A young girl around nine years of age; stood in front of a shaded shrine. About her there was a unbounded dusky forest, brumed at the edges with heavy fog. Thunder screeched and blanged in the heavens above, releasing pounds over pounds of acid black rain. The girl, wearing Amerindian type clover clothes was soaked through to the bones by the fury of the earth. Her short soft brunet hair flowed across her face, by the rugged wind. A stuffed dog in her arms, was clenched tightly to her small chest, her face was bent to his, her pink lips whispering swift indiscernible words. There was a hardly caught gait hitting the wooden boards, covering the entrance floor of the shrine and the girl bent her head lower—clenching the child’s toy to her as much as she could, as if she could seep all the courage she had stored in him, and bring it out to cover her—make her strong enough to face what she now had to.

Her bare pale feet sank in the mud created by the weather tantrum as she walked one tough foot forward. She was blown back a few inches before she could lift her leg again to continue. Something wet and salty arose from one of her eyes, a drop, of heartbroken anguish. She clenched her teeth and raised a hand, using her other to hold her stuffed animal in the other. A dark deadly human form darted suddenly through the air and raised a sharp edged katana to attack her. The young girl whipped her hand through the air once horizontally in front of her and jumped back, upon landing she fell back, with a surprised yell. She felt something clang with metal and her heart jumped into her throat. Through the darkness she saw the form’s repeated attack this time only a foot from her. The young girl’s instinct blew into her and she raised her hand again, slicing it in an upward motion to create a sharp glade of wind that retracted with the enemies katana. She stumbled back, her eyes steaming, her eyes pounding, and suddenly she couldn’t take it. The young girl turned and jumped up high into the air, she landed on a branch and kept going, hopping to another one a distance away. She ran.

And ran and ran, almost slipping several times on branches she seized to help her escape. Her mind wasn’t right, wasn’t normal, not thinking of what she should be. When the flush of fear inhaling it had calmed down slightly she stopped. Following her instinct she whipped around breathing heavily. She could only see the gloom of the past forest, and the jet patters on the trees, from the strong raindrops. She allowed herself to think the enemy with the long sword had not followed her, branding her as a waste of time. The young girl almost collapsed off the branch, letting herself fall to her knees, balancing on the large twig. She looked down at her hands, they were cut in two different places, the marks about two inches long. Something red, seeped out—now that she had stopped finally, she started to realize, and feel different things. Her hands stung, her feet burned, her head ached, but most of all, she wanted to be in her mother’s arms again. Her enclosed, safe, warm arms; her mind showed her a picture of her mothers form, her long coal hair, her pale beautiful face, her warm, kind smile. The tears, returned in an instant, but this time, she couldn’t keep her feelings bottled up. The young girl bent her head to the branches floor, she rubbed it against the wood, swaying back and forth, a strangled moan rising in her chest, up to her throat. She let it out, in a child’s tortured cry. Suddenly letting out big earful sobs that were hidden perfectly with the surrounding drops of rainfall—she didn’t want to not be heard, she wanted the whole earth to turn to her, to watch her misery, to feel sorry for her. But there was no one there, and her mom and dad, were gone…gone into that shrine, leaving her all alone.

She couldn’t, no she wouldn’t accept it. That they had really left her to be on her own like this, that her loving, sweet mother had labeled her as ‘useless’ and abandoned her at the orphanage, that her father, so goofy, and crafty at the same time, would ever leave his little girl this easily. She couldn’t help thinking, if it was by any chance true, that they had decided to abandon her, what was the reason? Had she done something wrong? Was it her mind? Was she too dumb to carry the Suzaki name? Or was it her attitude? Was she too stubborn? Did they think she was too weak in either body or spirit to be they’re heir? The girl racked her memories, hoping to find anything that would help her conclude, why her life had changed in this way.

A week before….

Saburo Suzaki raised an arm to put across his daughters shoulders. Airi tilted to the side to lean her head on her father’s shoulder, they both watched the sun’s setting gleam as it disappeared into the ground from a distance.

Once a grey enlighting began to fill they’re surrounding’s Saburo turned to his daughter his expression intent. Airi feeling his grave stare, turned her head also to look up at her father. His face made her lips purse together, her gaze lower uncomfortably. “Airi, I have something very important to talk to you about.” Her father stated the obvious, leaning away from her.

Airi’s eyes turned a worried shade of grey, and she stared somewhere beneath her father’s face, her expression immensely guilty.

“You’ve been keeping some things from Naoki and me haven’t you?”Her father said, his words piercing her like shuriken.

Airi bent her head even lower, feeling sick with herself. She knew father would have realized that she was keeping something from him, she was horrible with lying or tricking other people; especially people she cared about.

In the last few days, it was true Airi, decided telling her father and mother about the strange occurrences in her body was unneeded. She had started to feel sick a lot of the time, usually around midnight so it was easily unnoticed by people, but today of all days, the last day of school before the summer vacation, she had thrown up quite a lot in class, the most embarrassing part wasn’t the teacher’s quick copy once she spotted the sight of Airi’s disposal, or the kids laughing her to the moon and back, it was her pathetic attempt to run away. She had jumped easily over the school gate and ran all the way to her favorite place, her secret meadow that her father and she had founded together a year ago. Here, as she expected was her father waiting, he hadn’t said anything till now, but now she understood; he was just waiting for the right time to ask her.

She felt ashamed, a conist. It might seem like an overreaction to most other kids, but Airi, unlike other kids, easily blamed herself over little things, and instead of holding grudges against others, she directed her anger toward herself instead. It was a strange trait, and her parents had said a loud more then once, they weren’t sure where she got it from.

This was the first time that she had ever lied to her parents, but another trait Airi held was one that her parents agreed to. Airi hated more then anything else, to upset someone she loved, to make them worry, to see them cry. To her someone crying could equal the amount of damage as the moon falling. Telling them about her sudden sickness, was crossing a black line, they would worry, and fuss, and make a racket—and she hated that.

“I’m sorry” Airi simply mumbled. “I didn’t want you to worry” She said truthfully.

Saburo suddenly let his head fall back and he sighed. Airi’s face worsened by a vast degree, increasing her guilt, and just pure hate for herself. He lifted himself up from the ground, and placed his hands in his pockets; he turned to Airi and motioned with his head for her to get up.

Airi, unresistingly stood up after him and locked her eyes on the grass glazed ground. She felt her father bend to her level, but she simply stood frozen, feeling the hidden tears begin to steam down her pale face. Saburo reached out his hand to Airi’s chin and lifted it up so he could see her face. He used his other arm to wrap it around her small thin figure and pull her into his chest. He bent his head, resting his chin on her head. He knew, it would be hard from the beginning, for him and Naoki to have a child, but now that there was Airi now, he felt determined, that when the time came, she learned how special she really was, how much she could do, and be stronger in both spirit and physical strength. It was already time, and he was ready—Airi was better then anyone could have imagined.

“Airi…I’m not mad” He felt her body move slightly under his arms, and he tightened his arms slightly around her. “But I have my own secrets to tell, you see, you’ve been getting sick lately, because your guardian soul is developing. But there’s more to it then just that” He stopped his words cut off. A cruel silence began, gnawing his heart, stopping his train of thought, he swallowed and spoke. “Airi….you’re not human”

Time stopped, so did her heart. Airi raised her tearstreaked face to look up at her father, her pupils wide. Nothuman?”
