A hip replacement surgery which can also be referred to as a hip arthroplasty, is a common procedure in which the hip joint is removed and replaced by a prosthetic implant. Several reasons or issues can prompt someone to do this, including but not limited to sever arthritic pain which was caused by the joint, or as a joint gets older it can be subject to damage or deterioration, to fix a hip fracture, an injury common to the elderly.
Most medical professionals consider modern hip replacement to have come into its own in the early 70's, this is why the public perceives it as such a commonplace thing. A hip replacement, such as those from Zimmer Durom, most of the time involves three separate pieces, designed to work similar to a real joint. They include a metal replacement for part of the femur. A component which allows for movement like the joint naturally would, lastly is the bone cement and / or screws that hold it all together.
Often after the initial hip replacement surgery there is a need for a revision, or a further surgery to correct issues with the implant. This can really cause a large amount of stress on elderly bodies and even on younger healthier patients. This is the main focus of what is becoming known as the zimmer hip class action. Surgeons and doctors were choosing the Zimmer Durom for patients that under normal conditions would require a full hip replacement, especially considering that it was designed to be a long lasting solution. Considering that the Zimmer Durom hip implant was supposed to last a long time, the fact that up to 12 percent of patients required surgeries later, caused major emotional and physical reaction.
Though Zimmer Durom has stated that this high failure rate is a caused by surgeon error, they stopped selling their hip replacement device in July 2008. The company moved forward and funded a study, what they found was that 8 percent of the people that received the initial hip replacement required a revision surgery withing a two year period. This has led many in the medical and legal communities to believe that the issue is with the replacement device and not with the surgeons.
