Until now, I had never seen the world.
Until this enchanting moment, I had never seen what Jasper really looked like.
It was all so new.
Every speck of dust was visible, every colour, every shadow, every lining and shape didn’t miss my eyes. My hearing extended all the way down to the freeway, my brain felt unusually big, like I had all the space in the world to fill it.
I wondered why there was no more touch against my now cold skin. In a movement that was too fast for human eyes, I jolted up. The next thing I knew I was standing upright, my eyes locked on my vampire family in front of me.
I carefully observed each one, saving Jasper for last.
Rosalie, looking impossibly beautiful, was standing with a smug smile, her arms crossed and her eyes soft but mocking. I couldn’t understand why. Alice was next to her, her pale face and small features looking alarmingly attractive, and I wondered why she was smiling widely. Esme was looking lovely next to them, sweet and caring. Exactly two feet in front of the women stood the men. In a line of three were Edward, Carlisle and Emmett. Edward and Emmett were looking more dashing than I had ever seen and Carlisle as beautiful as Rosalie—like looking into the sun.
And Jasper…
This was easily going to be my favourite part of being a vampire—the eyes. He was so beautiful, pale, but handsome. Tall, lean and muscular. I was able to see every line of Jasper, every inch of skin, every time his muscles flexed I saw his skin move with it. I saw every scar, he was covered in them, but that made him more beautiful. I wondered how many times he had been attacked. He must have been more dangerous than I ever had realized. A vampire who looked like that, any one would be afraid.
Every one except me…
I didn’t feel afraid at all. In fact, my throat wasn’t even burning. I wondered where it was, why I wasn’t feeling particularly thirsty.
Edward must have heard this in my thoughts, because his eyebrow rose.
“Kira?” Jasper said slowly, but in a hard voice. He was clearly in soldier mode. I wasn’t Kira right now, I was a newborn.
My gaze lifted to him, and I smiled slightly. “Different.” I said, surprised at my melodic voice. “It’s different.”
Jasper didn’t relax, but Carlisle smiled. “Yes Kira, it’s different.”
I clutched my throat and gave Jasper a questioning gaze. “I don’t understand.”
“What’s wrong Kira?” Jasper asked cautiously.
“She’s not thirsty.” Edward said with an awed smile. “Jazz…look…look at her eyes.”
Emmett’s already large grin curled wider. Alice was practically jumping in place.
“I don’t understand it.” Jasper said to Carlisle, who had moved up next to him. “Could this…could this be what she can do?”
“Perhaps my son,” Carlisle said putting his hand on his son’s perfect shoulder. “What a miraculous creature.”
But Jasper did not relax. He had too much training with newborns to relax.
“Japer?” Alice said excitedly. “Jasper, please?”
Jasper looked uncertain of something; his eyes were torn between admiration and curiosity. He simply nodded once, not turning his gaze to Alice. She took off immediately, but I didn’t miss her movements, I caught every one. She had a dance to her step, something I saw much clearer now, and I wondered if I could even be half as graceful as she was.
Exactly twenty seconds later, she returned with a mirror that was far too big for her. Although her strength helped her out immensely, Emmett took it from her, not wanting his little sister to get to close to me. I smiled softly at that, I liked how they protected each other.
Even if it was from me.
Emmett began to walk forward with the mirror, Jasper mirroring his movements. Jasper was behind Emmett by a fraction of a step, his eyes surveying me curiously. Alice was on Carlisle’s back, wanting to get a clear shot of my face. Rosalie and Esme kept their distance, and Edward was three paces behind Jasper.
Emmett put the mirror down and waved his hand as if to say ‘go on with it girl’.
I brought my eyes to the mirror.
I was not as beautiful as Rosalie.
But I had to admit, I was beautiful.
My hair fell down slightly wavy, and was blacker than it had ever been. My body was perfectly shape and my skin was pale but soft looking. My eyes were framed by thick lashes…
…my eyes.
They were green.
I couldn’t understand it.
“What does it mean?” I asked slowly, quietly, touching my lids.
“Perhaps you brought that part of being a human with you.” Carlisle explained softly. “Perhaps, as Jasper brought his charisma, you brought your eyes.”
“This will help you blend in nicely with the humans.” Esme said her voice like honey.
“And the thirst?” I asked, looking at Jasper now.
He seemed to realize something about me. His gaze on me relaxed ever so slightly, and he walked forward to me. I caught how each step he took was cautious.
“I don’t think you need to hunt.” He said, catching my face between his hands. “Your thoughts have nodesire to hunt.” He smiled slightly.
I touched his lips. “Well then this will be far easier than I anticipated.”
He smiled lightly. “And to think I was prepared to use my powers.” He caressed my face softly with his thumb, his expression tied up in pure love. “What a fascinating creature you are.”
“So Kira?” Alice asked, sensing the lack of danger, she danced up to me. “What do you think?”
I looked back to the mirror, my face tearing away from Jasper’s hands. However, immediately I snatched his pale hand—which felt warm to my skin now—and held it in place with mine. I looked at my reflection first before looking at Jasper and I as a couple. We were finally equals, and to that I was so glad.
“I’m happy.” I said smiling.
Alice rolled her eyes. “I meant about how you look.”
I shrugged. “Whatever, I’m not really bothered about that. I’m just happy I can see everyone else’s beauty.” I replied, flashing my white toothed smile. Emmett removed the mirror and placed it against the wall.
Alice pouted. “Well, I suppose there isn’t anything I could do about that.”
“It’s absolutely amazing.” Rosalie said proudly, as if I was a first class dog in a show. “She’ll be able to skip the newborn phase altogether thanks to her power.”
“Not necessarily.” Esme warned. “She’s still stronger than us, and her emotions may not be as well tamed as her thirst.”
“I don’t know.” Edward said with his crooked smile. “Maybe she has self preservation as her gift. In this case, she would never lose control.”
“Whatever the case,” Jasper said caressing my hand. “I’m here to help.”
I grinned at him. “That’s what makes this all worthwhile.”
