
